Damn it ...if people are so interested in porn why not post nude porn contents in a relevant discussion forums. There are lots of them all over the internet.

There are differing opinions about this. Remember the battle with FCC over the Janet Jackson thing? Well some people do say that FCC went overboard with censorship. What I personally think about the issue is irrelevant, but don;t you think extreme censorship is also harmful and does stifle discussions and dissent? And isn't that what we are fighting for in Nepal anyway? The fact that porn exists and is a multibillion dollar industry in the USA and in much of western Europe along with simply the "hit count" on the supposedly porn postings in Sajha for the past couple of days shows "our" collective cognitive dissonance about the whole issue of censorship, morality and even sexuality as a human society. I would be very careful to do a knee jerk reaction and call for death of someone that I do not agree with - that would be akin to the reaction to the photos of the prophet mohammed issue.....

What happened here in Sajha over the last couple of days, in the absence of the administrator was rather (for the lack of a better word) sophomoric. Just some kids trying to push the envelope, at least I see it that way.

And again back to my post about "freedom of speech". Well for one thing, freedom of speech should exisit only in public spheres. I do not think that Sajha is such a medium, why? Well for one there is an administrator and that too unelected, that means Sajha is a Totalitarian society, benign at that and more tolerant than others, but totalitarian nevertheless. The administrator reserves the right to censor any post and kick out anyone that he does not like. And I am fine with that, and do not complain.

Now coming back to my general thesis, the fine line between "art" and "porn". The question that we have to ask ourselves is "is nudity by itself porn?" And I think the answer to that question is no. If it were, we would not have supposedly pornographic images in mandirs and tundals (especially around bhaktapur). All our gods seem very into "it", case in point, Mahadev looking into the world with Parvati in his side in Basantapur, notice where his hand is. And even in western world, you have everything from swimsuit version of "sports" illustrated to mainstream media, movies and this contant bombardment of different imagery, sometimes pleasant sometimes not and at other times very disturbing.

And it seems Eastern society (including Nepal, India and our SouthAsian continent) has become more prudish as time goes by and is a confused lot. One of the examples I give, I'm sure everyone has watched Hindi movies with erotic dances of heroes and heroines, and in the end no sex before marriage. Or in the same movies the heroine has to commit suicide after rape. Or if the heroine is god forbid a "tawaif", she will just perform the "art" of dancing and will not perform the other service. And all this prudishness has been imposed upon our Eastern thinking. We have been so conditioned to see everything sexual, distorted with this prism of disinformation. (I think it comes because of the rules and morals of the Victorian Emglish Gentry that occupied the subcontinent for such a long time, but I digress here). And we are still carrying that baggage.

The term "cognitive dissonance" I picked up from Peter J Karthak's post in Sajha a couple of months ago, it means "A condition of conflict or anxiety resulting from inconsistency between one's beliefs and one's actions, such as opposing the slaughter of animals and eating meat" an example, the posts in question in Sajha had one of the highest viewership (number of hits) on any post that I have seen in such a long time. That's why it kind of does not surprise me when I see a lot of people saying nude this or nude that or porn this or porn that.

Thinking in the same vein in my personal opinion the pictures generally posted in cybernepal.com lean more towards pornography than say a nude painting by Monet. Is it it is so too because one is trying to exploit sexuality and the other is trying to express it? I do not know the right answer to that.

hm........ I've been all over the place with this post, so I will not bore you any more..... but I do think that a general discussion about sex does not really hurt anyone and when one does jump to a conclusion, especailly when on discussions then there really may be something more beneath the surface than is apparent at the time...... and maybe we, as a society should explore that a little bit more that try to surpress or censor anything....

Actually I wanted to provide a real picture of Nepali mentality. I am not complaining whatsoever. Yes, of course, our attitude matters only when majority of people try to think positively. I am very proud to be a Nepali and I love my country, I am not seeing Nepal in a way you think. That does not simply mean that I have to love, like and accept the degraded mentality of majority of Nepali people.
Don't you have a say when you see all the politicians are corrupt and moral-less? (see their economic status before democracy and thesedays)
Don't you have a say when you find your(mine) prince killing people on the road?
Don't you have a say when you learn that the majority of civil servants are corrupt?
Don't you have a say when the IGP in your country is protecting criminals and he is not even being questioned and investigated?
Don't you have a say when you see people crossing the road jumping over the iron bar while there is a over-head bridge right above?
Don't you have a say when you observe a passenger not wanting to pay his/her bus fare in many public transportation in Nepal?
Don't you have a say when you learn that police get commission from pick-pockets?

Those are samples only. I know you can add a lot of questions like these. Not all these things are of great importance, but it certainly tells you the level of ethics in Nepali society. Money is praised and valued what ever the source it came from.
I am very sorry man, I am unable to offer any solution. The solution is not that easy coz there needs a big cultural change that is not easily achieved.
Education should have helped, but that is not the case in Nepal. Educated people are the people who are cheating the country most. I realy feel sorry for that.
