Hi,

I had Ubuntu and XP on my laptop (IBM T43), I wanted to removte the Ubuntu, then I deleted the partition. When I rebooted the device, it says:

GRU loading Stage1.5

Grub Loading, please wait

Error 17,,

What should I do to get to the windows XP?

Please help

I've not tried it on XP but I have been in that situation many a times with Windows 7 and windows vista partitions. Win7 and vista recovery/boot disk you can launch command prompt. Always worked. Not sure if the commands are the same because they xp and vista have diff boot loader.

boot in to command prompt.

x:> diskpart
diskpart> listdisk ( this will list the disks you have )
select disk 0 ( zero is the first hard drive)
list part ( to know how many partitions you have)
select part 1 ( where 1 is the first partition where xp was, select 2 if xp was the second partition)
active ( this will make the partition active)

orrrr.... just to

x:> bootrec/fixmbr ( fixes master boot rec which is used to boot)

Do you have windows vista boot disk ? The above process works flawlessly with that I've not used it for xp ? What I said was boot into command prompt and type the above commands. Whats going on is ubuntu has Grub loaded into your Master Boot record, which is different from windows thats why it wont boot.

Edit:
Google around, you will find lots of ways to fix the boot record issues after ubuntu.
hope this helps.

I have no CDs with me at this time. As soon as I reboot,  I get the error message.

The only thing I can do is, when I press access IBM, I can go to the bias.

That's it..

If you have tried everything, You can buy or borrow a xp cd and reformat every thing as last resort. Go to Craigslit.org and your city and check on computer and tech , people may sale  xp for 10 dollars.
Which state you are in?

Ram kumari, you could always create a boot cd if you dont have the OEM disks and then do fixmbr.

I would download all the driver (that are uptodate) online and do not waste $19 for recovery disk. Hope this helps.

As Nikesh said, Do not waste money on buying driver cd,

You can download free of cost on line, If you can not go on web, do it from other other computer.  Download on removable hard drive specially Ethernet Driver. It will let you go on line and once you are able to go to web, got to IBM tech support and down load site , put your service tag number and start downloading what ever you needed. You can utilize that 19 dollars but do not waste in buying drivers.

Once you able to fix it , I hope you will be knowing something about computer.
Good luck.

I am guessing RamKumari has limited knowledge like me, it sound easy to you folks but will be lost like कुइराको काग

This happened to me a lot.

Here are few things what you can do.
1. Find some program on internet that you can edit boot so that you can remove the GRUB(ubuntu) boot and use Windows Boot..
2. Try re-Install Ubuntu again, but make sure when you install it see Windows Partion. Ubuntu does not take lots of space so you can do with either 3 GB or 4GB.
