The translator is Greeta Rana --------WAKE OF THE WHITE TIGER---------- Naturally, on hearing that Somnath had already carried tales to the king about the Lasha dispute, Jagat Jung suspected him of having ulterior motives for doing so.On their part, the generals didn't pass any comments. "We don't have that many treaders in Tibet," came the Queen's comment from an inner chamber," so how on earth could they lose ten million rupees?" Jagat Jung was usually quick to retort, but this time he was too busy ruminating over the possible motives of Somnath to be as quick off the mark as usual. Quickly following up on the Queen's remark, the king commented,"According to Somnath our claim for ten million in damages isn't resonable coz we can't prove that we've suffered losses to amount to the sum even of five hundred thousand. "Yes,the more we think about what he has to say, it does rather make one wonder how our traders could have possibly lost ten million rupees in what amounts to a set of minor disturbances." More than ever convinced that Somnath was trying his hand at some sly political interference, Jagat tried to smooth things over and win the Royal Couple over to his point of view. "Your Majesty, in claiming this ten million rupees from the Tibetan Government, we are more concerned with the historical significance of the incident than in what our traders have lost." "What historical significance?" "Revered Majesty, it's a long story and by your leave, your Grace allow me the liberty of saying that we're evading the issue. We came here to discuss one thing and have ended up entangled in another." contd...................

I read this book a while ago. I just have some questions about this book. What is the criteria of trusting this book for its containt of historical events. I am not trying to disregard Mr. Daimond S.J. B. Ranas work in this book but have some ......... I am raising this question cuz i met someone with whom i have a chat regarding this book. BTW she is the great granddaughter of the gentleman and it is his memoir Mr. D. S.J.B. has written in the book, according to her.. There is another book also written by Shri Khrishna Shrestha regarding Kot Mascarre who, himself (as claimed by him) is a family tree of one of the person who worked at palace at the current time it occured.

"In the event of a war," the Queen reminded him gently, "many lives will be lost. During the last war with the British we suffered severe losses both in lives and in finances, don't forget. If this dispute can be settled amicably, there's no point in going to war. But come, tell us about the historical significance you mentioned" Just then the boom of cannons could be heared resounding across the parade ground. Twenty thousand troops were already assembled there in full battle kit, ready to leave the very next day for Tibet. Jung Bahadur was inspecting the troops and was being given a nineteen gun salute at the very moment that the fate of these self-same men hung in the balance. Jagat should have been at that parade, his presence was indispensable in presenting the rank and file with a unified family front and at the sound of the cannons he shifted around restlessly. "Come on Jagat, out with it," the King ordered and so Jagat had no alternative but to sit at the King's feet as bidden and the Generals followed suit. "Well," he began, "initially the Tibetans used to accept Nepalese currency for all normal business transactions, then during the period of Your Majesty's great-great grandfather, King Prithivi Narayan, a new nepalese currency was introduced which the Tibetans refused to accept, placing a great strain on the relationship between our two countries. A contingent of our army subsequently reached a place called Shikarjong and hoisted our flag and during the following months a peace treaty was signed, only to be broken by Tibet the very next year and once more our forces were obliged to fight their way in to Tibet. Our treaty with Tibet has always been favourable to us, but only because we have been prepared to defend it by force of arms if need be. contd..........

what swaati thapa pointed out is quite important... i have read both "Basanti" and "Seto Bagh" written by DSJBR and "Jungh Bahadur" by Shri Krishna Shrestha. SKS clearly says that Jung Bdr Rana killed Gagan Singh but DSJBR says that it was some one else (but doesnt say who he is).... Surely, i do respect DSJBR but i think he is trying to cover up the history for his family values.... (heard that he is C class rana though).... but a great novel to read....

