चौतारीमा केरकार शैलीमा लेखेको थिएँ, त्यसैलाई बाहिर प्रस्तुत गर्दैछु। "Hunker down " भन्ने सरकारी आदेश वा सुझाव पालना गरेर यतै बसेको, सार्है नै दु:ख पाइयो गाँठे। 

दुई हप्ता अघिको गुस्ताभेको सम्भावित आक्रमणलाई ध्यानमा राखेर खाने पानी, टर्च बत्ती तथा फ्रीजमा राख्न नपर्ने खानेकुराको त प्रशस्तै जोहो गरेको थिएँ। तैपनि बिहीवार बिहानै साहूले छुट्टि दिएपछि सीधै वाल्मार्ट गएर थप त्य्स्तै सामान किनें र गाडीको ट्यांकी पनि भरें।

शुक्रबार त बिहान घमाइलो थियो, दिउँसोसम्म पनि अलिअलि घाम लागिरहेको थियो। साँझ पर्न थालेपछि आकाश कालो हुँदै गयो र हावाको जोड पनि बढ्न थाल्यो। केही सहकर्मीले सम्झाए अनुसार बाथ टब पनि पानीले भरें, पानीको आपूर्ती अवरुद्ध भएको खन्डमा शौचालय चलाउन अवरोध नहोस् भनेर। लुगा पनि एक लोड धोइहालें, आइके बजियाले बिद्युत आपूर्ती अवरुद्ध गर्ने कुरा प्राय: निश्चित भएकोले। आफूसँग न त माटोको अटल छ, न त डल्ले साबुन। भए पनि कहिले चलाएको भए पो त।

टि.भी र ईन्टरनेटमा बारम्बार हेरिरहेको थिएँ, मुख्यत: आइकेकै चर्तिकला। ल्यान्डफल हुन केही समय बाँकी रहे पनि तटीय क्षेत्रमा त छालले बिहानै देखि असर गर्न थालिसकेको थियो। क्याटेगोरी २ अथवा ३ को रुपमा मध्यराततिर आइकेले जमीन हान्ने अनुमान थियो। राती १० बज्दा हावाको बेग निकै बढीसकेको थियो। झ्याप्प बत्ती गयो, तर तुरुन्तै आयो। मैले कम्प्युटर फेरि खोलिनँ तर टि.भी भने हेरिरहेँ। एक दुई चोटि बत्ती फेरि झ्याप्प जाने आउने भयो। ११ बजे तिर सुत्न गैयो। सुत्न त के सक्नु निरन्तर हावाको आवाजले। एकै छिन् रोकिए जस्तो हुन्थ्यो फेरि हुइँहुइँ गर्दै चर्किन्थ्यो। मध्यराततिर बत्ती निभ्यो। पानी पनि जोडसँग पर्न थाल्यो।  धातुको पाता जस्तो केही केही बज्रिरहेको जस्तो आवाज पनि बेला बेलामा आउँथ्यो।  आफूलाई चाँही छानोमा रुख ढल्ने हो कि, आफ्नो गाडी नै कच्याक कुचुक पारीदिने हो कि भन्ने चिन्ताले सताइरह्यो। कुनै गर्हौं बस्तुले झ्याल फूटाइदेला कि भन्ने उत्तिकै पीर।

निद्रा नलागे पछि त आफूलाई पानी खाइरहनु पर्ने, अनि चर्पी पनि गैरहनु पर्ने। नेपालमा जस्तो मान्द्राले बेरेको बाहिरी चर्पी भएको भए त के गरिन्थ्यो होल। जसो तसो रात कट्यो, बाहिर हेर्दा बाटोमा रुखका हाँगा र स्याउला यत्रतत्र छरिएका थिए। केही मत्थर भए पनि हावा र बर्षा जोडसितै भैरहेका थिए। गाडीको जतिसुकै चिन्ता लागे पनि बाहिर निस्किहाल्नु सुरक्षित लागेन। बत्ती त के आएको होस्। सेलफोन बन्द गरेरै राखें ब्याट्री जोगाउन। आखिर सिग्नल पनि राम्रो थिएन। केही घण्टाको अन्तरमा केही मेसेज छ कि हेर्न भनेर खोल्यो, त्यो पनि नेट्वोर्कको समस्याले गार्हो। ल्यान्डलाइन पनि नचल्ने, कमकास्टको फोन लिएको, मोडेममा पावर नभए पछि कसरी चलोस्। ब्याट्रीबाट चल्ने रेडियो नै संचारको एउटै माध्यम रह्यो। रेडियोबाटै थाहा भयो, ग्याल्भेस्टन टापूमा धेरै क्षति भएको रहेछ। ह्युस्टनका सबैजसो ठाउँमा बिजुली गएको रहेछ, अनि प्रमुख राजमार्ग लगायतका धेरै ठाउँ डुबानमा परेका रहेछन्।

दिउँसो बाहिर निस्किएर गाडी हेर्दा सुरक्षितै रहेछ, तर नजिकै एउटा रुख ढलेर अरु गाडीलाइ भने क्षति पुगेको रहेछ। आफ्नो छरछिमेकको वरिपरि यसो निस्किएँ, धेरै ठाउँमा ढलेका रुख र बिजुलीका खम्बा अनि लत्रिएका तारहरु देखिए। छेवैको खोलो पनि बेस्सरी बढेको रहेछ। केही घरहरु रुख ढलेर क्षतिग्रस्त भएका थिए। मूलबाटोमा बिभिन्न ब्यवसायीका साइनबोर्डहरु पनि छरिएका थिए।

