What he said is not technically wrong, although the way he said it is condescending. Certainly one wouldn't hope this from a spiritual leader. Ideally Buddha wasn't a Nepali or Indian. He certainly wasn't from Brihat Bharat as the claim is made. He is from a princely state Lumbini that now belongs to Nepal. But it's an accepted norm to call it Nepal, as if you try to get technical then none of the historical figure might belong to the country of origin they are associated to as countries change boundary all the time. Gandhi wasn't born in India as before British took over, there really wasn't the current India. They had different states, not just the current India.

Siddharth was born in lumbini ... Gautam Buddha was born in India. Nepal didn't exist then. Nepal was unified by prithwi Narayan. Before then it was called "greater India " or "bhaarat barsha" with 100s of small states and territories (lumbini was one of them ). Swasni chodera bhaageko Nepal bata (bhaguwa) , gyani saint Bhako chai India ma ....so I don't really care

Are you guys kidding ? Dalai Lama has long considered himself a son of India. He says, both intellectually and physically he sees himself as an Indian. Looks like some people found about it only now. Watch and listen to this video at 11:11 minute mark. https://youtu.be/1liSfxaqQ_A?t=11m11s

No matter what Dalai Lama or anybody else says, it is fair to say Gautam Buddha was born in Lumbini which actually lies in present day Nepal. Another solid fact : the vital inquisitive seed of Buddhism was sowed into Gautam Buddha's heart and mind when he disturbingly witnessed the old, the sick, and the dead outside the Tilaurakot palace (fort) gates of Kapilvastu (Nepal), a case so akin to that of Newton and the Apple. Therefore for the record, Buddha was born in Nepal.
These days Dalai Lama is just a media darling. Also, another fact is he neither holds any authority over Buddhism nor does he bear any relevance to true Buddhist practioners or Buddhist scholars. Why even deal with this middle-man, right? He is a religious plus political leader for the people of Tibet not for the people of Nepal or other Buddhists. He and his people owe a lot to India, the US, and even Nepal for all the critical humanitarian favors they have received since 1959.
Some more background: India is a democracy of contrasts. The self-proclaimed largest democratic country has politics and religion shamefully intertwined. In fact, the country still has a national daily newspaper called the Hindu and has been in publication since 1878. It is anyone's guess about how that media powerhouse house of that stature would not have any direct conflict of interest against the other minority groups such as Christians, Muslims, and others. The RSS (a violent right-wing Hindu extremist group) and the BJP (the Hindu majority party in the government) can be in bed together and still face no consequences from their democratic form of Government. Go ahead and even look up the curious and ridiculous prevalence of an Indian Hindu monk, a Hindu nationalist politician, and a Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, all rolled into one who bears the name Mr. Yogi Adityanath on his driver's license.
When the culture, society, and government is such that it is perfectly okay to mix politics, religion, and social norms whether in India or in pre-1959 Tibet, Dalai's speech actually is nothing new. To put it mildly, it is sad and unfortunate to see the Dalai Lama making a fool of himself with or without some coercion by his host India.
I thought the following video response was quite strong too:

Does it really matter where Buddha was born? I thought his teachings were more important than himself, which is also one of his teachings. In fact, Nepal and nepalese do not deserve Buddha. A land of meat eaters, where baby goats are slaughtered by jugular slice, in the most horrific way has not learnt a single lesson about non-violence from Buddha. More than 30% of indian hindus are vegeterians compared to barely 5% of nepalese. Jains have deep conviction over non-violence. Nepalese are worried that with a statement like Buddha was an indian or Buddha was born in India, India will take away all related tourists and their cash, leaving Nepalese hands' empty. It is not that Nepalese take pride in and practice Buddha's teachings. For most nepalese. Lumbini is just a visiting site.
