Couple gets 55K for cancelled flight

AIR TROUBLE: The couple had gone to Kathmandu for honeymoon by a Royal Nepal airlines in June 1997.




New Delhi: A newly wed couple, who could not attend their own marriage reception at New Delhi as their return flight from Kathmandu was cancelled, have been awarded a compensation of Rs 55,000 by a city consumer court.


Holding the Royal Nepal Airlines guilty of "deficiency in services", the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Comission held it responsible for the ommission of its agent who allegedly did not inform complainants Vishal and Vandana Arya that their return flight from Kathmandu, where they had gone for honeymoon, was cancelled.


"Whenever any airlines makes an arrangements of sale of tickets through their agents or sub-agents it is vicariously as well as directly liable for the acts of ommission and commission of their agents," said the Commission bench headed by Justice JD Kapoor and Member Rumnitta Mittal.


The Commission disimissed an appeal filed by the airliner against the order of a District Consumer Forum which had asked it to pay the compensation for not informing the couple.



As per complainants, they had gone to Kathmandu for honeymoon by a Royal Nepal airlines flight in June 1997. They had already booked their return ticket for July 4 as their reception ceremoney was scheduled on the same day.


On the airport, Arya couple was informed that the flight has already been cancelled which forced them to miss their own reception.


Aggrieved by this, they aproached a consumer forum which, allowing their complaint, awarded Rs 55,000 as compensation.


The Commission, terming the airliner's appeal as "misconcieved and misdirected", upheld the forum's verdict.

I am not suprised - these guys are probably the worst managed airline in the world - at least in my experience. I say it's time to privatize.

actually who owns the RNAC? and who is the minister for civil aviation of Nepal?

RNAC staffs are the most careless of all. They get paid no matter regardless of being or not being airborne, so for them its like... 'hamro k jaancha ra?'
Have an experience to share... I was on duty that day and for some reasons we had to cancel our flight. Then I went to RNAC's counter (coz we had to adjust the ticketed passengers to some other flights) to inquire if they had some vacant seats. The one on duty said "Chaina, sab full bhayo sabai ticketed" I doubted RNAC would ever be all ticketed, still then .. wot could I do?? ... Later on, after their flight took off, i peeked into their pax(passenger) list.... To my surprise, there was just one name listed!! That moron lied to me. The poor company requires revenue, but the staffs look for just commission!!! What a pity??

Sunshine - I hear you. I also have a long list of horror stories about RNAC :) Especially it's non-existent customer service.

i also know that airport staffs are corrupted. whenever i return to nepal they always make my life difficult. saying things like "chair kanay paisa pay ya po"
i have always enter and left nepal through ktm airport and they always say the same thing to me.
and also say i have to pay for this kind of tax and that kind of tax although i already paid for airport tax.

and you know what! all these staffs seems to be bahun and chettris.

so care to tell me who is the minister ?

While Bahuns and Chettris might be predominant in RNAC when it comes to corruption, the greed for money cuts across caste barriers. Poverty and moral values, or the lack there of, rather than caste, seem to be the determinant.

well at least these staffs should think that they have a job. mind you Captain Haddock that many nepalis are jobless. they want to work but the government simply cannot provide the job.
giving excuse such as poverty is not the answer but the moral values shown by these indian lookalike staffs at the aiport.

every year millions of tourist come to nepal. where does all these revenue go to?
while other nations who started the airlines at the same year as nepal has progresses leap and bounds, Nepal's national carrier is nothing but a " flying coffin".

Bruce Lee - With all due respect, I don't think I can engage in a meaningful dialogue with you if you use racist and casteist epithets. "Indian lookalike"? You seem to seriously lack knowledge about Nepal's heritage with balatant comments like that. Short of killing or driving out all Bahuns and Chettris, I am not sure what the heck you are trying to get at.

If you really want to talk about reforming RNAC seriuosly, I'd suggest you drop that crap, and talk a bit more sense. I can talk about cleansing RNAC - not about cleansing people from Nepal.

Hello to all. But i have to share this experience with everyone.. RNAC manger in calcutta was bitten in the airport coz the flight got cancelled and there as only one aircraft and they had to fly two places.. insead of Calcutta they choosed to fly to Blore and the passesngers were told they will not be provided with accomodation and meal and the airlines cannot affort.
Look at the condition of our airlines company...

also i travelled to and from nepal several times so i know most of the airport staffs are chor, corrupted and descpiable human being.
