I was watching Hannity and Colmes on Fox News recently. Sean Hannity, in that episode, alluded that if some foreigner says bad about the Bush administration, then it is attack to the entire Americans. I wasn’t really comfortable with his remarks. After few days, I got the same kind of perceptions on ‘sajha’ regarding the Prashant Tamang and Indian idol. I got the feeling that we are trying to promote a person (a foreign national) in the name of nationalism. It is tough for me to discern the statement like, “If you don’t like Prashant, then you are not a Nepali.” Agreed, that he is a good singer; but the fact is that he is in a competition, in his country, in his country’s national language. I also agree that he has cultural roots tied with Nepal, so what? Isn’t that a musical game show?? You may support any candidate that you like, but the attached tag of “nationalism” with it is beyond my comprehension.
The irony is that in the middle and upper class of nepali populace, we are not accepting the people of our own very country and own very sentiments( the bigotry starts with saying katta or tapare bahun or jyapu, or bhote or jaad khane jaat or achut or madhisey ). But we are supporting, in a name of nationalism, a person whose uncountable numbers of ancestors lived in a foreign land. I clearly remember “Hrithik kanda” in the name of false nationalism.

So,I just wonder why?? I picked the upper middle and middle class, just with presumption that lower class Nepalese don’t have access to internet.

Are you guys sure that Nepalese are the only one to vote for Prashant?? If people like him, they will vote for him, i am sure Indians also vote for him, if he was that worst, he would have been voted off already. The country that has billion population, do you think Nepalese who has considerably low population affects the voting system?
Did you guys watch American idol? Sanjaya was worst singer, horrible i can say, but he got a vote and he stayed until top 7. So should we blame Indian people because he was able to stay in top 7? I guess he was the most popular among all the American idol contestant because he was the first indian american with different looks, American and indian voted for him, so he was able to stay. After round 7, he was out because he was indeed horrible and people who voted for him couldn't stand his voice.But i don't think Prashant is worst like Sanjaya, i guess he shouldn't even be compared to sanjaya, he has good voice but might not be like amit , but it all depends upon the people who listen. If Prashant is able to draw people to vote for him beyond Nepalese people, then he deserves it.

Regional voting plays a significant role in shows like Indian Idol. It's not just Prashant, Chang was also getting unconditional support from people of his ethnicity.. As much a great singer Amit may be, even people from his regions are gearing up to make him win. Several campaigns have started and singer like Debojit(who hails from the same area) are organizing concerts to create the awareness regarding Amit. 1.5 million votes can't speak for more than one billion Indians. At the end, the one with the strongest regional support will win the show.

Most of those who appreciate "true talent" and who can spend money just for talented singers should watch SRGMP. Though the show also promotes regionalism heavily, atleast they've got some very very very good singers to brag about.. II has none that can hold a candle against anyone remaining in SRGMP. SO, we(the people with no lives) watch Indian Idol because we have found another good reason to watch the show-PRASHANT.. If it was not for Prashant, most of us wouldn't have watched the show to begin with and many of us who would, would have given up on the show long time back.. Nepali or not, he has brought so many of us together and that's a good enough reason for us to love him.

I don't see anything wrong that Prashant is supported by nepalese. If you guys are tennis fans like I'm then you know who Miahel Chang is. Chang is chinese americans. Everytime when Chang plays, he gets the huge support from asian fans espeically chinese no matter where he plays. Asians take him as a role model and pride of asia. When Chang plays against Aggassi or Sampras in USA, asians always go for Chang. As a result, now we see some asian tennis players like Paradorn Srichaphan of thailand. Paradorn says he plays tennis because of Chang. Roger Federer the world no. 1 tennis player is from Switzerland and his mother is from south africa. The south African said he is south african too, so he gets a huge support from south africa. When Sampras plays tennis in Miami againsts any player from countries like Argentina and Brazil latino always cheer for the south american players instead of cheering homeland players like Sampras. Why because it is fans choice and they did it to support their root. In the case of Prashant he has an amazing voice. He is not less talented than Amit and others. I would say, he is slightly more talented than others becasue others got training before they come to compete in II3 but Prashant didn't. Without Training he can rock the stage, if he would have got training, there would be no competation between him and the rest.

