People followed the maoists blindly because they were blinded by hope. There are still people who are pedalling their degrees they learn in college about democracy. But what they miss is that democracy is not possible without an educated population.

I don't believe that the mass has to be well educated for democracy to flourish. You can always smart people up with good leaders. The problem in Nepal as I see is not the literacy rate of people or rather lack of. It is the short-sightedness and lack of sense of belonging, accountability and of duty towards the country.

Let's say there are 100 sheep on a grazing field and 5 shepherds responsible of bringing 25 sheep each back in the farm every evening. The these 5 shepherds are well organized, disciplined and know very well their responsibility, the task will become very simple. But if these 5 shepherds don't get along at all, don't communicate with each other very well and can't stand each other, bringing the sheep back in the farm from the grazing field will be a struggle. Each one will want to have his herd in first, will do anything to achieve this and will eventually create a mess and chaos on the field.
And that is the situation of nepalese leaders. So the problem is not democracy.

Hurray

Your example assumes that the sheeps are uneducated and they will follow the shepherds blindly so that is why your example fails in the context of educated people for democracy.

The problem is that even after knowing how corrupted and unreliable the leaders are, the people are still following those leaders. If the people were educated then they would not follow these incompetent leaders

Shahi baba, I understand what you are saying and I do share the same feeling about the nepalese people who are following their leaders. But I do not agree that it is due to lack of education. For me this is more due to lack of wanting to sacrifice for someone else. In general and in my opinion, nepalese people have long stopped to think about their country and the future generations. They think first for themselves and the rest is "herdai jaula". This is why most of them identify themselves with a certain political party to reap benefits from it. In today's context, a nepali should think beyond his political alliance. The future of the country is being made at present and this is a very decisive situation.
But you cannot blame all this to the lack of education. Majority of indians were not educated when India gained it's independence, yet democracy flourished just fine. India had good leaders with vision when british left them.
Now take France and french revolution as an example. Most of the french were peasants when they took up arms and beheaded their king and royalists. But the men leading the revolution or the ones that appeared later to build the country and take it to the new direction were educated, had vision, knew what they wanted and what they did not.

I understand and like you wonder why nepalese just keep following their incompetent leaders. But the truth is, most of the educated nepalese have left Nepal and the from the ones that are left, there isn't one willing to sacrifice or devote his life to the country. I had many bhutanese friends in the US and almost all of them went back home once they were done with their studies. They had love for their country that we nepalese don't have towards ours. Just because one loves dal-bhat, loves nepalese folk songs, sports dhaka-topi once in a while does not make him partiotic. There are very few nepalese that have gone back to do something to the society and Nepal. I am not talking about those who go back to pick up a managerial job in a Bank with his MBA degree or the ones who go to handle their dad's business.

My neighbour who is a retired british is going to Nepal in few months with a team of 20 social workers to show and help nepalese villagers build wells. Seriously, is this something we neplaese cannot do by ourselves? Does everything in our country need to be done by foreigners? Are we that hopeless?

Hurray you agree that most of the educated Nepalese have left Nepal so what is left is mostly uneducated. Lack of education is one of the main reason why democracy has been raped and plundered by the politicians.

That is why the maoist movement was started from the villages. They gathered uneducated people with fear and lies and gave them guns to spread more fear and lies. The mass of uneducated people following cunning leaders have almost destroyed our country.