Now once more the The Tibetan Government has broken the treaty between us with no provocation on our part and what is more they have allowed our citizens, who are there for peaceful trade, to suffer abuse on Tibetan soil. Unless we conquer Tibet once more and force them to accept the coin on which the revered head of Your Majesty is embossed we will lose our honour. We are Nepalese and can't tolerate subjugation, harassment and above all we will not tolerate disrespect of our Sovereign Lord. Your Majesty"s name must reign supreme. Be it as Your Majesty pleases." Although Somnath had already discouraged the King and Queen from going to war with Tibet, Jagat's stirring exhortation completely changed their minds. Their sons, Prince Trailokya and Narendra who had come into the room whilst Jagat was telling his story, were visibly moved by it. "Aye then, Jagat, we must conquer Tibet," the King announced, "But how ?" "By moving with all possible speed," Your Majesty, was Jagat's reply,"Generals Bom and Dhir must leave immediately. It is they who will command our troops and they must leave by early morning." Jagat and the two Generals rose to their feet. From the time of their ancestors this family had served in the Palace, their brother Jung had been a subaltern there and his wife had been the Queen's lady-in-waiting. The Queen had become very fond of her and the two ladies had once jokingly promised each other that their children would marry each other when they grew up. The Queen had hinted to the King about this promise on several occasions and secretly His Majesty was in favour of this arrangement. With the memory of this promise at the back of her mind, the queen followed His Majesty into the chamber where he was to conduct a farewell ceremony. "Bom Bahadur, are only you two brothers going?" the Queen asked. Bom and Dhir looked towards their nephew for approval. In the presence of the Prime Minister's son, other noblemen did not address themselves to the Royal Family members and Jagat himself came forward now with a reply. "Majesty, according to our campaign plans, Generals Bom Bahadur will attack Lhasa by way of Kerung pass with 10,000 men while General Dhir with an equal number of troops will march on Lhasa over Khasa." Bom Bahadur and Dhir came forward for the Royal Family blessing, the former tall and thin with streaks of grey already in his hair framing a face full of strength and determination. The Royal Family blessed the two in turn and the Generals were just on the point of leaving when Jung Bahadur arrived so their departure was delayed whilst they stood in attendance on their elder brother. "Any word yet about the Princess' marriage,"the King asked seeing Jung Bahadur. "Revered Lord, I've sent word to the King of Kashi but as yet have had no reply," Jung replied. The young crown prince Trailokya was astute and intelligent. The way his father had of easily diverting his attention to other topics when a serious discussion was being held, irritated him and he interrupted the conversation with a query of his own. "Jung, what arrangements have you made for our defence? When all our troops are mobilised for war against Tibet this place will be vulnerable to enemy attack. Have you thought about that?" "I have, Your Highness," Jung replied."General Bakhat is training 35,000 additional troops to reinforce our army in Tibet, if necessary, otherwise they'll be responsible for our defence." contidd...................

Sorry about the wrong price quote. It's actually $5 +$6 shipping together $11. So, total cost for book and shipping in US will be just $11.

Isn't Bakhat a member of your own family?" "He is, Your Highness." The Queen soft hearted as she was, began to weep because she beleived the fact that Jung Bahadur was sending his own brothers and nephews to was meant that it was indeed a serious issue. The King took her to one side and began to whisper to her gently, whilst everybody looked on silently. Jagat, who had work at the parade ground the next morning, was the first to leave and he went out of the chamber calling out ritualistically as he did so, "God Bless Our King. LOng live the King. May his enemies be vanquished and his fame spread far and wide." The silence took over the chamber once more, broken only by the intermittent whisperings of the King and Queen until suddenly the King turned to General Bom and asked, "How can we honour you?" but beforeBom could reply Jung Bahadur interjected, "Dhir Shumshere has a large family and he is facing financial problems but....it should be as Your Majesty wishes." Bom and Dhir had great respect for each other and were as one person in almost every way, sharing fortune and misfortune alike. What ever the King decided to give the one, he would always sharewith the other so there was no jealousy between them, therefore, Bom Bahadur had no hesitation in supporting Jung's statement. "Your Majesty, if you honour Dhir Shumshere, you will honour our entire family." The King turned to Dhir, "Sannani, are all your children small or are they of marriageable age. Haven't I seen Bir Shumshere quite a few times?" "He is lieutenant," JUng said. The King turned back to whisper once more with the Queen after which His Majesty said, "Dhir don't worry about your family. May god give you the strength you need to vanquish our enemies. When the war with Tibet is over,it is our wish to see a marriage solemnised between Bir Shumshere and the Princess Royal." Strange are the ways of Gods and Kings!!! Could it be that the Queen had made this decision because of her promise to Jung's wife. conti...
