1950 Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

1950 Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship is a treaty signed by India and Nepal in 1950 that provides for agreement about movement of people between two countries and some other aspects of bilateral relations. Recently Communist Party of Nepal- Maoist have been raising questions regarding the provisisons of the treaty and want it to be scrapped. it is believed that the treaty hurts feelings of all Nepalese and is prejudicial to Nepal.

But not only Maoist of Nepal, Most of the populace in the country have objection towards this treaty.

What makes Indo-Nepal relationship very unusual is the thousands of kilometres of open boarder allowing free movement of People of these two sovereign countries. Many countries in the world are spending millions of dollars in defence protecting their boundary. This has saved both the nations tremendous amount of money, provide employment opportunities for millions of it’s citizens into each others territory. Moreover, what is to be noted is, those politicians of Nepal who demand the scrapping of this treaty have studied in India and have made India their safe heaven during difficult times. What they are trying to do is misguide the innocent people of Nepal to change their prospective towards the Neighbour. I personally feel that this treaty has benefited Nepal more then India as millions of Nepalese have found employment in India which otherwise would not have been possible. Why is there a Gorkha regiment in India and any other countries Regiment ? What we Nepalese have to understand is, Bhutan has send hundreds of thousands to its rightful Bhutanese citizens to Nepal as refugee only for being of Nepalese Descendents. Imagine if India did the same !! No politician has ever given a second thought of that have they?? Politics is business in these countries, that is the reason they change parties for the sake of Chair, MP's & MLA's are bought and shold like Cattles. It is this Political Breed of people one has to fear of who create differences among people for their benefit. The Congress, The Communists the Maoist all have taken sanctury in India and should not jeopardise the livelyhood of Millions of Nepalese in India by starting the conflict for their political gain. If they had the rights to hide in India to save their lives diring the difficulties, so do every single Nepali. specially while the politicians have made Nepal a No-mans land. Every single political party is to blame for the situation of the Country and they should diverT their full energy to build the Nation and not in the INDO-NEPAL TREATY.

I would most certainly not agree with all the things in the treaty , but one has to accept the fact that in 1950 when the Treaty was signed, most certainly Nepalese prospective towards India was different. Lastly, what I would like to share is:

There is a time when parents teach the toddler to walk, but the time will come when the same toddler feels he/she knows better then those good old folks who nurtured him/her with much difficulty. So, It is only Natural, People grow…..views change…..but relationship should never grow old.

In the year 1950, Nepal and India signed a controversial treaty in which it has been categorically mentioned that all treaties signed hitherto between the two countries have been annulled by this treaty. Thus, by this provision, the Sugauli treaty stands invalid in terms of its legality.

India should return our lands lost in Sugauli treaty. Once Maoists come in party, they should raise the issue of greater Nepal. If all the means fail, all Nepalese living in India should start another insurgency for the Greater Nepal. GNLF should direct this movement in that nation with the support of our commrades and Naxalites.

Pahadai Dai,

I am sure you know about these treaties. You have provided a lot of info. What is the basis for a citizen of Nepal to purchase property in India legally?
