I will be travelling to Nepal next month and most probably be working remotely from Nepal using VPN. Has anyone used this from Nepal.? How is the connection like? Is it good enough to work from there? Also I am planning to take Vonage phone from here so I can make phone calls to US. Does it work pretty smoothly? I have co-worker from India who has done it smoothly, granted the internet speed there in India probably is much better than Nepal.

Any Ideas..

Well, via dialup (the most popular method in nepal) i doubt u can get much done. There are other options though: cable and wireless (a direct radio link from the ISP to your place). These will be much faster and more reliable than dialup for sure, but still you wont get high speed as you are used to in the US.  Through the cable connection they market it as a 88kbps (kilo BIT) connection ... so u'll download at about 11 kbps (kilo BYTE) : and that too it costs about Rs. 6K a month. Even with wireless the cost comes out to the same for similar speeds. I think there are some providers who promise you a 124kbps downlink as well, dunno about the pricing on that. I would say you will be able to VPN and get some work done; but I wouldn't suggest heavily relying on it. Have some sort of backup plan ready where you can work offline. VOIP should be fine. I haven't tried it with the vonage service, but skype over the 88kbps line works pretty well.

Hope that helps

maximum dial-up seed in ktm is about 35 kbps...but normal dial-up speed is 10kbps. during peak hours you might have to wait for about 2-3 mins for a website to open. But there are other alternatives too... lot of cafes are coming up with paid hot-spots where you can browse internet for a minimal fee. There is a free hot-spot at annapurna cafe. there you can surf the net for free.

thanks guys for the input..

i don't think dialup is an option. i am pretty sure you can't even come close to VPN using dialup. the high speed sounds like it could help.

Can anyone that has used highspeed internet shed some light on this?

By the way how does the skype - voice over ip cost and who do i need to contact to get the service?

regards,

Last time, I tried BroadVoice (similar like vonage) with Wlink's what they call 128kbps download cable service. But didn't work. Upload speed wasn't enough. Upload speed was like one fourth of download speed which was like 32kbps (kilo Bits per second) ~ 4 kilo bytes per second.

I am not sure if internet speed have changed in Nepal now. I wish, with internet changes all over the world, we would have good speed in Nepal.

These days, there are a few broad services available to get a smooth Internet connection between your home and office.  Getting an acceptable voice quality phone system that works all the time is still a big challenge.  You can try the broadband services offered by Worldlink, Subisu or Mercantile -- there are other companies that provide these services as well.  From my knowledge of the marketplace, Subisu is the most reliable, but more expensive.  Just be sure to tell them you are interested in their interent service because they often talk about their intercity fiber (which is excellent).  Irrespective of your choice, my suggestion is that you try to talk to a senior staff member before making a final selection so that you can get expedited support through that person if necessary.

If you are traveling from the States, where broadband ubiquitous and affordable, the prices in Kathmandu might startle you.

ISPs don't provide VOIP solutions yet (as of Dec 2007).  A vonage system, skype, or other VOIP solutions including the ones that are integrated with your PC will work.  However, getting it to a level acceptable for business is still a challenge.

Magic Jack  and Skype work perfectly. If you're within the city cable and wireless networks will work. Most people in cities at least have stopped using dial up. My parents use a 3g card to connect skype with video. Also they like out side ring road  about 10 kms away. You can also check ntc site. Here you go.

I left nepal in 2006. I know, the premium package from subisu used to charge around Rs. 7000 for 128 kbps for home user. They mostly deliver the said speed, but sometimes could go slow. But I heard now they are down to less than 1000 rs. and mostly replaced by ntc adsl. It is good if someone could update and compare what it is now.
