Yesterday evening had a small argument among our friends. We were talking about Medical doctors n Ph D doctors. There were 2 Medical docs, and 3 who have damaged heads (Ph D- Permanent Head Damage).

Ph Ds were claiming-
They are much better than Medical Docs becoz t
- They have studied longer
- Getting Ph D is not a joke
- Know more than Medical Docs
- spent almost 10 years continuously after higher education (+2)
- Have to sacrifice many things (lucrative job offer after Masters, travel frequently for presentation and other family commitment)
-PhD DRs r more respected than Medical DRs
-

Medical Doctors argued in this way
-Almost everyone who do Ph D once tried for Medical Doc and Failed
- They study more than Ph Ds  (10 years after +2) in just 4 years.
- Every Medical Doc is easily fit in job market.
- You need more patience and must put more hard work to be medical doc.
- Everyone can be a Ph D Doc, but Everyone cannot be a Medical Doc.
-Ph D's main intention is only to put DR in front of their names whereas Medicals are determined to save others Life.

----------------
*Medical Docs = Who have not done Ph D in specific field such as MBBS/BDS/MS/MD etc
Ph D Docs = Who have done Ph Ds in any other sub than Medical (Engg, Arts, Social Sciences, Comptrs etc )

Amazing, your question as to who's more educated/important and the whole ego trip thing reminded me of the joke below someone forwarded me.  Happy reading bro:

THE BODY PARTS MEETING

One day the different parts of the body were having an argument to see which should be in charge:

The brain said "I do all the thinking so I'm the most important and I should be in charge."

The eyes said "I see everything and let the rest of you know where we are, so I'm the most important and I should be in charge."

The hands said: "Without me we wouldn't be able to pick anything up or move anything. So I'm the most important and I should be in charge."

The stomach said: "I turn the food we eat into energy for the rest of you. Without me, we'd starve. So I'm the most important and I should be in charge."

The legs said: "Without me we wouldn't be able to move anywhere. I'm the most important and I should be in charge."

Then the ass-hole said: "I think I should be in charge." All the rest of the parts said: YOU?!! You don't do anything! You're not as important as we are, surely! You can't be in charge!"

So the ass-hole closed up... After a few days, the legs were all wobbly, the stomach was all queasy, the hands were all shaky, the eyes were all watery, and the brain was all cloudy. They all agreed that they couldn't take any more of this and agreed to put the rectum in charge.

The moral of the story? You don't have to be the most important to be in charge.... just an asshole!

Strictly speaking, MD's are mere technicians, especially surgeons. MDs know the symptoms of the diseases and know what medicines to give, which by the way are discovered mostly not by the MDs but by PH. Ds.

PH. D.s are policy makers, thinkers, researchers, scholars, social engineers, teachers, and philosophers. There is no PH.D degree without research and without research a PH.D. can not survive in his/her occupation. Higher education depends heavily on PH.Ds. Their function to society is multi-faceted unlike the MD's unidimensional.

hahaha Samsara, that's classic........

By the way Amazing, I guess, those of your friends who were arguing in this debate for phD must be phD students, right? If you were involved in the discussion, you must be supporting to Medical Docs, right?

The best answer of this question can be given by a medical doctor who holds phD. Ask him what made him more proud, having a undergrad medical Doc or a phD, he has both experience and can tell you better answer.

This discussion is shedding some twilight onto my somewhat faded childhood memories.

We used to argue amongst ourselves (other kids) which among the superheroes was the most powerful out of the few ones we knew like Superman, Spiderman, Batman, Robin, the Flash etc. But in the end, each of them beat the bad guys who pose threat to the society.

I will leave you with this quote to ponder upon though:
"Every man I meet is in some way my superior. "
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

comparing a medical doctor of one specific field "human health science" against PHDs in thousands of subjects and categories explain itself who is superior and which is more difficult to achieve.

Intresting!!!
To be a Med DOC all you gotta do is pass all your classes, yes get just P. Lot of schools have pass-fail grade, so all you gotta do is get P and you good to do. What do you call a person who gets all P's in his classes - Doctor. But, amount of work you gotta put into it is crazy.they have to learn years of biochemistry in 1 semster, that is a lot. Thus, all they do is study. First, two years is all studying. Whereas, Phd people, they do study, but they got more free time. They get paid less, unless you make a discovery and win Nobel prize and land a prof. job in Harvard.

What about a guy with PHD in BioChemistry then... that's all he studies for 4-5 years right?

money and education are two different things.  A person working in an investment bank with an undergrad degree might earn way more than a guy with phd degree in sciences with job such as research associates.  Many post docs get paid less than 40 K per year.

ok guy. I am MD and PHD. All PHD people are not smart speciall sometimes in engineering just they take PHD with small project and course work.leaving these ordinary folks holding PHD ( they can be equivalent to MD) all other PHDs are intectually superior than MD.yu can just complete your MD with textbooks . Whats the big deal? They are highly regared because of the amount of money they make compared to other common jobs anfd directly involved in public health. Yes I respect MDs as profession but can't be compared with PHDs.

.Exactly Shirish Dai,

It takes hardwork and lots of dedication to complete any studies, be it PhD or Medical Docs, or anything else. It's childish to discuss and say 'we are better'. Education does not only develop our knowledge about the specific subject, it also brings in us the ability to know who others are and how to respect them. For me, whoever were discussing about it are not ready to graduate as of yet. Atleast not till they learn to respect other fields. I think they should rather be appreciating other fields and their contribution to the community.

Like mR hydE wrote, it is like those childhood days when we used to compare Superman, Batman, Spiderman etc and somebody would come with "no no! My grandmom told Hanuman is the best!"

Bachelor in medicine  bachelor   in surgery

Ms. C.T. Harmison,
Physician, MBBS,MD
लेख्छन, अनी पी एच् डि गरेका ल्ले भने डाक्टर र स्पेष्लिस्ट भनेर लेख्ने गर्छन्।

Interesting thread Amazing bro! It prompted me to look into what actually the word "Doctor" meant because as someone has pointed it out, the subject comes up time and again even among our friends. The word interestingly was/is used for many meanings. Interested folks can follow the link.

them people who were arguing over this topic don't know the fundamental difference between a Phd and an MD degree. Although both are 'doctorate' degrees; doctorate itself, for the purpose it's used, can or cannot be the highest degree in the field.

Phd (Doctorate of Philosophy) is a Research Doctorate Degree -- a license to teach and conduct scholarly research and is the pinnacle of the degrees one can earn in his/her field. It requires a creation of an original idea on top of the body of knowledge in the field.

MD (Doctor of Medicine) is a Professional Doctorate Degree -- gives you the license only to practice medical profession and NOT for teaching and research. It is NOT the terminal degree and hence NOT equivalent to a Phd. Other degrees, equivalent to MD, are Professional Doctorate in Engineering, PDEng (in Holland) or the Doctor of Jurisprudence(JD) in the US for that matter.

-------------

Different countries/Universities have different names for a degree. Don't get confused or overwhelmed by the Salutation (Dr.) Even a charlatan can call himself Dr. (or Daaktar Saap) hahaha. It's just used to refer/address to the person in a society. For professional purpose, people go by appending their degree at the end of their name and which is how it should be IMO. Like

"XYZ", Phd
"ABC", MD
"123", MD, Phd

what's in a name, anyways?

NO comparision everyone can not do PhD but to be a medical doctor you just need to read books. If chances were given everyone can read those books.
