I am a regular visitors of sajha and have come across numerous instances of help and suggestions on this website and this is my first time posting a question on this website... I am currently on OPT and it expires in July 2011. i am planning to go back to school after my OPT considering the job market right now and I am not eligible for STEM extension To maintain status when should I start grad school? summer itself or do i wait till fall? If I get the I20 for grad school by July can I start in fall ? I contacted my International advisor regarding this and he hasnt responded yet ...maybe he's checking the USCIS website about this too.....

Miss Anita, The last thing you want to do is fall prey to con-women like Niniti who simply do not care about your status and career as long as they rake moolah. Might be a tough call, but how about this? A friend of mine who was a social science major completed her undergrad first and accelerated her masters following which she was accepted by a noteworthy university in Midwest for her phd. Three more years to complete her doctorate and she is hired to do post doc in the same university. Her Green card was approved within three months after she enrolled for post doc. Bottomline is, it took her four and half years to complete her masters and phd to find a post doc job with a green card. I bet it is worth a gamble than asswiping people like Niniti who send you to Alaska in the Month of January only to transfer you to Flagstaff next July.

You should not have any problem in starting your Fall Semester in September 2011 since you are within 60 days grace period of OPT expiration (July 2011). Good luck on getting into employment and STEM extension.

I hope this answers your question... What are my options after OPT? You have three options after OPT. - Leave the US within your 60-day grace period
- While on OPT, apply for a new program of study. You must know
that you have been accepted before your 60-day grace period is over. Your new program must start within 5 months of the OPT expiration date. - Apply for a change of visa status. You must apply and receive
approval before the 60-day grace period is over. A change of status takes an average of 4 months (usually within 2-6 months) to adjudicate.
