TGIF! Hope everyone is doing well. Time's flying by pretty quick. Tihar is almost around the corner. Speaking of which I hope everyone had a nice Dashain celebration. For those students stuck in what seems like the middle of nowhere. Enjoy life within the four walls of the college if that's what you have right now, while you can. College is definitely the best time in life yet we tend to want to complain about it tirelessly. Being human we can't be satisfied with anything can we? Well, at least we can try.

I had been meaning to add this small feature in sajha which would have meant a lot as far as retaining lot of great writers in sajha. I have to blame nothing else but myself for being lazy enough to not think it through and implement it. Because of my lazyness of sorts, sajha has lost or has been missing a lot of brilliant writers. Many new members have not had the opportunity to reading from many great writers who have taken a leave of absense from sajha.

I'm hoping it's not a permanent leave, and I hope users like yourself can help bring them back. Writers like sajha gazer, ashu, john galt, sitara, juggy, sum_off, amber, nk, najar, isolated freak, lot of whom are from long time back and only a few of you oldies may remember them. In fact there are many others and I hope you can help me in filling up those names. In any case, here's what I have put in sajha so that hopefully we can retain good writers in sajha if not bring back other good writers who have decided to melt into oblivion from the world of sajha.

I have added a [subscribe] feature next to each members name in posting, as well as in the userinfo page for any user, whereby registered members can subscribe to the writer. When you subscribe to a writer, your name is shown in the subscribers list under the writers profile. This is the essence of this very simple addition. Another important part of this feature is the email notification. There will be two kinds of notification emails being sent out every night at 11:30 pm. The first notification goes out to all users who have subscribed to anyone - if the subscribed writer has written anything in the past 24 hours. You will get notification of posts by your favorite writers in the last 24 hours if you have subscribed to any writers.

The second notification goes out to the writers informing them who have subscribed to their postings in the last 24 hours. This can serve to be a reminder and acknowledgement to writers who have left sajha for good that their writings are still being cherished here in sajha. For active writers it can serve to be an encouragement.

I hope you will use this feature to help sajha users have more access to more excellent writings, stories and other interesting information.

You can find a member by using the "SEARCH MEMBER" feature above the Vianet banner on the right. When you click on the members name in search result, you will get to the user info page where you can see the [subscribe] link on the same line as the username.

Happy Subscribing to many good things to come.

Warm wishes for a happy and prosperous Tihar.

Please use table below to subscribe to these excellent writers. We would like to see them back in sajha. If I have missed any please let me know via this thread so I can add to the quicklist below.

I do not have any issues with the banners and ads. When you provide a service, you should be able to make money. Its all good. My biggest problem is with moderation. I have seen some threads where if someone has a view that is not a norm, he is called a troll. But, you can foul mouth all you want. Why do you allow racial threads? Why do you allow posting of nude pics? Why do you allow someone to ruin a perfectly good discussions just because he/she doesn't agree?
I do not post very often in sajha. I am not a "Writer". But I do visit the site almost everyday. I feel you need to step up some more and moderate the contents of your site. If not you will keep losing good writers.

I love the fact that whenever something serious is being discussed, we have never heard of people like bat_man make grand entrance to express their personal agenda of hate and intolerance. Obviously you are predisposed to make baseless accusations and make things look bad, specially when you don't even know what you're talking about. Can you elaborate and elucidiate what you mean by hacking your ip address? It's amusing to say the least when people talk about things they don't even understand. Thanks for providing the much needed comic relief during these tough economic times.

Cowboys, I have posted my policy regarding moderation many many times and I am happy to repeat that threads are not moderated as much as you'd like it to be, but as you can see in the disclaimer, I reserve the right to use my discretion in deciding what needs to be done in order to run this site. That disclaimer protects me from your accusation of hypocrisy because, I am using my rightful discretion in deciding what to do here.

Ok here's what I do and don't do:

