I am a proud Xavierian and I learned a heck lot from my school. Learning is not just limited to books....

Is it the best school in Nepal? Probably NOT!
Do students who go there are the smartest in Nepal and keep topping SLC? Probably NOT!
Do they have the best teachers and mentors? Probably NOT!
Are the entry exams free of all biases and all students taken in based solely on merits? Probably NOT!
Is it still the most sought school? Probably YES!

Despite all the odds of recent times, St. Xavier's offers education that addresses needs of the modern times that goes well beyond the classrooms. This education that comes at a reasonable price compared to numerous private schools that have cropped up in the capital is therefore appealing to a much larger group of the population. The recent move to change from all boys' school to a co-ed, though uncomfortable to many alumni, is a very progressive step in nurturing students together in a moribund situation of the country. Though there might be few seats a year reserved for special favors , I'd say it is probably the most fair entry examinations for private schools in the valley.

Having said all that, St. Xavier's Jawalakhel is merely a aftershock of what Xavier's really represents. (I don't know if people really understand but St. Xavier's college has nothing to do with St. xavier's school). St. Xavier's Godavari is the singlemost symbol that epitomizes the xaverian spirit, err Godavarian spirit. The sense of discipline, teamwork, responsibility, pride, and positive outlook in life that students garnered over six years in a natural wonderland set precedent for life. I can say, with all hands down, that I am merely a product of six years of Godavari. The enthusiasm that we played sports, contested in thousands of extracurricular and academic activities, the pride we cheered for our school and sang our school songs, the devotion that we showed in working in the nearby communities on tuesdays and above all RESPECT for elders and peers alike throughout made it a self sustainable world.

Now, though it has been transformed to a social center for local people only, the infiltration of quasi-selfproclaimed-indian priests have brought it to a brink of destruction.

Damn it! i got little carried away there. The food sucked bigtime! Albeit, Godavari Reins!

Anybody has a picture of the St. Xavier's Jawalakhel? I heard they have build new buildings and changed a lot of stuff around.

Invitation to the GAA Convention 2007

Context

The past decade has been a very difficult time for all Nepalis and a very heavy price has already been paid to get us to where we are today.


What Nepal will be in the future is too important for all of us to just sit on the side lines and watch anymore. It is not the time to be passive or reactive; but to actually be proactive.

GAA in 2007

The Godavari Alumni Association’s real strength is the members who have had the good fortune of receiving a really good education and are in a position to do a lot for ourselves, our work and business and by doing it really well, for the rest of Nepali society.

Individually and collectively we are in a very good position to help create the Nepal and Nepali society we seek. If we do not take the initiative, then others will do it for us and then we should be prepared to take a back seat. We should then at least stop complaining.

The GAA Convention

On May 12, 2007 (Saturday) GAA wishes to invite you to take part in the GAA Convention where we wish to present, discuss and then resolve to undertake two major decisions that will place us in a key position to do things proactively for the Nepal we seek.

The first is that we want GAA to be a serious voice that will count in the new Nepali society. This voice and our ideas, arguments and positions will be taken seriously because we are organized as a think tank for Nepal. We shall achieve this by creating various professional groups within the Alumni and facilitating them with leadership from within the members.

We shall also have effective means to communicate the products and services of the various GAA think tanks to the wider society.

The second agenda we wish to set for the convention is GAA’s role in creating a Nepali professional society that is merit based. Nepal is paying a very heavy price currently due to mediocrity resulting from appointments and work practices based on political patronage.

Nepalis are trapped in a chicken and egg situation where the best and brightest are marginalized and the mediocre and incapable are put into key positions. The workplace has also become so politicized that productivity, profits and new ideas get side lined for short term political gains.

This has to change. It has to change if Nepal is to get on the path to prosperity. Without wealth creation, there can be no wealth distribution.

You cannot re-distribute nothing. The work place has to recognize achievements and moving up the corporate or government ladders must be merit based. Hiring and exits have to be based on the same.

This way, in the medium term, brain drain will become brain gain for Nepal. We need to create a competitive workplace where the best are at the top.

Now that you brought up the infamous issue of being bokas, I vividly remember attending a get together a few years ago of a so called FAMOUS Co-ED SCHOOL, the graduates from which go to all the cream of the crop institutions here in US. What was so surprising about this party was the shocking behaviour of how guys treated the female counterparts of their very school, something which i had perceived would be the job of BOKAS that go to all guys' school :). Later, one of the gals confided me that the school environment was even worse on how guys treated their own girls and she was equally shocked that it hadn't changed all these years.

Of course i am not trying to compare here, but the case you are trying to create of being a boka by going to an all guy's school is really laughable, something that'd only sprout out of JEALOUSY, even as subtle as it might be. After all, it would be the opinion of a fairer sex to decide on who's a BOKA or NOT!!

Just posting this stupid thread tells how your school is how and how intelligent the students are. I hope not all of them are like ya. Sought after?? I never applied to this school, nor I wanted to go there. I wanted to goto Police or Army school, but didn't have enough hooks.

and i thought xaverians have better understanding to humors :P but since you have delved into my comment and moreover tried your best to defend it, i get this impression:

but on a more serious note, i was, by no means, generalizing or giving my verdict on xavier's. who am i? i just attended one school in my entire school life. whatever i am, and wherever i am now, can majorly be attributed to that school and although i don't know the best business, i do know for a fact that it is as well one of the most sought schools in nepal.

BUT (and this is addressed more towards the originator of this thread)

i wouldn't go by telling people that i attended the best school in nepal, not because it's not, BUT because i am not the right person to judge that. it would be like a competitor/participant bragging about him being the best of all the competitors! having said that, i like the spirit of a child who says his parents are the best in the world :D. i have taken this thread on the same note.

and one more thing,
i am not being jealous here...didn't know it doesn't take a bad schooling for a person to be judgmental. :P

If someone says their parents are the best parents in the world, then you have to be pretty darn stupid to try to prove that your parents are better than theirs.
