I am going to Nepal next week via JFk-HKG-KTM. When I booked the ticket I asked the travel agency if I need transit visa (since I heard somewhere I need one) if I travel via Hongkong and they said I dont need one. Thinking they would more resourceful and knowledgeable than I am since it is there job I booked the ticket trusting them. But recently I came across the folloeing website which is Hongkong Immigration department website that says I need one

http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkvisas_4.htm#note%20for%20visa%20req

Does anyone has experience travelling via Hongkong recently.

Well, as far as I  know if you are flying through Cathay Pacific and you are Nepali citizen, then you don't need transit visa, since CX has some agreement with HKG government.

If you are connecting on KA from CX, you should not need one.  If you are using any other airline, then you need a visa.  I think, if you are connecting on RA, you are exempt for a single transit even though you may have an RT ticket.  That means, if you are flying RA, you need  a visa for either the outbound or return trip.  You may, however, want to check with the airline to be sure.

I'm travelling the same route in a few days. They told me the same thing - no transit visa required if you're flying with Cathay/Dragon and stay in the airport. But since I have a layover during daytime, I'm thinking about getting visa so that I can travel around HK.
Don't worry man, you'll be fine.

i would recommend printing this doc and taking with you to the airport. i have seen an airport agent giving unnecessarly hassle to a Nepali because that agent was unaware.

btw, is there any way we can apply the transit visa at the airport to take a tour of the city?

i don't think you can apply at the airport. you need visa before you arrive at HK. get it before you leave, costs 30 bucks and takes 3-4 days. i'm thinking about applying but not quite sure. when are y'all flying?
