All friends, I have been to USA for about 20 years. I have obtained Masters Degree in computer science. I have worked in various companies including in Government sector as a contractor for more than 15 years in software development field. Now, I started getting frustrated of being here. I want to go back to Nepal for good. I wanted to join a college as a computer science teacher in Kathmandu. Please give me some advice if you have information on this. Thanks.

NepaliBhai, Where do you live btw? If you live one of those boring midwest where there is nothing to do then you are living in wrong place. Go to somewhere where you can find adventure like pacific north west or colorado.

Go to Nepal, Give it a try if it doesn’t work out, come back here. Life is too short to regret. My only concern is pollution in Kathmandu.it has gotten 200 times worse in last 20 years.

you must be around 40. you will face ageism in IT now. I say use your money and start a small business or something. Definitely live in place like Texas or NY where there are lots of Nepalis. Nepal is our home but it has changed a lot. Too much traffic jams, too much dust, but ppl are more civilized than 10 years ago. There are lots of ppl who want to do better for the country in Nepal now a days. I say give it a try.

Nepalibhai Dai, I am having same thoughts. Heading to Nepal not for good but at least a trial phase. Here no matter you ride a range rover or buy a 500K lavish house with 30 years payment plan, its all Credit and payments, it belongs to Creditor or bank end of the day. May be same way in Nepal but debt options are limited, they ask or need collateral in Nepal as far I know. I was talking with another dai who have been here since 1992 works on decent IT job, he said same thing, the system runs in credit, no matter how much money you make, you are still trying to catch up. There is limited surplus or savings here unless you really are making more than average Joe (400-500K a year). In a way, life becomes monotonous, same smile (Hi, Hows weekend, Kids Ok etc) to khaireys and Coworkers. You might have to do same in Nepal as well but end of day, you will be around your family members and society. Especially, birthdays, festivals, marriage and other rituals will be totally different compared to here unless you have few family members here. So, yes there is pros n cons no matter where you live, point is where will you be happy. Once the feeling of not being happy comes, it will be hard to get over as that feelings would not come in first place if you were already happy. So, I will tell you my plan. I plan to go there for 3-4 months. Dashain-Tihar fun yes, but after that I want to explore Job/Business opportunities. How family and society acts after you are no longer guest, what are actual challenges to make living and settle down. With my education and experience, can I afford the living standard I plan over there ( Need at least a Car, hot water and weekends off Lol). I will basically, try to be member of society there and get a sense. If It works out well, I will plan to stay there. If it goes south, I will pack my suitcase and come back, 1-2 months of struggle, job searching etc then again back in track. Of course my home and family will always be in Nepal, but for my lifestyle choices, facilities, provision and freedom that States provide, I will stay here. I am not going to start from scratch again anywhere, life is too short for that. I will visit whenever I get chances like once a year or so and stay happy lol. Also if you bring this topic in any nepali gatherings or parties, OMG ha ha circus, desh bhakta dekhi bidwan, dukha gareka dekhi dv pareka , kasile newyork po ta ho thau dekhi koi testo ma k basnu, Amale dekhi congress, sahar ko dhulo dekhi gau ma gayera banauni kulo, Mabhir pun dekhi liyeara Shesh Ghale, NRN dekhi liyera dual citizenship, kurai nagarau, yaha hanahan huncha kaslai k ramro ra naramro vanera pagaal banauchan.

After working for almost 20 years, I believe you should be financially independent by now.
You should have enough wealth to live on without working. That doesn't mean you have to retire early. You can take on a passion project that may not pay very well. But isn't that the sole purpose of being financially free?
Based on your interest, I would suggest you schedule a 6-12 months stay in Nepal. Anything shorter than 6 months is a small sample size. Try to avoid Dashain/Tihar if you want to get an actual feeling of a mundane life in Nepal.
- Rent an apartment
- Find a lecturer job
- Keep track of your budget
- Start a daily journal
At the end of your experiment, go through your journal and see how your thoughts have evolved over time. Most likely you will find your answer there.
Only you know what's best for you.

