I am bit skeptical about whatever is going on in nepal. Lets hope everything goes well as planned. But have you thought...
What was the size of nepalese army during the merry time??? 50,000 ??? 75,000 (please correct me if I am wrong)
Now it has swelled to more than 100,000 due to this conflict. I believe police size might have swelled as well. In addition there is armed police force.
Maoists claim they have 30,000 - 50,000 militias.
Now they are talking about joining the militias into the army ranks.
How many will they add???? lets say 10,000.

Now the good times r coming back,
Will they keep the same swelled numbers of fighting force???? obviously NOT. It will be downsized, but at whose' expense??? Those military people who didnot think about their life to safeguard our interest, or those newly added maoists who they fought against???
Is it moral to strip the Army peope off their uniform after their contribution???
Will there be harmony between the regular army and the added ones after 10 yrs of bloodshed???
After being added in the NA, moists will be trained in advanced military fashion, they will have access to more sophisticated weapons than their bharuwas.
What about their loyalty???
Will it be towards nepali people???, nepali govt??? or PRACHANDA???
What will be their percentage in NA after the downsize???
Can we imagine a chunk of military loyal towards some party???
Now we r complaining the maoist atrocities, how will it be after the army will be backing them up too.
Can we be safe???
I won't be surprised when PRACHANDA will appoint himself as a KING.

Responding to questions on the future of the army and his armed cadres, prachanda said, "After the elections, both would be merged into a new national army. The old army would be democratised and the cadres professionalised. They would be jointly trained under UN observation. The new national army would be a small one — between 20,000 and 30,000 personnel."

Will nepalese army be turned into maoist army loyal to prachanda???????

Vas -

"Will nepalese army be turned into maoist army loyal to prachanda?"

Some might want to see that happen but I doubt it will happen unless something radical happens in the CA and general elections. All said and done, if free and reasonably fair elections are held, the Maoists might do well, but they wont get a free hand to structure the Army such that it becomes loyal to them. What I think is possible though is the Army might shed some off it's pro-palace stance as the position of the Monarchy weakens every day. This is assuming the moderates in the Army leadership prevail.

Just my thoughts.

Ok then tell me what happens after?
we will have interim government soon.

we will have election to decide the fate of monarchy.

In this circumstance, public will vote to kick the moachy out.

still, king will be there in the heart of kathmandu with the same informal power and authority

Prachanda might win the election partially and won't be able to get the majority

will prachanda and baburam be satisfied with the small number of seat in the parliament?

What will be their role? will they stop torturing people?

what happens to their 50,000 militia? will nepal government absorb those militia?

if not all 50,000, the remaining won't stay without getting something in return?

what will happen to the current army who fought to protect the nepalese people?

Why UML head, Mr. madhav kumari jee is yelling at girija in anticipation of the

distribution of cabinet?

why is he so hurry for position way before the peace process is finalized?

make sure that maoist won't come up to the parliament with their weapons in their pocket. we need peace, disarmament, and development later.

Jayamatadi -

I don't have a crystal ball to answer those questions with any certainty but if your point is Maoist disarmament, which is what I took away from your comment, then I am all for it. I agree that is the way to go.

Regards.

Jayamatadi,
Thank you!
These are indeed some crucial questions which are compelling every Nepalese’s mind to think politically towards contemporary political scenario of Nepal. However, we have to postpone these questions till the constitutional assembly because after 11 years of insurgency, we are now temporarily able to breathe freely and we want to live continue.
I hope that this is going to be a complete reform of Nepal and Nepalese politics (hopefully in a good way). Development of Nepal only comes after the maturity of complete reform, and the reform itself has yet to be completed.
Based on the home works done by the government and the Maoists, it seems that they both know their limits and they are likely to adjust themselves according to contemporary World’s interests: Nepal’s socio-geographic condition, India, and the US. Let’s hope that they will sign the peace consensus (which is now rescheduled to November 31st) and the both party will honestly act according to the peace pact.
We can do nothing except being optimistic!

AFTER PEACE TREATY, NEPAL WILL BE A PART OF HUDUSTAN, WE WILL BE SIMILAR TO BHUTAN WHERE PEOPLE ARE LIVING HIGH STANDARD LIFE THAN NEPALI, WE WILL BE USING INDIAN CURRENCY FREELY, PAYING HIGER RATES FOR ELECTRICITY & WATER, INDIANS WILL BE TAKING OVER ALL BUSINESSESS ESPECIALLY HYDROPOWER, ETC ETC NOTHING MORE GOING TO HAPPEN.

