NHRC has made it clear by now who it stands for and whose voice it is speaking. Its failure in condemning any of the barbaric acts of the Maoists and SPA has made it very clear to even its core supporters that it is just a dollar growing company. It has not condemned the killings of journalists by Maoists, the recruitment of children in the army by Maoists, kidnapping and killing of innocent people, and also forceful participation of children in protests by the SPA. One of the few good things it has done is to summon SSP Thapa to investigate whether he used more force than necessary.

Whether SSP Thapa indeed used extreme force or not is another matter which should be investigated by a more credible institution. But SSP Thapa should not be onbliged to report to an institution like NHRC whose credibility has all but disappeared.

I think it is time that we raise voice to elect good people in NHRC rather than make it like a private company.
