Bostongirl,

Now you are speaking a different tune. You call for an elimination of the demand, that is called denoucing the child labor. You also agreed that most of the Nepalis cant afford adult workers. Doesnt that mean that their replacement are paid less? So, the child labors are paid less. Doesnt that constitute some derivation of slavery? Also theres a difference in abusing a child and abusing an adult. The actions may be the same but the outcome are definitely different. I hope I dont need to explain this to you. It is for a reason that the world is against having kids replace the adults in the workforce. They are built differently and thus can't cope with the pressure of working in real life that begets stern consequences of ones shortcomings.

Again, if the situation of child labors in Nepal was so innocent as some of you have portrayed, why dont the masters make their own kids do all the chores? If infact the "experience" is really helping kids why dont the masters want their own kids experienced? Lets not be that naive about what these child workers get for their services. Its absolutely nothing. They get deprived of the childhood. The one and only thing these kids have. I say, even though it sounds a little cruel, let them starve, let them rot. We are better off watching these kids dry out than give a life that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. If hunger kills in a day, a robbed childhood will kill that kid each and everyday.

You guys should be ashamed and shut up, if you have any shame left inside you.
You know, you're n ot going to change anything in this context.
You know, your voice is not going to make any changes in the Nepali society.
You are worthless, yapping in sajha, practicing your yapping ability in English, thinking you're super human and you can make some changes by talking big. Here is the harsh reality for you.
You are not going to make any difference just by barking here. Go to villages of Nepal, start some business or give some skills to the poor , then they might have some money to buy food for their children. Then they might not have have to send them in the city to work. You bunch of morons will go watch porn and jerk off or, play playstation after writing in this thread. That is not going to help losers. if you cna't make any changes, just shup up. Don't act like you're doing anything, because , you're not... and that is the reality..

Dyamm,

Let me borrow some words from an old friend:

"Living my life in a way that I choose
You say I should apologize,
Is that envy in your eyes
Reflecting jealousy"

Thought I'd share a bumper sticker message with the FOOLS that are arguing that child labor/slavery is okay 'coz of economical reason and blablabla:

"It is POVERTY to decide a child must work/slave so that you can live as you wish" - Anonymous

I'm going to stick it in every other vehicle in Nepal. I'm NOT kidding. Especially on Bostongirl's, I haven't forgotten.

God Bug, you continue to be annoying and naive. Instead of wasting money on printing/buying these bumper stickers....why dont you put that money towards eradicating child labor?? See, people like you have means and resources, understand that there is a problem but do nothing about. Which is much much worse that someone who understands what the problem is and what is causing it.
You have missed the whole discussion about how child labor is caused because of poverty, YES, poverty (which I am fairly certain by now that it is a term you have difficulty understanding) and if you want to stop child labor, you dont take them out of their work on day one...you take a sustainable approach on eradicating it, which means you have to equip the parents with some kind of resource. I know its impossible for you to 'think' critically, but please try to understand that no one is saying child labor is good... we are merely saying why it exists and what should be done about it. One way I know will definitely ruin the plan to have child labor free labor is kicking these kids out of their 'jobs' to let them go do something similar or worse. If they could have had a
iet childhood with their parents, just think why they ended up where they are now.

And you say we should just ban the child labor without any alternative policy or sustainable income resource. India just tried doing that last week. READ THIS:

******************************
Child labor seems so categorically wrong that it's difficult and almost inappropriate to criticize a law banning it.

But a ban against child labor that was announced in India earlier this week merits criticism.

On Tuesday, the Indian government passed legislation banning the employment of children younger than 14 from working in restaurants, tea shops, hotels and spas or as maids in domestic service.

Children within this age range make up about 3.6 percent of the labor force in India, according to the Indian Embassy's Web site. About 13 million children work in India, and some estimates put the number much higher. About 256,000 of those work in cafes and hotels or as domestic servants.

The ban on labor for these 256,000 children, which is aimed at taking them out of the labor force and putting them in school, leaves one very big question – will they be able to survive without work?

The Associated Press spoke to children in New Delhi earlier this week, and it seems the answer to that question is no.

"As it is, I barely make enough to survive," 12-year-old Dinesh Kumar told The Associated Press. "This will be a bad blow. I don't really know what I'll do."

Kumar, who has been working at odd jobs since he moved to New Delhi three years ago, is one of the hundreds of thousands of children in India whose lives depend on their ability to work.

Rama Chandran, a 13-year-old, said he sends his family the money he earns from working at an eatery in New Delhi.

"If I didn't send money home, they would starve," he told The Associated Press.

Though it is heartbreaking that the situation in India dictates that children must work to survive and that they are responsible for supporting parents, grandparents and siblings, taking away the option of working will only make life for these children more difficult.

If enforced, the ban will push children into other sectors or into underground labor, where they will continue to work anyway. If the ban is sufficiently enforced, these children will simply go on working but will be doing so illegally.