WE HAVE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN STAND AGAIST THE INDIA GOVERNMENT THAT IS KING, THE KIND DID NOT DO WHAT INDIAND WANT HIM TO DO, SO HE IS POWERLESS PRACHANDA DID WHAT HE IS TOLD TO DO, HE IS VERY POWERFUL NOW.

IT IS SURPRISING WHY THE KING DID NOT LISTEN TO INDIA TO MAKE HIS POSITION EVEN STRONGER ???

Kathmandu_Np

I see where you are coming from but please spare us the hideous Caps Lock.

"AFTER PEACE TREATY, NEPAL WILL BE A PART OF HUDUSTAN..."

Where does it say in the peace treaty that we will be merging with India?

"WE WILL BE SIMILAR TO BHUTAN WHERE PEOPLE ARE LIVING HIGH STANDARD LIFE THAN NEPALI, WE WILL BE USING INDIAN CURRENCY FREELY, PAYING HIGER RATES FOR ELECTRICITY & WATER, INDIANS WILL BE TAKING OVER ALL BUSINESSESS ESPECIALLY HYDROPOWER, ETC ETC NOTHING MORE GOING TO HAPPEN. "

I understand the concern but I think it is way overblown. Why would any of these happen? Who is talking about getting rid of the currency? You seem to be the first one. On the contrary, a strong and democratic Nepal has better chances of gaining credibility in India and the rest of the world rather than a weak and despotic one.

" WE HAVE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN STAND AGAIST THE INDIA GOVERNMENT THAT IS KING, THE KIND DID NOT DO WHAT INDIAND WANT HIM TO DO, SO HE IS POWERLESS PRACHANDA DID WHAT HE IS TOLD TO DO, HE IS VERY POWERFUL NOW."

What is it that the King did not do? And how did he stand up against India? Care to enlighten us?

What next after the peace treaty??

like i've been saying before, the next treaties will be:

1. military treaty with india -- this is a no brainer considering there is no trust (nor mutula admiration) between the maoists and nepal army and it is not simple for both of them to co-exist in peace and harmony. maoists do not want to be under nepal army and vice versa. both groups have legitimate arms power (in context of nepal) and this is the decisive factor: india is the biggest arms, ammunition, and logistic supplier to both nepal army and maoists. so, it might be less by choice of both army and maoists, but more so by their necessity. when this treaty were to happen it will be hailed by everyone from national to international players for finally putting an end to what could have been an ugly civil war.

2. foreign policy treaty with indialet's get real here, even without the treaty nepal really doesn't have any kind of foreign policy as shown during the recent UN security counsel votings. every foreign country / player intersted in nepal issues discuss and deal it with india first and then make their way into nepal. so, i think it makes perfect senes to sign the treaty to let india formally control and handle nepal's foreign policy (just like it does for bhutan...and we all know how successful india has been for bhutan even after kicking over 100K of it people out of their country, thanks to india's wonderful foreign policy this issue and bhutan has almost gone unnoticed in the international community). hell it will give nepali politicians 1 less thing to fight about if india were to handle and control our foreign policy.

Hukka Nepali -

With all due respect, both ideas are far fetched in my opinion. What is the need for an military treaty with India? The Maoists have pretty much committed to the status quo as are the NC, UML and even the King and Army. Why complicate it with a new treaty and loose credibility with the public?

Captain, i do agree that my opinion are somewhat far fetched but i don't think they are completely out of the question. based on my observation and the way things have palyed out in favor of as much in india's interest, as much as we might like to think in our interests and for long lasting peace. guess only time will tell but we need to keep an close eye to every india's action and reaction and not take them simply at face value.

"but we need to keep an close eye to every india's action and reaction and not take them simply at face value. "

I can agree with that.

And I am not accusing you personally of this, but a lot of times, when we talk about India, we tend lose our senses, and total paranoia grips us.

But I am all for healthy skepticism when it comes to India or the US or China's policies. Skepticism, not cynicism, is the way to go.

Guys let's not go too far with India and US and all those.. they r on the otherside of the tunnel, it won't even reach there..... first the issue needs to resolved within ourselves, within the 7-8 parties. As far as I can understand this peace treaty is heading towards dead end, waiting for time bomb to go off. It seems everyone is very optimistic, All nepalese citizens, diplomats, international community and also MAOISTS. Please read the excerpt taken from

http://kantipuronline.com/Nepal/aabaran.php (Please read this if you have time)

Even this maoist's own words seem to be conflicting. Above that Prachanda says nepalese army size should not be more than 30,000.

What do we expect from this ????? ....... another conflict ???
