Hello Friends, I came here on F2 visa as dependent one year ago and I am now planning to start my studies. I want to first obtain an associate degree from a local community college. Will I be allowed to work after i obtain my associate degree?, or Do i need to complete my 4 years college before i can look for jobs?, or getting the associate degree not a good idea? Kindly share your suggestions. Thank you

You'll get an OPT after completing your associate degree. You can work for a year with that. Getting AA degree is the way to go unless you managed to secure decent scholarships (most top tier colleges do) or got into a school that offers in-state tuition (relatively affordable compared to private schools).

My understanding is that you have to change to F1 status to apply for OPT. I don't think F2 are authorize to work in US, just like H4 which are both dependent Visas category. Things might change in the coming days. I would rather change the status to F1 and be in independent status and join the college, maybe some less expensive community colleges. Get Ass. degree and apply OPT and work for year, and in the meantime apply for 4 years college with ass. degree. The changes of getting scholarship with Ass. degree is higher than normal transfer. You don't need a good GPA. Hope this helps...