आईतवार केही ब्यवसायहरु खुल्न थाले, कुनै जेनेरेटरबाट कुनै चाँही बिद्युत सुचारु भएर। सीमित मात्रामा बरफ बेचेका थिए केही ठाउँले। दुई हप्ता अघि जिम्मालसँग काटेको खसिको मासु बचाउनु नै मेरो सबैभन्दा ठुलो चिन्ता थियो। दुई पोका बरफ दिएको थियो त्यो दिन, त्यसैले मोरेर बचाउन कोशीश गरें। पछील्ला दिनमा पनि त्यस्तै गरी बरफ थप्दै गरेको छु, हेरौं कत्तिको सफल भईएको छ। फ्रीजमा राखेको प्राय अरु सबै कुर त फाल्नै पर्‍यो।

अहिले क्रमश बिद्युत आपूर्ति सुचारु भए पनि हिंजो साँझसम्म करीब ३५% ग्राहकले मात्रै बिजुली पाएका थिए। आफू बाँकी ६५% मै छु। अर्को ३-४ हप्तासम्म लाग्न सक्छ भन्छन्, आशा गरौं त्यति समय त नलागोस्। तातो खान नपाएर कस्तो छट्पट्टी भैरहेको छ। बाहिर पनि कति पैसा खर्च गर्नु, घरकै खानेकुरा फाल्न परेको बेलामा। तातो त खान पाइएन पाइएन बियर समेत् चिसो पारी राख्न पाइएन भन्या। बाहिरको तापक्रम चाँही केही घटेकोले अलिकति राहत मिलेको छ। शनिबार र आईतवार त एकदमै गर्मी थियो।     

हिंजो साँझ बाहिरबाट फर्किने क्रममा आफ्नो बसाइ नजिकैको थ्री-वे स्टप साइनमा रोकिएँ। अघिल्तिरको घरमा बत्ती बलेको देखेर आफ्नोमा पनि आयो कि भन्ने आश जाग्यो। गाडी मोड्दा पो थाहा भयो त, आफ्नै हेडलाईटको रिफ्लेक्सन भएको रहेछ। आज बिहान निस्कुन्जेलसम्म पनि बत्ती आएको थिएन, इस्त्री नगरेकै कमीज लगाएर अड्डामा आएँ।

Good to see so many Houstonians around here.

The rush hour traffic in the Galleria area has become absolutely horrible due to disfunctional traffic lights. I was thinking of taking the Westpark Toll(free)way but changed my mind after seeing a mile-long jam at the 610 and 59 interchange. I think it was a bad decision, took me over half an hour to pass the mile or so long stretch on Westheimer.

The street lights outside my residence came up on Saturday night but I was still in the dark as of this morning.

Yesterday's morning traffic was a bit busier than normal but the evening traffic turned out to be my worst commute ever. I-610 North between Kirby and Westheimer was backed up. Usually, the evening traffic flows smoothly (except for those exiting to 59) until slightly past the Westheimer exit while the opposite lanes are backed up. After finally exiting at Westheimer, I was hoping a smoother flow since I had noticed on Sunday that all traffic lights were functional in the Galleria area (and also hoping that more people were using the tollway). That did not help at all with the congestion. After finally reaching Chimney Rock, I thought of bypassing Westheimer by taking San Felipe. That was a very bad mistake. San Felipe was backed up even worse. None of the traffic lights were functional after crossing Voss. It took me over two hours (and an unknown additional amount of gasoline) to complete my 15 mile drive that usually took me around 35 to 40 minutes.

20 min ..office to ghar ko bato...2hrs 30 mins laagyo...agadi janu parne ma dherai left right nai gariyo, kahile richmond chiryo, kahile westheimer, kahile 59...3 din ko gas 1 din mai jhwam.....ghar pugda...ajhai batti ayena..

Techguy, same here. I did manage to cut my commute by about an hour. It took me about an hour and 20 min compared to about 2 hours 15 min on Monday. Of course, there was no power at home. The ones across the street already got theirs

Sorry folks to hear that you don't have power yet. I was lucky in that dept. I live in pearland and we got light last tuesday, a week ago. As far as traffic is concerned, I am also PIDIT. Takes me hour and a half to reach downtown from pearland, about 14 miles distance.

I used to take the Almeda Rd right into downtown passing Medical Center. This morning thought about taking 288N. When I saw the traffic backed up in 288 upto Beltway 8 South, I just made a U-turn and took Almeda again. Left home at 6:40 in the morning and reached work at 8. That Sucks!

Congratulations to techguy and mysteryman. I hope I will have better luck with both the commute and power tonight.

After the traffic mess in Westheimer, I started taking the Bellaire exit from Thursday. There were many nonfunctional traffic lights but the intersections were controlled by police and the traffic flowed pretty smoothly. The power was not restored yet when I reached homeon Friday evening. Later that evening, I bought a six-pack of beer, along with a bag of ice to keep it chilled. After a dinner/snack of canned food and 3 beers, I went to bed shortly before midnight. Woke up around 2, and yes, THE POWER WAS RESTORED!!!!. I happily went back to sleep after VOLUNTARILY turning off the lights. The next morning, I managed to brew some coffee after over two weeks. There was a lot of cleaning to be done. It took pretty much the whole day to clean up, particularly the refrigerator. The first items to enter the newly repowered and cleaned refrigerator were the remaining 3 bottles of beer (not that there was any other refrigerable item left, as everything had to be thrown away). I went to HEB later that evening, did some basic grocery, and grilled some bison steak and vegetables, and enjoyed my first hot dinner at home along with the 3 beers. Did more grocery shopping yesterday (and ran a pretty high bill as I had to restock perishibles), ani balla majaale bhaat pakaaera khaana paaiyo.

I know, there are still quiet a few of us without power, and I can very much feel that pain. Sabai ko gharma chhitai batti aaos.
