I had same problem with IE 8 (I guess). When I went back to earlier version than this, the problem solved. Or you can try system restoring, which will take you back to the point where you could do everything that you wanted to do.
Or,
You can use Mozilla Firefox.
Hope this helps.

Hi guys, followup to the above question by 'dikush'. Is it possible to delete only selected addresses from the address bar. What I mean by that is, say you have 10 addresses in your address bar but you want to delet 4 of them only. Is it possibe? If it is, how to do that? Thanks.

just run disk cleanup from start>accesories>system tools>disk cleanup it will clean up everything (cookies, history)as well as boost the comp's speed a little....unless the pages you are seeing are your bookmarks

I don't really think disk cleanup is going to help. The disk cleanup tool build into microsoft is used to free up space on your harddisk by searching your disk for files that you can safely delete. You don't really want to do this in this case. You will be able to delete the cookies folders etc, but the history of the pages you visit is still going to be there when you use drop down window. There seem to be a bug with IE8 specailly if you are using beta version. You can read more about it here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/itprovistaie/thread/ecaff28f-e00f-4bab-801a-13d364ebad8d/ I hate anything to do with microsoft. I would suggest just get rid of IE and start using firefox or google chrome. They are superior than IE in every aspect.

I use mozilla fire fox as my web browser and on tools, I have selected Clear-recent-history option to delete history and coockies when I turn off the web. See if it is what you looking for?
