O.K, It's Valentines' day. So?
No I do not have anything against the spirit of the DAY, one day (week would be better), where we set aside the time for our (that) ONE person, and neither do I oppose anything that's remotely fun. At this mechanical age, of course we need to tune ourselves to remind us that there is more to life. And life's joy is better when shared especially with .. well THE ONE.
No I do not have any dark memories, any poignant tales, or a scar that opens up every valentines'. In fact, few of them have been exceptionally memorable, an odyssey if you will. But, as I try to look back to the years, I remember Valentine's was hardly a "circus" that it is now. It was truly a 'thing' between two people. It's another thing that if I go further back, we had not even heard of anything called Valentines' day :).
We hear so much about Valentines' day. 'Any plans?' "What are you getting for HER/Him?" And the next day, "so how was it?" We went to this place and it was blah blah blah...give me a break. I overheard one of my very beautiful female colleague ;), asking another (guy), "aren't you off today? He went, "Why? Why should I be?..What?" :). Then there were (quite) gushing between two colleagues. Apparently one had got something related to the family of diamond or its siblings. And yes, they were FEMALE(s). And no, they were not loud. (As if). Those awwwwwwwwww's and o0o0o0oo's. Darn. I gave them the most radiant smile I had :).
As I rushed to work this morning, worried, frustrated for being late (I left her a message) for the 'touch base' meeting with my boss, guess what did I learn after coming to work. SHE is not feeling well :), & most probably she would be off today. Hehehe. A valentine fever perhaps. And there I was, worried that I am late for our so (un)important meeting.
Valentines' day is nothing more than a commercialization & is one of the foster children of the capitalist world. It is overstated, over blown and nothing more than mere hype by the commercial industry, to extract every last penny they can, from our hard earned money. And we are like that fish in the abyss, where we can only escape for so long & we all shall be 'caught', eventually. After all, the spaces are scarce, if at all.
Would someone please tell me if this day actually help sustain the life of a relationship, or does it in any way makes (already) beautiful relationship more bewitching, or for that matter, mend the relationships already on the rocks? No, really?
Isn't today's relationships more like, "I love you, but I'm not in love with you" kind? The hype for this DAY is anything but, grotesque at best.
Like one Spanish philosopher said, "We fall in love when our imagination projects nonexistent perfection upon another person. One day, the fantasy evaporates and with it, love dies." Or does it? I leave that for you to decide. But it makes one think for a while. Doesn't it?
Frankly, I do not see any reason for this day to be hyped about. It's nothing more than propaganda. Sooner we realize that, better it is. Needless to say that if there are any winners, or for that matter anyone who actually benefits from this great day, are those who has commercial interest in it. But then again, who doesn't? After all there are 'sales' almost everywhere. ;). There in lies an irony:).
And with it Valentines' day is here to stay.
Happy Valentines' Day. :)
IndisGuise:)
P.S: It doesn't reflect the view of the writer :), and neither does it imply that writer resents the 'subject'. It was mere avalanche of random thoughts in oblivion.
