I did some research to find out the Nepalese population in the US. However, could not really find a dependable source of information on this. The US Census Bureau has put Nepalese in "Other Asia" category. Does anybody know any source of information regarding the Nepalese population in the US? A discrete listing of legal and undocumented would be even better. Thanks.

In my city of a little over 100,000 people we have 15 Nepalis of Nepali origin that we know of.  In the temple I go to I have counted 28 Nepalis of various origin at one congregation.  My friends and family approximately 350, their friends and family
approximately 350 each, so my estimate around 100,000 - 125,000 Nepalis
in all, not counting Nepalis of Indian/Bhutanis/Brumese origin and
Indian/Bhutanis/Burmese of Nepalis origin, and I am leaving Nepalis of American origin and Americans of Nepalis origin out of the discussion for now.

10 years and before, the name of USA was like going to the moon. There was so much pride and respect of coming to the United States. But such feeling has disappeared because nowadays you see many people having come to the US by luck, chance you name it.
I think the only country that holds so much prestige now is Canada and Japan.

But i can assure you that Nepalese population though i have no idea, i estimate to be between 50K-60K mainly thanks to DV.

There are millions of Mexicans who don't even know how to speak in English and live in America illigally. So, what's wrong with Nepali who came to this land of opportunity winning DV lottery?

By the way, there may be more than 1 lakh Nepali in America.

Its not important how you come to america, either DV or other visas. But the thing that surprises me is that we don't have identity here.Given the number of Nepalese in USA, I think we should have got recognition from others. I find it strange when other people don't even know that country called Nepal exists( some do know about it but are very few in number). Is it because Nepalese here haven't been able to do something recongnizable? Or is it because they keep themselves away from other people?

1st generation older Nepali in America = Nepali

1st generation younger Nepali in America = Nepali + American = Neprican who usually don't associate with fresh off boat Nepalis.

2nd generation Nepali in America = American who act like they have nothing to do with Nepali

1st, 2nd, 3rd generation Indian = still Indian for the most part.

An article on Wikipedia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nepalese_American> suggests the number of Nepalese Americans as one million. I think they have counted all Nepalese in the US regardless their temporary or permanent status. And they have counted half-Nepalese as well, for example - Kiran Chetry. If that's the case, then I believe this number must be pretty accurate.

I think the number might be more than 1 lakh. I remember a circle of Nepalese social gathering that included a member of ANA was saying the number is close to 11 lakh back in 2005/2006. I assume its much more now maybe close to 2 lakhs due to DV, students, dependents and such.

I somewhat agree with Kandebhyakur. Last time I met a Chinese lady in NYC and she said she doesn't know Nepal, I was little surprised to know a Chinese not knowing Nepal as a country!!