Ok, here we go, for Nepali Bhai. You need to make community where you live. You need to knock the doors and find the way to socialize.Same happens in Nepal too. You will get only what you had invested for. Just saying "oh I don't have community here, work and home," does not bring anything unless you put effort to make it. It will be useless trying to fill water if the bucket is leaking from inside. So, try to find out what is the real problem behind looking for community and try to solve in that way is the best. Good luck!

You cant deny America has lot to offerm but, I recently was back for 3 months, I see a chill country, booming internal tourism industry, very ambitious and creative youth. IT industry is very much in the rise. Especially now the government is tryin to go digital and connected. There's enough money with everyone(cuz everyone is outside and pumpin the economy), inflation is high but the monetay value is still stable(thanks to INR). I have plans to go back soon. The best suggestion is theone last guy gave, take a shorter trial visit, instead of all in once, but i dont think you will have any frustrations. Even if you do, there's enough activity, also 24 hr electricity and wifi everywhere. Of course due to road expansion, the ring road road is dusty..., dont even think of going to Boudhanath through chabail, theres a cloud of dust like some nuclear explosion wasteland, LOL but it sould clear soon

By reading all the comments, clearly the majority here want to stay in the US. But not everyone has to do the same. Returning to Nepal is a good decision if that is what you want to do. I visit Nepal every year and in contrary to what the majority feels, I have always enjoyed visiting Nepal, every time a little more than the previous visit. Even if it has not been better than 20 year ago (which I disagree), it has not been worse either. How well will be your experience depends upon what your priorities are. It also depends on your financial situation. If living with/close to your parents, having social interactions with friends and family on a regular basis, and celebrating holidays is your priority, I think you will enjoy it. It helps if you are financially independent, which means that you do not necessarily have to earn income to survive. That leaves you with a lot of options regarding what you want to do for rest of your life. If you need to depend on a regular job for income, you may need to try more than one job before you can settle. Moreover, you may have to lower your expectations and adjust to the Nepali work culture. But trust me, going to Nepal is not a bad decision. I have never changed my mind regarding my decision that I will go back one day. It has been more than a decade already, but now I even have a return date on my calendar. I do love the US and I wish I could stay at both places at the same time, but that is not possible and I will go back in a few years. Happiness is a myth and pursuing happiness by changing your circumstances will only disappoint you. But, if you have a positive attitude, you can live anywhere. Good luck! Don't forget to share your experience.

I would just go back. Nepal is much more fun, you’ll enjoy your life there. Life is US is same , Boring..paycheck to paycheck living for most of the people. Nepal is your country, you’re born there. I laugh at some of these folks who say you won’t be happy in nepal, it’s pollution is bad etc... you’ll came from same place, you came here for a temporary proof of time but US government provided you an opportunity to stay here permanently , otherwise you had to go back to your country. Mostly people from poor countries Nepal , India , Bangladesh wants to live in US l eminently. Go back develop your country. You don’t see too many people from Europe that wants to settle in US . You won’t get an opportunity to live with your parents when it’s too late. And it never comes back, once it’s gone , it’s gone... only regret after that.

You are misunderstanding me. Pollution is a measure of particulate matters in air. It has definitely gotten worse to the point that almost everyone is coughing in Kathmandu. I have contemplated going back multiple times and visit frequently but pollution seems to be dealbreaker for me. I grew up in Kathmandu so haven’t contemplated about living outside valley.

Everyone turns to “fake American” with fake America accent here.. instead of encouraging someone to go back to their own country, these folks are discouraging him, how the fk will your country develop if educated guys like you stay here and never go back ?? Its just unreal how mentality of these folks have changed, now they want to stay here for their “kids” and abandon the family, relatives and everything they’ve in nepal.
