Go for XP Bro, it is better. Just insert your XP cd and format your harddrive by following the instruction. Going XP is the way now and may be next year Vista way ???

So, u want to get rid of XP and want to have 98 ha? hahahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahahhaha yes there is a way :) Let me ask u something- kutiekrazy!! Did u had XP or 98 when u bought ur computer? If u had 98 when u bought ur new pc then read the following instrution; if not then just borrow or buy xp cd. sorrie :( anywayz, if u had 98 when u bought ur new computer --> If you hav a dell, sony, emachines, toshiba and other popluar brand then u gotta to hav the re-instalation cd!!! which comes when u buy the computer. For eg. I hav Sony viao. And i got a re-installation cd when i bought my computer. and i guess you probally know wat i does. If not, then read the following sentence :) If u install from that cd, it just makes ur computer; a brand new computer from inside :). So, it just deletes everything; EVERYTHING; and installs the needed sotwares; and OS. So, if u had 98 when u bought ur computer; and later on ur added XP. then it doesnt matter. Just get that CD which i hope u saved it somewhere; and install it. and u will hav 98. I hope u understood. If u hav the that re-installation CD with u; then read the followin sentence :) So, now take the cd; and turn off ur computer. THen, turn on ur computer. as the computer's switch in on then pop in the cd. After that when u pop in the CD, then its not suppose to take u to Log-In screen. As u put the cd in; it will ask if u wana reboot; or start from ur computer. And it will show some warning; saying u will lose everything. *which i hope u dont care; like u said in ur earlier post* So,Type "Y", cuz it will be in msdos system. then, it will re-install ur computer. Then, it will restart; and it will ask u everything like: time, user and everything when u 1st borugh ur computer. Done| I hope u understood. :) So, i repeat: - i know u dont hav the 98 *u said in ur earlier post* but, may be u hav that re-installation cd which comes free with ur computer. and when u bought ur computer if it was 98 then that re-installation will also install 98 in ur CD. hope u finally understood everything. Ask anything; if u hav question :) always ready to help and giv most precise and easy solution

Why are modern day OSs so bloated? I mean, look at OS X or WindowsXP: the main reason these systems run so slowly on older hardware is that they are so bloated with useless eyecandy and tons of features that almost no one uses....

hmmm i don't think these new systems are made for older hardware. these are so as to keep up with new technologies and multimedia. ... to install win98, u have to have retail version of win98, otherwise it won't let you format the existing xp... as per my experience.

sorry, forgot to ask do u have xp and 98 both in ur system or just xp? if u do, do u have each in each partition? if u have, its piece of cake otherwise, if u just have upgraded XP from 98...good luck finding retail version of 98. :-|

ladyinred-jee, namaste. Actually, that is a very valid question and continues to be a matter of debate in the Computer Science community. However, with the abundance of RAM, permanent storage, and CPU power now, this debate has been nothing but a theoretical one. There is movement that wants only kernel and a very basic set of utilities in the OS. Most of the subscribers of this agenda are really IT guys with advanced computer knowledge, who know exactly how their OSes could be trimmed (if supported by the vendor), to make an optimal use of the available resources. However, the majority of the PC users today aren't as savvy. They all have different needs and expect their PCs meet those needs out of the box. What it means is that the commercial OS makers see it in their business interest to bundle the OS with "commonly used" software products, so that customization (it is very expensive) can be minimized. There is also the 'wow!' factor that helps the marketing... Regardless of their functional value, including some hip (tho resource hungry) technologies (such as rich animation, rendering) as a part of the OS helps boost the sales. There have been cases where OS makers have been asked by courts to remove one or more pieces of the bundled software from the OS. There are many countries that interpret such bundling as violation of their antitrust laws. So what is really in the interest of an ordinary user? Well, it's a difficult question because the needs are so different. But now the industry (even the open source community) has effectively adopted the idea that it is acceptable to include "commonly used" packages as a part of the OS. So I guess we'll have to learn to live with it. Don't know if it answers your question... But those are my couple cents.

Your couple of cents were very valuable. Still, over one Gig for a pure OS X installation is bloat. Media players, web browsers, mail apps etc...they don't have to be that big. It's probably the advertisement crap they pack into it, as well as the excessive use of XML - 20 lines of text just to store a single on/off property...duhhhh!

ladyinred-jee, Umm... XML files (or any other plain text files) are rarely the reason why a modern day OS is Gigs in size.... It's really the binaries... And as far as OS X is concerned, since it's really BSD Unix underneath, it shouldn't be very hard to remove the stuff you don't need... I, personally, think that Tiger is a pretty grandeur OS... :-)