Maverick, I do not think people are voting because of Nationalism or anything. You should know that majority of his votes come from Darjeeling people (Like yu say INDIAN), other Nepali people residing or currently in other parts of India and not to forget ACTUAL Indians themselves.
Prashant may or may not be the best singer in the show. But that is not so significant. Many think Amit is the best singer of the show but do you think he will get the nod ahead of so many other male playback singers?? Yes, maybe in some songs here and there directed by Anu Malik himself. But besides that I do not think there is much scope for the best Singer in this year's IDOL.
Now, what really matters is being the INDIAN IDOL itself and not being the best singer.The winner of this game show has a better career(with all those contracts and everything) and moreover will get more exposure after the show is over. And that's what we all want for Prashant, who may be an Indian in nationality but Nepali by heart and everything else. Not being the INDIAN IDOL is not the end of Prashant's life but it may just be detrimental in how often we get to see him after the show.

I think the prasant will be in top two (90% probability) or top three (99% probability). But he mighht be defeted in last war, as whole india might be concentrated in favor of alternative..regionalism and caste has great value in india..as every body knows

In the time of crisis in Nepal of unprecedented proportion when communal violence is looming and people are being divided. Prasant is one who have brought feeling of unity among all the Nepalese.

It is very easy for you to say but lets wait. Who knows Prashant could be voted out next and he would be the one getting the Sony Erickson phone. lol.

On a serious note, no matter how strongly you accept or deny it, Prashant is also getting sympathy votes. His hometown and almost all police force would surely vote for him with a deaf ear but there are people in UAE and UK who can also vote and there are literally thousands of Nepalese residing there. So they are also voting for him. Not that he deserves it but still is getting the votes.

Like I have said earlier, Prashant is a very likeable person but I have reservations about his musical capabilities if he could justify the Idol tag if he ever won. I just wish Amit was in Prashant's shoe so that we didn't have to disagree on this matter.

Did you see last episode. When individaul contestent were asked about who will be out this round.

4 out of 5 said Ankita, and only Ankita said Emon will be out. Nobody took name of prashant. So even contestant thinks prashant is goodenough to stay in the gala.

Prashant is goodenough to stay. Our vote doesnot matter infront of millions of people voting from india. Everybody gets votes from their states, or on the basis of their profession. Amit , emon or ankita is no different.

The thing is Prashant is gettting more vote from people who uses their brain to vote. I still believe prashant is better then emon , ankita and chang. So why should we be surprised to see him in top 4.

Give me one credible reason why Prashant is better than Amit or Emon? Why should I believe that Prashant is really deserving to stay where as Deepali, Pooja and Chang are voted out? On what grounds do you want to justify yourself? For me the answer is simple. Audience does not care who is deserving. They just have a favorite in their mind, Prashant in cases like yourself, and vote irrespective of their performances.

Forget about all the votes he has been getting. That does not count in my eyes. It does not count because in this particular case, people are voting from their hearts but they seldom use their brain.

Let me ask you a question. Lets suppose this Idol thing had a completely different format. People can't vote. Participants performances were judged by a very honest, credible group of judges. Now I want to know...do truly believe that Prashant would be standing in a position that he is in now? I highly doubt it. Prashant is still in the show because he is getting votes from people like you who vote for him relentlessly. I admire your admiration for him but you should learn to accept that not everyone is in the same boat.

Who made the judge? Udit naryan would not have been Udit narayan if people didnt liked his songs. PEOPLE ARE THE BEST JUDGE. NOW PEOPLE ARE LIKING PRASANT THEY WILL MAKE PRASHANT A STAR. May be he will become judge in near future who knows.

And dont tell judges are honest. When Ankita makes mistakes Javed Akhther says " TUMHARE HAR GUNAHA MAAF". When prashant sings well he tries to find out petty falts.


WHEN Anu malik himself said Prashant " you will definitely come to next round and you sang very well". Then why should we be making fuss about voting system.

Stop making small excuses and admire the talent of prashant we are seeing.

and oh, the reasons why I think Amit, Emon, Chang, Deepali and Pooja are better singers than him becasue:
1. They are trained voices
2. Their voice quality is better ( I know you'll totally disagree on this one)
3. They have better knowledge about notes and octaves
4. Relatively, all of them have given better performances than Prashant
5. Perhaps they have been more intelligent in choosing the right song than Prashant

Though not completely a genuine reason, I noticed Prashant's frailties when he sang Yeh Honsla. Javed Akhter gave him a very constructive advice regarding that. On the whole, Prashant is a very vulnerable singer who needs professional training. If he can tame his voice, he will be good. As for now, may god help him and give him what he deserves. He has made it this far. May be the almighty has something in store for him!

Man, you are missing the whole point. That was an assumption that I offered. The judges don't have to be Udit or Anu Malik or Javed Akhter. It could be anyone. I just wanted to know what you felt about that.

I am not making excuses. I am saying outright that there are other people who truly deserved to be in the position where Prashant is in right now. I rest my case!