  • I don't monitor every posting here
  • When people notify admin on few threads, I normally do not act upon it unless there are over 10 notification then I realize I have to look into it.
  • As far as bathroomcoffee issue, this is the 2nd time someone has directly communicated me about thier reservations towards this issue. My procedure in these kind of issues is when I get communicated regarding someones behavior once, I send a reminder to the user. If i get another complaint then I send a tougher warning, and on the third time I either send last warning or ban the user. In this case, as I have said this is actually the 2nd communication with me regarding Bathroomcoffee and in fact you will be pleased to know that I have already sent him a final warning regarding use of foul language about a month ago. If you look into his postings from a few weeks back you will not see any foul languages. My thoughts on a good discussion is that use of foul and derogatory languages discourages discussions and I intend to try to keep it clean.
  • I try to ignore few instances of foul language use or anti social behaviour in sajha, because we as human beings have to release our emotions sometimes and if someone chooses to release it in sajha once in a blue moon. I want to ignore it because he/she is better of releasing it in sajha rather than in the real world out there where his/her release can have worser consequences. But, if this kind of behaviour begins to seem like a habitual thing then I have to step in (sometimes users like yourself help me identify such behaviors) and try to maintain the harmony of the site.
  • As far as accusations regarding favoritism towards friends, I totally understand why some people may want to address that issue. I am very happy to inform you that I have gained a lot of friends through sajha. A lot of times sajha users will have personal contact with me and it is very rewarding to make lot of friends and acquaintances through sajha. Just because I have had contact with a person and consider them as friends, perhaps I might overlook his/her action one or two more times, since I am only human. I don't claim sajha or myself to be a machine with machinistic accuracy in pinpointing violations and making bans. But, please do be assured that any continuation of such actions which jeopardize or tint the repulation of sajha or myself will be dealt with fairly no matter who the person is because my reputation is in line here along with sajha for which I have put in a lot of effort. So please don't think that I will just stand by and let someone make it a habit of tarnishing my own reputation.
  • There have been many cases of discontent among a lot of sajha users regarding users like Bathroomcoffee, Samsara, Nas, to name a few. My policy is not to act upon issues unless I am notified of it through direct communications. As I have stated in about us page, policy issue needs to be discussed or communicated with me directly. If you post your discontent in an obscure thread it's likely to go unnoticed. I also base my judgement on the users popularity in sajha because I don't want 20 people to send me email as to why BC, Samsara or Nas was banned. They may have contributed in many ways but their way of dealing with dissent may be wrong. I don't want to sound or act like a dictator in banning them without giving them few chances. After all we're only human. If I feel that their contribution far outweighs their periodic tantrums then I want to coax them as their well wisher to stop throwing unacceptable tantrums in sajha and to maintain the general harmony of the site.
  • The kind of actions that I have to consider to immediate banning are users who are predisposed to use foul language, who are adamant about their way of thinking, who are utterly castist and racist in their thinkings These kind of people may think that they know everything and they are right in whatever they are saying. These kind of people do not want to accept that there is some chance that they could possibly be wrong, and they want to force their way of thinking upon everyone else including myself when I try to intervene and I don't have patience for this kind. I'm trying to run a sajha site and there's no room for such intolerant people who try to foul mouth their way or bully their way to force their thinking on others.
  • I also have a strict policy on advertising in kurakani. I have seen many sites turn useless because people are there to milk the popularity of sites and in the end it becomes nothing else but ads galore. If people continue to advertise their sites after being warned then they will be banned. I generally ignore couple of advertisings but if people begin using multiple usernames to bring their ads up and stuff like that, then it has to be hasta la vista. If you want to make money off sajha, then you need to share something with sajha too. I have had many instances where people post their banner ads for their events but after the event is over they don't have the need or moral sense to pay for thier banners. Sorry for digressing but I wanted to get that in.

Ok, I think I have covered most of the things I wanted to cover. It started to get too long so I decided to stop now. One last request that I want to make is that I am just another user like you who just happened to be a web developer and developed this site, and I'm not super smart, or able to make perfect decisions on everything. I try my best though. I envision this site for common nepalis, me being one of them, and respect for other individuals is a requirement - well most of the time.

Talking about moderation, it is funny that people are complaining about myriad issues. To complain about someones behavior and again go back to the thread to read what he has wrote is absolutely funny.

I think sajha is perfectly moderated but it can be be better. HOW?

The ORIGINATOR of the thread should do the moderation. If you go and comment on a thread of some attention seeker or nuisance creater then obviously you gonna see those things which you might not like or complaining above. So start posting nice threads and start moderating your own thread or look for responsiblle originator. Btw, It has been a trend in sajha just to leave what ever is posted. But hey, why can't a originator delete the post with the 5 different f-words discussing about a serious issue. Thread creator should have every right to move his thread whatever direction he wants (San doesn't allow libel and porn anyway). So it is simple, you curmudgeon folks (yeah older sajhaites are mostly complaining about the sanctity of sajha), GO FREAKING CREATE YOUR THREAD or discuss on the thread of individuals whom you feel are good member of sajha fraternity (according to your standard).
Most of the threads created over here are left like an unwanted child. Post a topic, get ur name in and i dont care. Most of the above complains are exactly happening in those threads. So you wining folks, just have a suggestion for you, STOP going there.

