I am a Comptuer Science Major Junior. I am about do a Minor and was wondering which minor would be the best to do. I was a Science student in my +2 days so i have no idea of business field and i am kinda interested in Mathematics. Somebody told me that doing Maths Minor would be good for a Computer Science student since it would show that the student is more talented in calculation kinda things. While somebody says that minor in business administration would be better for the current job market. Could you please give me your advice

Well.. it depends... if you wanna go for higher studies in computer science and later go into the research field then taking mathematics will really help... and if you go for business administration and/or information system , it is good to find jobs in those fields..but still, you need strong mathematics for this tooo...

maths would be your best bet.

I was in a similar situation as you back in college. I was majoring in Electrical and Comp Engineering and was undecided between minor in Econ vs. Math/Physics. I took two econ classes and realized I could just read a book and learn what the hell they were talking about. I liked physics but I soon realized in higher level physics classes all you do is math. So I decided to minor in Math. Also, my decision to minor in Math was because I wanted to go to grad school at the time. It looks like you want to work in the industry. If you are applying as a programmer, your employer couldn't care less whether you have a math minor or a business. Don't choose classes thinking it might be useful to impress employers/admission folks in the future. I ended up working in the industry and all my Math was in vain! Just kidding. If you haven't taken any economics classes I would suggest you take one or two. (I had to as a part of my social science elective).

But I will say one thing: Math courses definitely opened my horizon. I liked them so much, I was 2 courses shy of a major. If you do decide to take up Math as a minor, consider taking some of these courses:
linear algebra/vector spaces (you will finally understand what the heck is a matrix), probability/statistics, stochastic processes/random variables (these are used almost everywhere from algorithm analysis to signal processing), combinatorics, graph theory (used in theoretical comp sci problems...those NP hard, complete stuff), differential equations(used in modeling), number theory (used in encryption).

Hey don't go for any minor. Just take couple of math classes and some business just to make some credit and experience just to qualify for graduation. Since you are science student, math or business both help you later in life. For me I took some math (calculus, stat - no help for my masters degree) and also business classes as well. I think it indirectly helps  you but I didn't see any great help though.

same pinch... I am also wondering about doing minor. I am majoring in Nursing and thinking about doing minor either in Psychology or Community health. Do you guys have any suggestions about it or any new ideas. Thank you

I completed my undergrad with dual degree in Computer Science and Mathematics. In terms of landing up on a  job related to CS, doing minor or major in Maths in combination with Computer Science may impress an employer at the first glance when they see your resume but I don't see any plus point after that. You need to be an expert in CS or exceptionally well in programming if you want to land up on a job in this recession.  Here is my sincere advice to you if you are a CS major. Pick up a major project on your own, like try to develop an application for iphone/android, develop a dynamic website, learn programming languages that are not taught in your school on your own and so on. If you successfully accomplish a project yourself, employers consider you better than the person graduating with dual degrees with no hands on project.
I agree, knowledge of Mathematics is very crucial in CS especially in the data structure portion. Writing an elegant and robust code is all about coming up with better algorithm, where Maths help alot.If you are already good in Maths, and if you are trying to do minor/major in Maths just to impress employers then I don;t think it will worth your time and money.
This is just my 2 cents. Do more research and make a wise decision :)

@shantigrg: I would suggest get something related to business. I am quite reluctant in doing any business study, like you said nepal dekhi +2, SLC did science. But here in the states they value you more if you have managerial type of skills. If you are just a developer all you will do is code all day, with business minor, you may be a manager, or leading a team of developers.

My opinion is do the Major, forget about the Minor and go for the MBA right away. So far I have seen and also from my own experiences at work it is better to have MBA. Any technical background with MBA, its a killer. Recently, law school is offering joint J.D and MBA programs. Wow! What a combination.

some colleges require you to have a minor in addition to ur major degree. a math minor is a nice complement to ur IT/CS degree.

ppl have also taken graphical design as minor, which isnt all that bad if ure into webdesign as you will get a lot of ideas for playing with the aesthetics.

and yes, like sis says MBA is a good combination with technical skills. but then if ur degree requires a minor go for math imho. u wont regret it. just dont minor in something that wont help ur major...like horseriding or something :P.

Let me vote for statistics/probability again. You would be hardpressed to find a field where statistics is not needed in your computer science career.

Usually people go for MBA at a competitive B-school after a few years of work in the real world. The thread initiator says she is a junior. That advice won't even apply to her for now.

Mathematics is a killer combination for Computer Science major if not for Computer Information System major. By picking math minor/major, your computer engineering background will be set on even stronger foundations. Until now all these look great on blogs or papers.

The real road-blocks become visible when it comes to implementing it. By that I mean, if you happen to be working 25 to 30-plus hours weekly just to raise tuition fee and living expenses, don't even think about math and computer science unless you have enough passion to replace other hobbies or activities with math-problem solving and computer programming.

Undergraduate business major/minor is good too, if you happen to be a very articulate people person,  have  great communication skills, and see yourself working in business. Still, Bill Gates did not have to  attend any Business or MBA program to become the wealthiest business person on the planet.

If you have plan to work for a few years in a particular area of your major right after you receive your bachelor's degree, in that case it might be more  lucrative to replace your minor with courses that will actually strengthen your marketability for an internship or an entry-level position.

You see it's not "a one size fits all" kind of thing. Every major is great if you know how to excel in it and you know exactly what to do with it. Picking an area of study should be driven by passion coupled with a clear vision and not by the kind of opinion the next person might make of you.

Mathematics is the foundation of Computer Science/Engineering. So if you are interested in Mathematics, go for it.

Almost everything related to cryptography, scheduling protocols, error correction codes, Network vectors/graphs, design and analysis of algorithms, logic circuits are based on simplistic to holistic mathematical foundations/concepts.

You cant go wrong with strong Mathematics background as a CS Major!
