Saroj, Thanks for putting forth the querry in a positve manner, unlike in the other thread. Probably less from you, but the loathesome approach laden with sinister motives of some of the other posters compelled me to avoid responding there. To tell you the truth, I have been taking a temporay respite from the hectic life of activism, primarily to focus on few other urgent matters as I begin to finalize my plans to return home. I figured I could use the political energy in me much more effectively in Nepal itself, hence the careful and well-thought-over restraint on engaging in futile and frustrating discussions here. I will avoid a lengthy discussion now too, but in short: No, I am not happy with the SPECIFICS of some of the things that has been happening in Nepal; however, I still believe in the OVERALL larger picture of free and democratic Nepal. First, the movement was ended incomplete. Second, I never expect things to be fine and dandy as soon as a new system is in place. Frankly, I expect things to get worse before it gets better. Bottomline is, ever since I realize a greater political awareness, I always did -- and I always will, vouch for a Republic. All the negative things we see now -- sheer ineptitude of the political leaders, "manparitantra" of the Maoists, etc., I believe, has roots in the psychology of the oppressed. Decades of oppression, made firm by the existence of the monarchy in Nepal, I still believe, has made us who we are today, insecure, patronizing, power-mongering...you name it. So, again, no, I am not happy with the things as they stand now, but I still wholeheartedly believe that the solution lies in more democracy, not less. Specifics makes me cringe, but I am happy with the SYSTEM, and would be happier if it was strenthened. Down with powers vested upon the individuals by virtue of their birth, caste, family roots, cheers to further empowerment of the people as a whole. What we must still fight against is the real SAMANTABAAD, not only what many have perceived it to be -- Narayanhiti -- but also Samantabaad in the society as a whole. The Slave mentality must end, and it can only be ended by further empowerment of the people, i.e., we must never lose faith the SYSTEM of democracy, however small and full of problems it might seem. We must espouse to make it fuller and complete.

Poonte thanks for your response. I don't blame you or anyone for having hope for a bigger democratic picture for Nepal. But your view of politics seems to have been blinded by your hatred for Monarchy. During the Maoist SPA movement, people like you supported the Maoists along with the SPA to make Nepali politics more democratic. Lots of people like you made the pact with the devil hoping that things will be better. There are few things inherently different between the Maoist and the King's autocratic rule. During the Kings rule there were fewer cases of extortion simply because these extortions and undemocratic practices were coming from the King/royal family influence. On one hand we had the King and his aides and his family and extended family and friends who were involved in undemocratic practices, and on the other hand we had the Maoists who were ARMED and DANGEROUS. Who killed people mercilessly according to their whims. Who forcibly recruited children from schools to join their army. We are not talking about a family and thier extended associates. We are now talking about a whole bunch of armed rebels who are following the extinct beliefs of communism that have failed everywhere else. And now the situation in Nepal is going from bad to worse, with more percentage of people being affected adversely by maoist exploitation than during the King's rule. The country is losing it's control with two parallel governments running the country in the cities and in the villages. The government not able to control the Maoist. Does it look like things are going in the right direction? How can people expect to gamble with the future of the country by supporting the Maoist/SPA movement HOPING that things will get better? All the other supporters of Maoist and SPA are now keeping their mouths shut because they tried hard to sell their assumptions and theories about how things will get better, and everyday they know that things are getting even worse much worse than before. Do you think the country will be in the right direction when the Maoists begin to control the whole government? Would you still believe in the democracy that you hoped for?
