Shah Rukh Khan detained for 2 hours at Newark Airport in US

Indo-Asian News Service
New Delhi, August 15, 2009

Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan was on Saturday questioned for two hours at the Newark airport in the US over his surname and was freed only after Indian diplomats intervened.

The Indian government and entertainment industry reacted furiously after the 43-year-old actor, named by Newsweek last year as one of the world's 50 most powerful men, revealed how he was detained and stopped from even using his mobile telephone.

Speaking to CNN-IBN channel on telephone from the US, Shah Rukh appeared to shrug off the embarrassing episode saying he had suffered similar treatment previously too.

The incident happened as the hugely popular actor, whose fans number millions in India and abroad, was on his way to Chicago to attend an event related to India's Independence Day.

Other Bollywood stars like Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan too are set to attend the function.

"They checked me because I was an Asian," the actor said. "They wanted to know why I came to the US and where I am staying."

Shah Rukh's manager Niloufer Qureshi earlier told IANS over telephone from Mumbai: "He was detained because his surname is Khan. He was kept until officials from the Indian embassy intervened."

Asked if he got into trouble because of his giveaway Muslim name, Shah Rukh, who is married to a Hindu, said: "Certain countries have issues with my name." He quickly added: "I am very proud of my name."

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni denounced Shah Rukh's detention over religious grounds.

"I don't think that this manner of detaining (in the name of religion) is justified. But in the US, several examples have surfaced where frisking takes place more than required," she told reporters in New Delhi. "There should be a tit for tat response."

Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar, a close friend of Shah Rukh, said in Mumbai: "I am shocked and upset. I am feeling terrible."

Shah Rukh admitted that he became "greatly worried" as the American officials piled him with questions -- mainly about his travel to the US.

The actor said a large number of Indians, including organisers of the Chicago event, were waiting outside at the airport to receive him. Indian diplomats came to his rescue when they heard about his plight.

He said it was ironic that the incident happened on the eve of Aug 15 -- when freedom is celebrated by Indians.

"I personally feel it is over and done," he said, sounding conciliatory. Asked if he felt like reacting in a similar way, he replied: "If they want I can frisk Angelina Jolie when she is here (India)."

Undoubtedly one of Bollywood's biggest and most highly paid stars, Shah Rukh has acted in nearly 70 films in a career spanning 17 years.

CELEB DETAINEES...

Irrfan Khan was stopped for questioning not once but twice. The first time at Los Angeles airport. He was there to receive an Independent Spirit Award for The Namesake. The actor claims he was detained because he is a Muslim.

Neil Nitin Mukesh were also detained in a similar fashion but at New York airport, where he was scheduled to shoot for Yashraj film New York. Immigration Authorities allegedly stopped Neil because they couldn't believe he was from India

It is ridiculous that he think he deserves better treatment.

Khan is a very popular name in Pakistan and India. If Bob Smith gets pulled aside for random checking and the white hair senator gets stripped down at the airport (even Al Gore got some stopped at one of the airport), what makes you think Mr Khan should be treated better. After 911, there is no room for mistakes. I've been searched twice, no problem for me. Safe than sorry. If a Khan (let's say a Paki) gets through the airport and blows up another plane, is this Shah Ruk going to come to defend the innocent people like he does in his movies? Hahaha. Is he going to be liable or the TSA employee?

Funny how India cannot defend themselves from Pakis coming to their country and blowing up hotels and killing their citizen, like we saw few months back, and they have the audacity to cry racial profiling when the US is doing its job to protect their citizen. Racial profiling or not, the TSA employee did the right thing.

One billion people might know him, but there are 5 more billions who do not give a rat ass about Bollywood shit. I hope his new movie "My name is Khan" is about teaching fundamentalist not to blow up bombs and kill innocent people, but I won't be surprised if it is all about his sorry ass, crying, heart broken life story about having a Muslim name, which is NOT the real life lesson the world needs to stop terrorist. This SOB is doing all these to gain more publicity.

Nobody is going to be sorry for this incident and you'll not see Homeland Security or even the TSA apologizing. Not going to happen.

PS...I'm learning Mr Khan is changin his tone now and a bit of his story. What a shame.

Wikipedia describes frisking as:

Frisking or a "patdown" is a search of a person's outer clothing wherein a police officer or other law enforcement agent runs his or her hands along the outer garments to detect any concealed weapons or other contraband.

Ambika Soni, in the original article is quoted as saying:

"..several examples have surfaced where frisking takes place more than required ..there should be a tit for tat response."

Finally, towards the end of the article, khan, the good samaritan that he is replies to all of this with:

"If they want I can frisk Angelina Jolie when she is here (India)."

It gets better with raju161's post showing us the Indian side of this whole "frisky" deal:

Praful Patel (Minister of State for Civil Aviation) says: "The frisking was absolutely unpardonable..Actions will be taken in accordance with the sentiments of the house... the former president and other such dignitaries are exempt from such frisking".

I dunno, maybe it was the wine I had last night, but reading the news in the morning has me thinking they're all playing sum sexy game, rubbin and huggin. Tits for tats. Unpardonable acts of frisking going on, involving fantasies of frisking Angelina Jolie. mmm.. what am i missing here ? ;)

Good Morning people!

