Gas Station Safety Tips
Here are a few safety tips for friends who work at gas stations:
1) Give away: If someone enters the store and demands cash (or whatever), give it away. Help the robber take as much as he can. Don't even think about what the owner will say. Nothing is more important than your life.
2) Don't talk back: If the robber says something bad to you, don't talk back. You say anything bad and he will pay you in hot bullets.
3) Respect the robber: One sure way to get shot is to disrespect the robber. Show all the respect you can in order to save your life.
4) Don't look at the robber: As soon as you realize that robbery has taken place, try to avoid looking straight at the robber's face. If you look at him, he thinks that you are trying to identify him and will report to the police. Only thing he can do to silence you, then, is to gun you down.
5) Tell him explicitly that:
i) you are not looking at him
ii) he can take whatever he wants
iii) not to harm you
iv) you will fully cooperate with him
v) where all the cash is
6) Be calm: Don't lose self control. If you do, you will even forget the simplest way to open the register when he asks you to. Not everyone that gets robbed gets shot. You couldn't control the robber from coming in, at least, you can control how you react to his demands.
7) Raise your both hands: Let him know that you don't have any weapon. Let him know that you don't have intention to reach for one. Let him know that you are totally harmless to him.
8) Don't play Smart: Be normal. Don't play smart @$$ or do something stupid. Don't play super dumb either. Just be yourself. Try hard to think clearly.
9) Have two clerks: If it's a dangerous place, request your owner/manager to hire another clerk to work with you.
10) Select a day shift: Night shifts are more dangerous. Robber will get more cash hitting at 11:00 compared to at 6:00. If you can, try to work during day time. If you are unlucky, you may get robbed anytime of the day.
11) Lights and cameras: Keep all the lights on inside and outside the store. Let all the camera rolling.
12) Report the incident: If you get robbed without getting hurt, report the incident to the police. Provide all the details including the camera tapes.
13) Be friendly: Keep yourself from being enemies of the people (especially the ones you think are in drugs---the brilo pad buying ones) that come to the store. Actually make your clients your friends. They can help, or at least they don't hurt you.
14) Look for safer jobs: In the mean time, try to find a safer job.
These are some tips I can think of at the moment. I request you all to add more to the list.
Hope this helps.
