I finished my masters in mechanical engineering and joined phd in the same school without taking opt. I thought I would enjoy it but god, I was wrong. Now I want to get out and work. I have zero experience so getting hired in ME field seems difficult. The only way out I see is IT but for that I don't have an OPT. I am getting stipend and my tuition is paid, so in a sense its very comfortable. To get an OPT I will have to get a second masters, which is not free and could take another 2 years. What do you guys suggest I do? I would really appreciate any helpful suggestions I could get at this moment. I am really tired of this limbo I am in.

In many schools, what dept does that if a student could not finish the phd, she/he is given new criterion to finish the master's program, which a student can finish mostly in 2-2.5 years from the time of start. But this looks complicated since you have already completed master's degree. Is your master's degree from the same dept as you are enrolled now for phd. You should get some help from international office but most help might come from your own dept.

Talk to your international office, they are the good source to get the info. I feel like if you have finished the master degree recently than you can still apply for OPT even though you have started PhD.... Share us what your int offices suggests to you.