Though Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said firm action would be taken against anyone violating the new law, India's history of child labor bans suggests child labor is not likely to cease as a result of the new legislation.

India already has a ban against children working in hazardous industries, including factories that produce incense sticks, firecrackers and carpets, but the law has been ignored and tens of thousands of children continue to work in those jobs.

Only now they are working illegally. Based on the situation for those working illegally in the U.S., who usually work for less than minimum wage, children in India are likely to see a decline in wages.

This editorial could not conclude without again emphasizing that child labor is terrible and that it is sad to think about children having to work each day rather than attend school. But a ban on child labor is not the way to approach the problem. It is a superficial way to address a very deep and complicated problem, and it likely won't fix anything.

The problem of child labor in India is rooted in myriad complex causes, primarily desperate poverty, and the problem can only really be addressed by dealing with the economic problems that have allowed child labor to flourish.

Before the Indian government tells these children they can't work, they must first set in place some sort of safety net for them, so when they find themselves out of the workforce, they will not also find themselves out on the streets.

I know you gonna say that i am a chatterbox and how i am pro 'slavery' but you are being ignorant and missing the whole point of my argument because you think its cool on your part to point fingers at others without offering any ideas of your own. Pretty dumb.

How is creating awareness being ignorant? It does NOT go together, does it?

P.S.- Again, for the gazillion time, NOT here to give ideas or solutions, simply awareness.

Your thought process is sad and irrational and I don't read long articles esp. the ones you post. You scare me more than Freddy on Friday the 13th!

If you dont have the patience to read other people's posts and articles regarding the issue, then how can you create awareness? Being aware requires understanding of the material and knowledge. If you lack both the understanding and knowlege, your Mission Awareness/Bashing fellow Posters holds no value.
You are scared because you have nothing to argue with.

It is very sad to read such "Prathas" which are deeply rooted on our country, especially from a leading media as CNN. I understand the situation of "Kamlaris" or whatever it is called (slavery...), but sometimes Media spices the scenario worse. I don't think so this pratha exist only on girls, but boys too. And also, I doubt the authenticity of the research they did it so long as the payments are concerned. $50 a year???

I have seen both boys and girls as house-maids in the city of Kathmandu. Unfortunately, we happend to have few maids while we were growing up. My parents really hate the idea of "Nokar" (which is the common name people used to refer), so we never treat them as a third-class personel, but rather eat together, play together, and most importantly, sending all those kids to school.

I like the idea of Mansion and SajhaUser- "The Change." The change is the toughest thing to do in a life. If we just initiate just a little step as treating those Kamlaris similar as ourselves, as least close to what we have, that would be the best solution of this "Pratha." It is upto us how you gonna treat them- treat them as a "Nokar" giving them your torn and worn-out clothes or being a little sympathetic to teach them learn and write.

I know our country is not great on economy, but seeing these kinds of article from a notable media makes me sick as they don't have the faintest idea what it is to sleep without having a single grain in the stomach.....

Did I say I NEVER read? I said I don't like reading long posts in sajha, especially posted by YOU. You still don't listen do you?

There are many sources of information besides sajha post FYI. And, unlike you, I don't necessarily make the text readings and/or schooling my basis for "understanding" and "knowledge" (if you ask me, they are the same thing, ekdum redundancy in your writing, thats why I try to omit your B.S).

OK, shifting gears, I think we need to focus back on the child labor/slavery issue rather. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, got it?

If you go back and read my short liners, I've been VERY consistent with what I've been saying ALL along and for your convenience I've cut and pasted:

"It is a freaking slavery and is ABfunkingSOLUTELY unacceptable given the current economical stats- Get that in your semi-retarded heads!" - bugtraq, Posted on 09-26-06 9:49 AM

So your comment as of today, after 16 days: "Finally you are getting some sense. I think all of US got it right away that it is not acceptable. You are a little slow, but getting there!" is very unsupportive given the facts and shows that you do NOT listen.

Would you also want me to cut and paste what you had said to show that I'm not the one who's slow bhanera? And for child's sake, don't use "US", I think they can speak for themselves, its weak.

P.S.- As long you don't cut and paste some long nonesense articles, I'll read what you have to say. Its quite entertaining at times. But just be careful, the more you speak nonesense, the more you are going to make fool out of yourself!

SupariThula, sadly that seems to be the only thing in your limited vocabulary. But I told you, the day you are beheaded, I promise I will STFU. Now go and tell your family to do their own chores, otherwise, all of them will be beheaded as well.

Saint and beheading? Call me a modern Saint. Do NOT assume that I'm from KTM and the sick life I live by slaving kids or anyone for that matter to make my life comfortable. And IT IS NOT OK IF YOU, YOUR FAMILY, OR YOUR NEIGHBORS ARE DOING IT. Least you can do is, pass the SAINT's message to them. Beheading someone with the thought like yours is okay in my dictionary.
