WEXFORD, Pa. — A Chicago doctor was charged with homicide by vehicle after he crashed into a motorcycle on the Pennsylvania Turnpike after fleeing Ohio police, who tried to stop him for speeding, police said.
Ohio police tried to stop Dr. Shiva Lal Acharya, 35, for going 76 mph in a 65 mph zone about 3:35 a.m. Thursday, according to Pennsylvania State Police. Acharya then took off, reaching speeds of 130 mph.
Ohio police ended the chase after 23 miles and alerted Pennsylvania police as he approached the state line, police said. Pennsylvania troopers tried to stop him, but he was going too fast, police said.
Acharya struck the motorcyclist from behind, then fled his BMW on foot into the woods about 4:10 a.m. in Pine Township, about 15 miles north of Pittsburgh, police said. Police found him hiding in the woods shortly after 8 a.m.
Acharya had been on his way to a job interview in Easton, police said. He was charged with homicide, hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident and other traffic violations.
The identity of the 46-year-old Green Bay, Wisc., motorcyclist was not released.
Eastbound lanes of the Pennsylvania turnpike between the Cranberry and Butler Valley exits were closed for several hours during the search.
