'Sa Karnali' documentary, visual treat for audience

Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, Sept 28 -
With music videos catching popularity in Nepal, there are very few songs these days which are not shot to a video. 'Sa Karnali' -- a popular song by Nepathya -- among other videos aired in different television channels, was acclaimed as one of the best in the lot for its unique singing style -- the Dolpali folk song cradles the spirit of the Dolpa region -- and its picturisation. While director Bhusan Dahal's idea has clicked well in the video, the location -- Dolpa's Juphal, Dunai and She Phokshundo Lake -- the choice of location has resulted in the video being outstandingly marvellous.

And on the sidelines of making the video 'Sa karnali', Kiran Kirshna Shrestha of nepa-laya busied himself to gaze through his movie camera lens during the whole shoot, consequently shaping the footages together to bring out a documentary named after the song itself -- Sa Karnali.

Dolpa, the largest district of Nepal, has bigger problems. One of the remotest regions in the country, this inaccessibility has kept the region away from outsiders. The documentary tries to capture the scenic landscape along with the problems persisting there and the sufferings of the people.

A woman who has walked miles to take her first glimpse of an aeroplane is one captivating moment in the documentary. In today's context when people are flying at faster speeds than sound travels, a woman in our own country was amazed to see an aeroplane flying. What musings come across one's mind when she makes a statement, "The driver must be very adept!"

One of the outstanding features of the documentary is Caravan-fame Thinley. Thinley who plays an old man from Dolpa's northern region has a major role in the video as he accompanies the main protagonist played by Amrit Gurung -- the singer himself. Thinley looks as natural as he did when he appeared in Caravan filmed by the veteran director Eric Valli.

Bhusan Dahal seems to be more sceptical and more alert as well to use Thinley in the video for he states in the documentary, "Since the audience is preoccupied about Thinley for he was picturised in one of the much-touted documentaries in recent years -- Caravan -- it's a challenge for me to give a new look to Thinley's character." And the director has handled the challenge adeptly and Thinley has performed his part with perfection to gel well with the theme of the video.

And Thinley, as usual, is down-to-earth and carries no air for his statements are so grounded that they quietly win over nearly everyone’s hearts. What Thinley says in the documentary shows his concern about the road construction and development works in the Dolpa region.

Another character is 'Jaya Baini' (Sister Jaya) who was chosen from the local girls but to everyone's amazement she seems to be too camera-friendly with pretty much of a natural performer in front of the camera.

All and all, the documentary has come out very well. The splendour of She-Phokshundo lake, the deepest lake in the country, could entice anyone but unfortunately it is not visited as frequently as it should be. A message can be drawn as well from the video. In our own country despite having such picturesque landscapes and natural beauty, we have not been able to tap into such resources to boost tourism.

Dolpa, which is one of the remotest and poorest districts in country, can also taste its share of development and economic prosperity, provided the authorities turn their eyes towards it.

The documentary gives a vivid glimpse of the landscape and scenery along with the lifestyle of Dolpa to urban people. The one-hour-long docu is a visual treat for the audience.

The documentary 'Sa Karnali' is being screened at Kumari Cinema this Friday onwards.