This is a PUBLICITY STUNT BASED ON LIES to promote Shah Rukh Khan's next movie "My name is Khan". Even if frisking or interrogation were performed on him, it should be of no surprise because there have been enough truly global icons who have been the victim of Homeland Security vigilance but they did not make a big hue and cry over them. For example, Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam) of "Katmandu" song fame was denied entry into the US probably because of his Islam conversion. Another one, Amy Winehouse, six grammy nominee was denied visa to the US because of her drug addiction but still performed live on TV in real time amidst five grammy wins. Our very own cinema icon Rajesh Hamal was denied US visa.
This episode proves that,  people of India like most South Asian countries, do not hesitate to claim of being victims based on lies, under-employed people support the victim with protest demonstrations, and Government officials retort with sharp remarks without proper analysis. If Indians are so angry at their so called "global icon" waiting at the airport for his baggage, why doesn't he start traveling in private jets?
The 911 hijackers were of middle-eastern descent. Obviously, anyone resembling them would be more likely to be subjected to more thorough screening. If you got nothing on you, why should you be worried? The officers are just doing their jobs.

Was completed in 66 minutes

WASHINGTON: Allegations that Bollywood
megastar Shah Rukh Khan was 'detained' for two hours on account of his last
name are incorrect, US Customs and Border Protection officials said on Saturday,
maintaining that the process of clearing him lasted a little more than an hour
and even that delay was because his baggage had not arrived on the same flight
he did.

In clarifications to the media aimed at giving their version
of the episode that has created a ruckus in India -- and attracted wide coverage
in the US -- CBP officials gave the following sequence of events. After a
preliminary check at the immigration counter, Khan was recommended for a
secondary check in a separate room (for reasons the CBP would not
specify).

Because there were other people ahead of Khan in the room,
this process took a little time and this was further extended because the
airline had failed to load his checked luggage on the same flight
. Still, the
whole process took a little more than an hour, officials said, maintaining that
'C.B.P. strives to treat all travelers with respect and in a professional
manner, while maintaining the focus of our mission to protect all citizens and
visitors in the US.' The New York Post quoted one official saying the whole
process took 66 minutes.

Meanwhile, Khan reeled back a little from
his initial rage against the security process, telling a news agency, 'I think
it is a procedure that needs to be followed. But it is an unfortunate
procedure.' In engagements in Atlantic City and Chicago over the weekend, he
said he does not feel like stepping on American soil anymore, but the 'love and
affection of his fans' would keep bringing him back. He also ruled out seeking
an apology for the incident.

The Khan episode attracted plenty of
attention in the US and across the world with media outlets and blogs holding
forth on the incident. 'Wrath of Profiled Khan' the New York Post said in a
story, while the New York Times blogged on the incident under the headline
'Questioning a Bollywood VIP.' The incident was also reported extensively in
the Islamic world. 'Muslim name holds India Star at US airport,' the portal
Islam Online reported.

While thousands of fans reacted with blind
outrage over the perceived slight to their hero, others saw felt the incident
was blown out of proportion (variously by Khan, his supporters, and even the
media).
A few saw it as a publicity stunt. 'He’s come to America tons of
time before and it has to happen when he was promoting 'My Name is Khan' about
a Muslim boy who goes to US post-9/11?' asked Anirudh Bhati, a student from
Gandhinagar, Gujarat, in an online message to ToI. 'Now I’m gonna watch
the movie no matter what happens.'

The difference is you are known only by certain sector of people. Though I do pity Sha Ruhk Khan for what he had to go through even though I am have too much disdain for Bollywood material, I am very sure he'd better throw the idea of frisking Angelina Jolie if she ever comes down to India.

The other side,

Newark, arguing that it should primarily be seen as a security issue and that it’s really. no big deal in an America still spooked by the ghost of 9/11, has found overwhelming support from surfers

Of the about 1,000 comments (till 3.30 pm on Sunday) on the blog, most agreed the episode was being blown out of proportion by Shah Rukh Khan and the Indian government.

Murali M wrote, ‘‘I lived in US for few years and saw the security arrangements
they make, particularly in the immigration segment... Shah Rukh Khan was only
sent to secondary immigration check and “detention” and “release” are wrong
words for that. We in
India too should learn to implement (a) more fool proof
security system.’’ Divya Seethapathy commented, ‘‘Very aptly said. The officer at the airport was only doing his duty and I feel the media is making a mountain out of a molehill. The media does not have to project it as a reflection of every Indian’s sentiment. As Indians we love our stars but at the same time we also respect the laws and regulations of other countries.’’

Many of those who commented were upset that
SRK’s reaction that he was upset and angry was being seen as the reaction of the whole of India.

Seema Shahani Hiranandani said, ‘‘Yeah, I guess Shah Rukh is all flustered ‘coz
he thinks he’s above the rest, the common man’.’’

SankAr asked Shah Rukh Khan ‘‘not to be a baby’’. He said, ‘‘my mother is 60
years old and when she travelled with my dad (to the
US) she was pulled for secondary (check) and she was fine after that (we are Hindus). This is a very routine thing in US.’’

Khalida Almas said, ‘‘why make a big deal of this situation, any country has the right to do security drills, why should a celebrity be given a
VIP pass and not go through what we common people go through. As it is, in India their egos are too high — he could have gone through it patiently and that would have proved to be really humble but he chooses to get in the ministry involved. America has a right to be strict.’’

And Mohammad Khalid had this to say. ‘‘This is Shah Rukh Khan’s publicity stunt
for his new movie, ‘My Name is Khan’. If the same thing would have happened
some other time he would not have made such a big fuss. Grow up Shah Rukh Khan
... stop using great Islam for your own business benefits. Allah bless
Hindustan!’’

He was detained because the authorities that handled him didn't know who Shahrukh Khan was.

The fact is, Shahrukh is only recognized in some parts of the world (India, Nepal, Pakistan, Africa, etc).
Angelina Jolie is recognized all over the world.

When the West does not recognize Shahrukh Khan and detail him for 2 hours, Bollywood gets hurt.

Why we worried about him? It may happen to us too?
You all  knew Mr. Khan, does the immigration officer know him? Who cares and why do they care?
