Hi, one of my friends, who has an F-1 status until now, is married and wants to change her status into an F-2 until her husband completes his graduate studies. Those of you who have experience please kindly give good tips and also send your email address where she and her husband could further contact you. Thanks in advance for your time! [you can send your email to sharmasakuntala@yahoo.com] Best wishes, Sakuntala

Hope, she is doing consultancy in US. I think better to open a site, where you can help on that ground in NY. It would be fine. Thanks

Dear Gaine & Everest2,Many many thanks for your curiosities and questions. I am doing the graduate studies (completing doctorate) and not doing any consultancy work (thank you for your suggestion, though, and I will have to begin it if I do not get a position at the university!). As for me, I am already married and have kids! As you can guess, friends around sometimes do not know what to do. In the earlier cases you referred to, I sincerely advised them to post a thread on sajha.com (Kurakani section), but one person whose wife was struggling for the TOEFL back home did not even know how to operate the computer and another one was too shy to write her case. So, Dear Gaine & Everest2, my apologies for any inconvenience. Please post your suggestions if you have anything substantial to say. I thank you for your time. Sakuntala

Gaine, I shared information with Everest2 and got the required information from him. It looks like the problem is now resolved. Best, Sakuntala

i think it's better to contact with International office of university. They will guide detail about the process and it will take around 2-3 months.

You can change your status to F1- f2 easily but you need the required documentatation. First of all you need to go to the consular and put the wife's name in i-20 and there is a list of documentation which you need ... the advisor or international advisor will provide during the consultation. You also need bank statment showing of F1 showing that the amount would be sufficient for 2 people. The process will take somewhere between 4 -6 months
