Booking a flight to Delhi from JFK and then a separate ticket from Delhi to ktm? It cost 250 $ less than direct booking form JFK to Ktm? I understand I will have to collect my luggage in Delshi and again check in for my next flight. But a 4 hours layover in Delhi would take care of that. Do you go for or against this?

I think 4 hours will be tight considering you have to go through immigration but that is a nice Idea. I am always curious about these hidden cities flights. But my question is how do you manage to return back? Are you going to Delhi from Ktm and then to JFK?. Also if you are US citizen don't you think you needa India Visa to chose your destination as India?

You might save $250 but what if it backfires? If you have more than 1 luggage, the DEL to KTM flights (I believe all of them) charge for extra baggage, which might be somewhere from $100 to $150 depending upon the weight you're carrying. Add the hassle of being in an Indian airport, and losing your belongings, plus any flight delay, and those 4 mere layover hours to get everything back on schedule and you might end up regretting. I'm not saying this WILL happen in your case, just sending you a caution so you might reconsider. Jai Nepal!!

4 hrs is more than enough since all international arrivals and departures are in Terminal 3 and no need to account for shuttle bus times between terminals. The only time consuming parts are immigration n check-in security which would be at the max 1-1.5 hr.

Bandainasambidhan bro, I think that rule is only applicable for flying out the first time from India. If you have arrival stamp on your passport on arrival in India, I don't think it makes sense to stop your departure from India.

Thank you frens for valuable input. I came up with a conclusion. Yes, it's possible to do and would be quite cheaper if you can handle all the physical hassles after such a long flight. Word of caution: only 20 kg luggage is allowed on flights from Delhi to Ktm and vice versa, so that might be an issue. So if you have sinlge luggage bag of less than 20 kg it's a good idea. @sajhamitra- nepali hariyo passport dhariharuko lagi bhaneko

Coming back in the same way is absolutely possible. Again the issue is with the amount of baggage. After 20 kg the extra cost is 5$/kg. If you think it's still cheaper, then it is an option

@nepaliketo....If I were you I will not worry about $250 and will choose flight from US to Nepal without doing separate ticket from Delhi to KTM. Just my personal opinion.

I had done similar in the past but I had only one ticket. I had to meet few people in Delhi, so came out, went to their place, had meal, came back to airport and checked in again. I had layover of 8 hours though. Indian IO stamped my passport on exit, but Nepali IO didn't. But make sure that your flight to KTM has enough luggage limit. In the mean time can you share your price how much you are paying direct vs Delhi exit? And please try these site as well : http://www.skyscanner.com/ and http://matrix.itasoftware.com/ Try changing the currency on second link, It might give you difference upto 100 bucks.

Don't know what others did or what happened to others, Just explaining my personal experience. Worst idea to travel via India. People in airport (they say immigration officials) take your passport and disappear for long time. They dont treat you good when they know u are "Gorkhe". I would rather pay $500 more to go via other route than India. Again, this is based on my personal experience, may not be applicable to many.

@Collegefootballrocks - Like you, I would pay extra to avoid India Airport (Any). One time our stuffs (only few) were gone without a clue whether the luggage itself was tampered. Thanks but that's just from an experience and only a personal opinion.

I purchased two separate tickets from DFW-DEL then DEL-KTM (round trip) . I purchased my tickets through travel agent. I was advised that as far as I am booked on same reservation, airlines will checked the baggage until final destination. For returning also same rules will be applied. I did the same. I had no issues with luggage. It was through check-in while going and coming back, hassle free. As far as it will be on same reservation, you don't need to check your baggage again. But you have to remind them at check-in counter.
This is my current experience Jan10, 15- Feb15,15
Good Luck !!

I have done this. I bought separate ticket from NC to JFK and JFK to Delhi. I will never recommend anybody to do this. I also got $300 cheaper but ended up paying more. In my case my flight from NC to JFK was delayed. Because of this, i missed my international fight from JFK to Delhi. Since it was not in one package, i had to pay $500 more for next day flight from JFK to Delhi. Also i always had to worry about luggage. They have different weight criteria on domestic and international flights. On returning back, i had to hurry up so that i do not miss the flight again. Based on my experience, the hassles you will get is not worth it.
