This is a sensitive issue and i would urge fellow sajha to please be little sensitive and comment appropriately.

We are a GC holder here in US and we are thinking about adopting a child from Nepal.

Has any one of you been through this process and just wanted to know what are the challenges faced by you. How long do you think will we be able to bring him/her from Nepal if we start the processing by end of next month.

Before 2010, it was ok adopting child from Nepal, but due to selling of infants, they pretty much banned it. However, it seems like they are reviewing their stance now. Good luck

Unicorn is right. It is very difficult these days legally to adopt from Nepal, unless you smuggle them. Some sinful people ruined lot of children's future for Nepal. I would adopt from Nepal in a heart beat if things were faster and easier.
I think you still can, but it will take a long time. Many years ago when things were good in Nepal, few of my friends (white families) adopted from Nepal, 3 family adopted 5 kids. They told me it took them 5-7 years to complete everything. If I am not wrong, I remember them saying it cost them around 50K in those days.
But now with the stories of child selling, it will be even longer I assume.
Adoption is a very lengthy process. The easiest ones are from Africa. I know a family right now in line for 2 years to adopt a baby from Ethopia. They "might" get the baby girl this year, but again, things can go wrong anytime in Africa. They tried once from Congo but it fell through.

If you don't have that much time, I would recommend adopting right here in America, it will be lot faster. Don't be too picky on the race/gender of the child, then you have a high chances. It will still cost you form 15K-25K in total.
How do I know this? I tried once but had to cancel my plan for a while. I might start the process again soon. I will be adopting a child right here in the USA.

A GC can only bring their adopted child to the USA if the child was adopted before the adoptive parents applied for their GC. Also he should have been adopted before his 16 birtday and lived with them for 2 years. So u cannot adopt anyone from anywhere including Nepal if u don't meet the above criteria.
But if you were to wait until you become a US citizen you could adopt and bring a child from Nepal. There will be restrictions but it can be done. You will need a lawyer in Nepal as well as in the US

I agree with itroll, you have to be a citizen to adopt. My above suggestions were based on you being a citizen of America. I missed that you were a GC holder. Sorry.

Its heartening to know that there are fellow sajha looking for adoption from Nepal.

Does it mean that GC holders aren't allowed to adopt? Do i have to wait for Citizenship to start the adoption process ? I dont know about adopting from US. Sorry for being conservative... but We are looking for a nepali child to adopt. Dont know how easy is to find him/her.If nothing else then we may go that route too...

You heard it correct, adopting the child from Nepal is a definite No-no since that kid had not lived with u for minimum of 2 years. Even Nepal has put on hold any adoption due to potential misuse in the wake of earthquake.
Adopting A kid from US id the easiest provided you pass you background checks and interview from the agency.

I think your missing the point here. You can adopt a child anywhere. But will you be able to bring him to the USA is the real question.
Steps
1.You need to abide by the laws of Nepal to adopt a child. (Go through Nepals child services for approved agencies).
2. Now you want to bring your adopted child to USA . Will the US recognize the child u adopted in Nepal fit to be processed for immigrating to US.
3. Let's say the child is fit to be adopted. Does your status affect his immigration processing? If you're a CITIZEN OR GC

The ministry of Nepal / child services will allow you to adopt through its agencies. The government of Nepal doesn't allow street children's to be adopted overseas. But it will allow children's abandoned in hospitals to be adopted overseas.
But the U.S. won't allow children's abandoned in hospitals to be bought to USA, but it will allow street children's to be adopted. (The link by unicorn states that).

Now your best bet is to,adopt children's whose family are dead (but through agencies approve by Nepal govt). Let's say u adopted such child .

since you're a GREEN CARD , THE CHILDE SHOULD HAVE BEEN adopted by u before his 16th b'day and he/she lived with u for 2 years.
But if you're a citizen/wait till u become one then you dint need to worry about the 16th b'day rule.
Also u can adopt a child whose parents are dead (without the objection of NEPAL & US GOVERNMET)

We are a GC holder here in US and we are thinking about adopting a child from Nepal. We have a son and want to adopt daughter from Nepal (around 3-4 year). Being a green card holder adopting from Nepal for a Nepali citizen considered domestic adoption. I recently talked to one lawyer from Nepal and he mentioned that it would not be hard for Nepali citizen to do that.

How do I get the record of the kids who became orphan from earthquake.
What is the definition of the orphan under immigration laws of USA
How do I get the child to USA?
Where can I find the information about American lawyer who specializes in domestic adoption and bringing to USA?
