"......he is the highest scorer for germany in world cup one ahead of klose. "

You mean this in one game or the total of different world cup games? Isn't Gerd Mueller
the highest scoring German in World Cup? He used to be the highest World cup scorer
util Ronaldo broke that recoed.

lol yeah. i forgot about gerd muller. he was the highest scorer for before ronaldo broke it. but yeah klinsmann is the first player to score at least 3 goals in 3 world cup with 3 in 1990, 5 in 1994 and again 3 in 1998. klose has scored one less 10. during the last match commentators were making banter may after klose was substituted they said " may be klinsmann dont want his record to be equalled".

Six reasons why Klinsmann quit

Six factors which probably influenced Juergen Klinsmann's decision not to extend his contract with the German football association (DFB) after two years:

- Klinsmann was always unpredictable and unconventional during his playing career -- he almost never stayed anywhere for more than two years and left some clubs, like Tottenham Hotspur, after just one season to move on.

- He is close to his family and cherishes his anonymous life in California.

- The DFB often clashed with Klinsmann during his two years in charge, challenging his decisions, denying several staff requests and hiring some executive personnel he opposed.

- Klinsmann faced constant second-guessing and criticism of his California home base and tactics from newspapers.

- He knows it will be hard to duplicate the success he has had in taking Germany to the World Cup semi-finals.

- Klinsmann does not need the money.

It's all about retiring with dignity, no one expected germans to go till SF, they did, came 3rd, and now he wants to retire with his head held high.

,Amongst the players whom I have seen playing, Klinsmann was one of my favorites. I never liked the German side, but Klinsmann was an exception. Unlike other German players who look so lethargic, Klinsman was very energetic and lively player.

But as a coach, I think Klinsamann is overrated. People now feel that Klinsamann has done great coz he managed to take Germany to Semi final of the World Cup.. but hey that is not what German team should be happy about. They reached finals of the World Cup in 2002. They are always a great team. So I think any thing less than the World cup should not be considered as an achievement for Germany.

To me, Klinsmann is overrated as a coach because his two year contract with German national side was really disapppointing. People in germany were really getting critcal of Klinsamann till the World Cup bagan. And despite disappointing performance of Germany in these two years, people now think that Klinsmann is good just coz German side reached semi final in WC defeating teams like Costa Rica, Poland, Ecuador, Sweden and Argentina. Except for Argentina (which they won in penalties), they have not beaten a real good team. And based upon these victories, people are praising Klinsmann.

And look how he looked after the team. In those twoe years, he used to travel from Southern California to Germany roughly once every two weeks. I have never seen a coach who stays abroad and still remains as a coach. That to me is dishonesty towards your profession. He runs his team from California. thats not good. I dont know any coach around the world who runs team from abroad.

And in two years of his reign, Germany's performance was dismal...Just before the World Cup, Germany was beaten 4-1 by Italy. And they were beaten 0-2 by "minnows" Slovakia. They were lucky to draw agaisnt Japan who could not hold on to the two goal lead despite playing much better than Germany during the whole 90 minutes.

So, i think people are just overrating Klinsmann for his part in taking Germany to the semi-final in WC. Just reaching semi-final should not be any accomplishment for Germany and because of the dismal performance of Germany during his 2 year as a coach, I think he is a below-average coach... though he was a grreat player.

rein, well thought out critical analysis. I like it.

I always liked Klinsmann. He was a great player. There should be no dispute in this. His record is exceptional and since 1990, has been a world class centre forward that held the line together even when the rest were dismal. His goal scoring tally is amazing.

But I don't think Germany can be proud of reaching the semi-final when clearly they have always been a side that threatens the World Cup trophy. Germany played well, looking to attack, but I think it was too much attack and the backline were always left vunerable. It always became a matter of time when the defense were exposed badly. Germany has always been able to control the ball well, both in midfield and defense. But eveytime I saw the ball possession stats, they were beaten 65-35, 60-40, and that is not the German football that I have come to know.

I mean where is the German expectation of winning the trophy? They said they didnot expected Germany to reach even the semi-final. This is outrageous. A team who has shown so much consistency over the past years, have always been a side to beat, and are now hosting the World Cup in their backyard, did not expect even to reach the semi-final?

they rightly didnt didnt expected germany to reach the finals. whatever germany has acheived is very good. german showed no signs before the world cup they were exceptional team. they lost badly drew few games. they played against italy and lost 4-1. everybody was calling for klinsmaan head then. but thankfull y next match against australia they won.
i think germany did exceptionally well with what they acheived and they could have won the world cup on the basis of their perofrmance. there was huge imporvement in german perfomance in this world cup.

even an ardent german supporter from germany didnt believe that they could reach this far considering the fact how they were playing before world cup.