So it is not about SAN or this or that, it is YOU who have to be more responsible.

ANyway, didn't mean to be offensive to anyone.

Deusi re!

San,
The reason I brought this whole hypocrisy thing up is because it just might be the reason that there are very few good writers. Something to think about.
I am getting out of this thread now.

Well hats off to Dear San, He justified his evrything so clearly that i dont think there are any doubt left.. Well and one more thing to San. I know what your policy is. So if 2 or 3 user didnt like BC that doesnt mean that u have to banned him but the thing about BC is that sometimes he try to create too much dispute in some thread but that might be some personal stuff of BC and i dont wanna know about that but still i regard him a very good writer...OK Cowboys i guess now you are also clear about the policy of sajha...No matter what we say to sajha but we cant avoid this site,,everyday before i opened my Email, my fingers goes on sajha.com So that means no matter what!!! I can't stay without sajha.com bcoz this is the only public chautari where i can relax, spoil my thought, pour my anger and drink some cold water too (i wish there wud be kuwa to drink water too, k cha bchar San bro)...So ladies and Gentleman as our admin San said, he is also just a normal human being like us. He is not a spiderman or Superhero.. He doesnt have 10 hands, 4 legs and sixth sense to control everything in sajha but still he is doing his level best which we have to appreciate.Nobody is perfect in this world..We r all human thats why we make mistake and somebody is there to point out our mistake. May be ya its San's mistake but he already justified everything..So everything is clear now and the Final point is We Love Sajha.com...Lastly thank you for your precious time San....Have a gr88 tihar.....May be next year we will see something like where we can play online deusi and administrator have to give some money, dont worry credit card ni chalcha.. hehe

I see the whole melodrama like a child tying his shoelace. It turns out to be a mess and finally realizes that it should have not been tied that way. Nevertheless, I am glad that he learned the lesson.

Too many chiefs, not enough Indians!!   Does anyone care about good readers?

Moral of the Story

Will you please enlist Raj K. Pandey?
WTF !!!!!!!

We inherit both pride and shame of our deeds.

San,

This was a very noble effort by you indeed. I was really happy to see you implement this in Sajha.

As far as the censorship rule goes in a community like this, my advice would be, let the user control what content he/she sees and what he/she doesnt because I believe we cannot dictate what others should/should not do, rather we can only limit our own actions.

This could be in the form of a rating system where readers rate (from a pull down menu) the originating article as P, PG, R, X (XX? hehe) and in everyone's individual profiles an option to block such and such rated content.

A more destructive approach would be to 'Bring IGGY back'. Give us the power to ignore. Thence the power to avoid confrontations. Don't like a user? Put him in your 'IGGY BIN'. His posts will show up as [user ignored].

I have noticed a lot of time (and conversations) here is wasted on useless flaming/trolling. Nepali pride is something to marvel.

Lastly, I'm looking forward to more of your well thought out improvisations to this already wonderful community portal.

Hi San and friends,

I got an email from Sajha, saying "This is a notification email with updates on subscribers in the last 24 hours to your postings in sajha."

I wondered what that email was about, and, well, here we are.

This is an enormously flattering invitation.

Thank you.

Time-permitting, I will post/share stuff here, and I encourage/urge others to do the same too.

oohi

myaan I did not know there was such a hangaama brewing here.

1st of all I have been banned from sajha for using profanity BEFORE.

2nd of all I have received several emails from San to clean up my act.

3rd of all I don't know if ppl have noticed, but i have been laying low and cut down on my profanity in the past couple of months.

And as San mentioned my posts on other ppl's thread has been deleted several times. SO YOU CONTROLL YOUR OWN THREAD.

Just to clarify things to people.

Just wanted to add a quick piece of info regarding impermanence. Nothing is permanent in this world and neither is a ban in sajha! If someone is banned and they take the time and make the effort to communicate with me regarding the reversal of a ban, I am happy to do so depending on a case by case basis. There are always people who are happy to send me threatening and foul emails for placing a ban. I fail to understand this psychology - I mean someone making a huge issue out of a ban on their anonymous username. I can't imagine the kind of ego issues they have in real life.

Bat_man, I have answered a majority of all questions posed to me, and as far as I remember, I also posed one very simple question to you. What do you mean by hacking ips or hacking others? I mean I have no clue what you are talking about so please do elaborate on this subject. As far as sajha bandh, if that's what would make you happy go ahead with it. If you need help creating banners, I can help you with that.
