Whenever someone asks about favourite footballer of all time it is quite natural that most of the person go for stikers. Because it is a strikers game and defender seldom gets praise that they deserve. But my favourite footballer is Paolo maldini and i am missing him in this world cup. I know people talk about Pele and maradona, but for me he is better than both. he was like a rock of gibraltor in front of post.and when time comes he is brilliant in scoring goal as well. Since i was child from small age when my dad introduced me to sports i have been hearing about him. He is a kind of person who is never in any controversy. he is a kind of role model every kid can emulate. apart from being superb footballer he si a good human being. When you see a person like maradona taking drugs and setting bad examples to kid paolo maldini always played game with ture spirit. I wil always miss him in the field. TRUE LEGEND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHO IS YOUR ALL TIME FAVOURITE FOOTBALLER.

Maldini is definitely a great defender. I think he was the Italian captain for a long time and his father was the Italian coach. As for me, during my childhood, I was quite impressed by the Argentine striker Claudio Cannigia and goalkeeper Sergio Goyokochea. I used to write no. 8 of Caniggia at the back of my jerseyl. :) It was Goyokochea who was the key person behind taking Argentina to the final of Italia '90.

one thing i forget to tell about maldini. through out his career he is a one club man AC milan. that shows he doesnot play for money and keeps changing the teams. my first view of maldini was in 1990 world cup. i cant remember against whom but there was an instance whree the goal keeper gell in the ground and only maldini stood between post and stiker and saved two confirm goals. one shot he stopped by foot , next shot a bullet he took it on the chest and shot away. Here is what wikepedia has to say about him: "the greatest defenders of all time, in fact at the peak of his career Maldini was considered by many as the undisputed greatest defender. Well known for his influential captaincy, ice-cool temperament and flawless defending. His clean tackling and ability to read the game makes him one of the best defenders in modern football"

thanks for the maldini video. all the tackles were awsome. who says only goals are good to watch. whenever you think of him you think of AC milan.best thing about maldini like del peiro is that he stayed with one club. he has been loyal to the club. thats what you want of players. all the stars like zidane, backhem, figo they keep on changing clubs.

Huna ta I m haven't read the life history of all the football players but I surely have read the biography of Pele... I think very little people have been able to accomplish what he has.

Talking about Maldini, EURO 2000 semi-final. The scene, Amsterdam arena, full house, the roaring of the Oranje Army and the best attacking team in the World the Dutch. Holland started well in the first half, but an Italian guy got a red card in the stroke of half an hour and from then on 11 dutch attackers against 10 Italian defenders. Italy went out on an all out defense and Holland attacked them vigorously. I have never seen any team defend like that in Amsterdam arena in front of full house 70,000 Oranje Army and it was Maldini the hero. He was there in front of defense, he fought like a soldier. Although that game, I first saw Nesta and his calibre, it was Malidini and there aren't words to describe the defense he played. I was shocked that the Dutch could not score even after half an hour of extra time with so much attack. They could not pierce the Italian defense. It was first when I fully admired Maldini, he was breathless when the game finished, he was cramping, but he sat there like a wall and fought for his country. After the game finished, I was so in admiration of the fella, eventhough I am a die-hard Dutch fan that I never really felt sympathy in my team for loosing in PSO for the first time. Then I came to realize why they say Italy have such powerful defense. It was Maldini and with him has come other young generation of the admirable Italian defense.

I also think that Maldini is one of the best defenders the sport has seen. He was great technically, he was passioante about football. he was great player, no doubt. He was a hardworking palyer. But without getting carried away too much, I just cant say he is the best player (to me). I doesnt have the charisma of Baggio, he doesnt have skill of Ronaldinho. He lacks the flair of maradona... he is not as natural as Zidane... When people compare Maldini with people like Pele, Maradona, Baggio, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho or Zidane, I feel its like the comparison between Rahul Dravid and Sachin in cricket. No matter how techincally sound Dravid is , people always like charisma, skill and natural talent of Sachin. Again, that said, its just a pesonal view. I also used to be die-hard fan of Maldini. But people like Pele, Maradona, Baggio, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho or Zidane are in a differnet class...
