Guys look at this data and think where is our beautiful & resourceful Nepal and where is Singapore. IT WILL MAKE YOU CRY, shame to all the leaders. Singapore: size 699 sq miles makes it 188th in land size; Nepal 56,827 sq miles makes us 93rd on mother earth. Nepal population: 27 million, makes us 42nd in terms of population; Singapore 4.4 million makes them 117th. NOW simply look AT THIS: Nepal's per capita income is $1,675 making us 153rd in the world. SINGAPORE $28,368 makes them 22nd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is shocking. WE CAN FIT APPROX 9 SINGAPORES in our land mass AND yet THEIR PER CAPITA INCOME IS ALMOST 25 TIMES OF Nepal. WHO CARES IS OUR ATTITUDE. SHAMEFUL.

IF you are situated in the path of all ships that cross between east asia and rest of the asia/africa/europe, it doesn't take long to be so rich.

Very true, Pire. Stop blaming the leaders all the time.. Nepal is a landlocked country in between the himalayas and India. What more do you expect? Compare their histories and then come to some conclusion.. kya taal taal ko manche aauchan yo sajha ma pani.. buddhi suddhi maru..

We need to build up more social capital, which includes factors like honesty, responsiblity, trust, industriousness. Singapore's social capital's worth a lot more than its gdp.

Its not the ocean or sea that makes a country rich or prosperious. May be we can't be as rich as Japan is...May be we can't be the richest country in the world...but common man we don't deserve to be 153rd either...we are there because of the leaders...everyone has to accept that fact. I won't wonder even one day, UN declares Nepal as a failure nation, coz we failed. Its not only the leaders as well, its also the attitude of the people in the country. Why are we always talking bout the ocean, sea and ship, there are two fastest growing nations in the world as our neighbouring nations. The sub-continent makes half of the world's population, american business and companies travel half way round the world to establish themselves in India and China. Where's our government's policy. Those so called politicians, leading the country, where the fk is the foreign policy. How many times in a day they think about the nation ? How many times have we seen those mofo's making one good decision for the nation ? Forget about everything else...how many times have we ourselves thought about the nation for a moment ??? We are here abroad...we are out of the slump..do we really wanna go bak ??? we have big talks, but ask one question to yourself, how many of us really wanna go bak to nepal, today??? We like to work in gas station, we swear on Indians... we don't like them...but we work for them...even in the US. The only time we talk about our country is when we are drunk...There is always an excuse for us not to go back to Nepal...either our studies are not complete, or our career just started or we are staying here for our children and their future...but the truth is we are all loosers...happy to be loosers...and blame everything on nature and fate of our country. Here's a very small comparision between Nepal and other landlocked countries... Switzerland: Population: 7,252,000 Percapita: 32,300 dollars Area: 15,940 Sq miles Luxembourg: Population: 465,000 Per Capita: $69,800 Area: 999 sq mi Mangolia: Population : 2,646,000 Per Capita: $2,175 Area: 603,909 sq mi Hungary: Population: 10,076,581 Per Capita: $17,405 Area: 35,919 sq mi Nepal: Population: 27,133,000 Per Capita: $1,675 (153rd) Area: 56,827 sq mi (those percapita are GDP) i'll make a detailed comparision later...

To all those who thinks water is the factor, take a look at Bangladesh. Sri Lanka, all the coastal countries in Africa. Why are they not rich yet? So water is definetly a small factor not the biggest.

Bob Marley, who said water is the factor? Read what I wrote carefully. If you look at the map, you will find that Singapore lies on the shortest path for any ship that goes from east asia to south asia, arab, africa and europe. Not all countries that lie on the water has that opportunity. Singapore does. Until sometimes ago, when business wasn't any flourishing, international trade was not as common, Singapore was just a fishing town. This is not excuse for our poverty, but Singapore can't be a sole basis of an excuse to blame the Nepali leaders also.

It is not appropriate to compare Nepal with Singapre or Switzerland on the basis of population and area. We have to analyse considering all the variables including the political boundaries nepal has had. Switzerland itself is sorrounded by deveopled ( since 14-15 century) countries like France. Singapore is an island. Nepal is sorrouded by most corrupted and uncivilized parts of India ( Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and West Bengal) and Tibet of China.

nepal is poor and always remain poor because they are people with loosers mentailty. harkeDai made an excellent point that the sole reason behind nation success dosen't lies in the location or the size. people is the most important resource lead by great leaders. and nepal lacks that leader. leader who is honest, capable, person with integrity and principle. singapore main natural resource was due to its stratagic location. and it made use of it. nepal has many natural resources too. but nepal's governmeent fail to see this. singapore with 4 different races are living and working harminously yet nepalese are all about fighting, breaking, vandalising and curfews. how do you want a nation to prosper with this kind of mentailty.

raidilip, You are right that people are crucial part. No denying of it. For example, two other countries which occupy significant strategic position are Egypt (the shortest path to go to Europe from Asia is suez canal, o/w you have to go around Africa, via South Africa in the way Vasoc DeGama et al travelled long ago) and Panama (the shortest path to go from eastern America to western part of America, o/w should travel via Chile which used to be norm before the construction of Panama canal). But both Egypt and Panama are not able to benefit from their strategic location for various reason. Nepal is poor for several reasons: one was there were no schools until 50 years ago, and we had this remarkably unstable period for last fifty years. Our students don't go to school anymore, go to strikes and there is always some reason for revolution. We don't have oil, we don't have minerals, o/w evenwithout education we could be rich like Saudi Arabia or Brunei. The only reason why were not like the poorest countries of the world was due to lack of ethnic conflict, which we might soon get anyway. Rahulbhai, I am not sure about Mahendra Malla. I knew that Pratap Malla had etched one French word in his famous shilalekh (I think it was sth like L'AMBERT or something like that, and I don't know the meaning). When Venetian priests reached KTM in seventeenth century, they apparently sent a mail to their friends back home, saying how surprised they were to see a beautiful city in the midst of those mountains. The city, they claimed, was as rich as Venice. I wouldn't doubt. With less population, he business opportunity provided by Bhim Malla's attack of Tibet, the contract to make all gold and silver coins of Tibet had made KTM very rich at one point of time during Malla era.

We can write several essays on How Nepal is poor? What should have done better? What are problems?but that does not help. In my view, the following are few factors why are we still poor and will be poor if there were not significant changes in following factors. 1) Dominance of uneducated or less educated people.Who are educated, they bark from abroad like we(including me)are doing. 2) Attitude problem in educated people(they do not appreciate good works, always comes forward to show up what they are, spends lots of time in argument rather than action. 3) High class people can't see progress of lower class people. and they are so many.People are behind all those factors..ntohing else.. For development of any developing country, one generation has to sacrifice.I don't see any syndrome of sacrifice from our generation. We love to enjoy pointing fingers and analyzing how we are poor rather than stepping forward to get sacrificed ourselves fro betterment of Nepal. Conlusion: "We are the reason for Nepal's poverty"

Instead of comparing Nepal & Singapore we need to compare between Singapore leaders and Nepali leaders. Look at our leaders and leaders from Singapore. see the differences. background check, education, and so on. nepali leaders are corrupted, chor, daku, liars, goonda and so.
