Hey andolan,looks like u don't have a clear picture of what US is like! True that there are some white women in US who thinks abortion is wrong...why? Because of their religious beliefs. But majority aren't. Don't compare Nepal's size with USA size....it's way bigger and therefore a huge percentage difference. Who says most nepalese women agree with abortion?? Half of them don't even know about it.......to remind u they won't even have a knowledge of family planning. And most of the times, it's not women who stop abortion but the male dominated government( like BUSH) even though women want it but that doesn't mean every president agrees with that! About the work issue, yeah Nepal is getting better but USA is far ahead so please don't compare........Ofcourse there would be some women in USA who has to stay home for kids at some point in her life that doesn't mean she'll stop working as we know men don't want to stay home to take care of kids. But it's a different case scenario than Nepal right? Women aren't educated enough to work in Nepal therefore are forced to stay home. There's no choice in Nepal like women here have whether they want to raise the kids or work or do both. Okay I hear u about the gay issue, yes there's a conflicting acceptance for gays here but gays are out of their closet and free than any other country! Have u heard about gay people in Nepal??? I don't think our society is ready to even brother mentioning about it! I am amazed...at your comment......on moving together before marriage! Well, I know a lot better about that one! Do u want to know a person a lot better before marriage or after marriage when it's too late....infact u don't know a person completely unless u live together with him/her. In Nepal, we don't have a choice to choose a partner but where there is a permission to choose they do really think it carefully before committing instead of wasting your life with a stranger. If u don't know about it then don't assume it's wrong.I strongly believe in dating a few people at least to know if he/she is your match.......not marrying a person that your parents thinks is good for u! Wearing a mini doesn't make anybody ignorant or fool but only makes her fashion forward. Now u might say only dumb people wear those fashionable clothes......well u are wrong....Me and my friends are nowhere near dumb, ignorant infact most of my friends are really successful.... doctors, engineers, some even have their own business and very progressive too. The kind of forwardness I am talking about is about brain......like no dependence on anybody, making your own decisions, choosing your own partner, being open about new things etc. Let's hope u don't find this pathetic!

Hey Sitara, I don't have a problem if u have a different view or are different than most of the fashionable girls......infact it's a choice right? Whether I want to be fashionable while I am young or not! On your sari comment, are u sure everybody likes to wear sari? Yeah they might get used to it....but I bet it's not necessarily the most comfortable when it's extremely hot outside.....or may be u might need to run sometimes to catch a bus......I don't believe it's the most comfortable. It might work in Nepal but not in US. Yeah I agree someone can look graceful but not comfortable at times. Somebody commented on me.......stop copying white girls in USA......what am I supposed to wear in USA? Go to work in a sari, kurtha.......!! exhibit Nepaliness that way? or should I be coy, conservative and reallly nice...that's doesn't work here.....people will walk all over u! Instead I have to be forward, get my opinions out there, active etc. Well, wearing pants shows a figure more but it's not vulgar. If u have a nice body actually it emphasizes it instead of hiding. There are all types of pants for different shapes and sizes..... if u know where to look....one thing is for sure it's wayyyy more comfortable. Minis might not look elegant but it's hip when we are young. I will try to be elegant when I reach 35 and I have tons of fats to hide. But for now I want to enjoy my youth. Why everybody thinks that copying white girls.is ...only external things....how about internal things......how about their independence, making their own decisions on life, career, partners....we have to learn a lot from them (how many times do I have to repeat this phrase?). That doesn't make me less nepali. I am in no way trying to be a white girl infact I can never be one. But what I try to get is to learn their good qualities and still keep my good qualities from my roots. I used to wear minis even in Nepal so what's wrong with that! Should I wait for u to stamp me as a good girl unless I walk around in US in sari? Wait why only nepali women? How come nepali men can wear western clothes and has no comments on them.....shouldn't they be wearing topi and daura suruwal if women were to wear sari? Women should have the independence to choose to what she likes to wear and not be judged upon. like nepali society does! It's impossible for women to break these societal boundaries........if u still think they don't need to change into something comfortable! My main concern is about why people think fashion forward people are fools, their brain is still the same isn't it?

I don't think that you have to be white to have independence, make your own decisions on life, career, partners.....if you haven't noticed more nepali women whether in nepal or the us are becoming more independent and learning how to make their own decisions...they have the freedom to choose their partners...it doesn't mean that they're trying to copy the "white" people...i think that they're just moving ahead and have realized that they don't need to be under the suppression of men or the society.... And just because you're white doesn not mean that you have the capability to make your own decisions...i mean i think your using the term"white" a lil bit too loosely. what about all those white people that aren't educated?...(yes they do exist), who live in poverty....all you're seeing is the shiny exterior but if u scratch the surface you'll find that there's more to white ppl...than they're forwardness....i mean look at the amish...aren't they white?...but why haven't they adapted to the ways of the rest of the country or evn the world...they still wear clothes that are dated...they're living like people in the 18th century....my point is white isn't always right...look at all the successful african americans....asian....hispanics ...what about them...why do the white ppl have to set an example for you..why can't we look up to other races?...and i think it's quite superficial ..that u judge a person bye what they're wearing...jus coz a nepali wears jeans and skirts and such doesn't give that person a one up over some one who wear kurtas and saris...like sitara said u can look damn sexy in a sari jus as u would in a micro mini...but then again there's classy versus trashy...but that's totally different....anyways... i'm not saying people who are "fashion forwad are fools"...but the justification u (sweetie) gave for yourself being "fashion forward"...i don't know if i made my point or if i even had a point...i'm jus typing away and i'm not taking sides...jus voicing my 2 cents...if you can make sense out of it..

About staying together before getting married, there are lot of people who doesn?t like to stay together before get married in this country. I once took sociology class in college and we had to write paper about pro and con. Class split between almost half and half. About full time mom, there are lot of white mom just want to have baby to get child support. Watch how many soap opera there are in TV during day. Who do you think their audiences are ? All are full time mom and there are sill 10 ? 15% white males don?t want their wife to work. They just want to use them to raise baby and it happens in middle lower class. What kind of mentality is that? Have you ever watched Jerry springer show. This show represents huge number where only 23 % ( not sure, I think so) of whole populations are college graduate.

Who says nepalis don?t have right to choose their partner. I think both guy and girl have some rights to choose their partner?s education, moral , social values. At least they try to match financial, social, moral and educational values. I think its getting lot better than before . It?s not about comparison. I think Nepal is going forward and American has stocked for last 10 years on same issues like gay, abortion., immigration. My wearing a saree on occasions does not mean, I wear one to a club (And, even if I did, who's to stop me?!) That is where my "little black dress" comes in handy.
