My OPT is going end by the end of next month and H1B will be effective from October 1st only. So I have a gap of one month. Was it necessary for me to file "change of status" (see April 18th rule published by USCIS) to work during the gap of one month or I simply get automatic expansion for the cap gap ? Anybody in the same situation

Just send your H1B approved doc to the college, USCIS will issue you new I-20 but soon after you submit docs it's all automatic expansion, you don't have to wait for your new I-20.. just continue to work..
