I am returning to Nepal in a few months after spending four years in the US and completing my undergraduate degree. I don't know what I am gonna do back home. I don't even know if I can find a job in Nepal with an undergraduate degree in economics but I know that if I stay here and do my masters I will stay here forever. So I need to go back right now. I need some help from you guys

1) What is the cheapest way to get back to Nepal--- Googling for a few hours let me to believe that the cheapest way to get back would be to fly to Mumbia from San Franciso via Shanghai (Jet airways. Cost $683) and then take bus/train from there. Is there a cheaper way? If anyone has gone through this route before do you have any suggestions/things I should know?

2) What are some things that I should do (if any) before going back?

3) Am I a fool for deciding to go back?

first thing first... once you're back, if you can answer (to the many who'll ask you) these two questions with confidence and perseverance, you are on track to build a successful life in nepal:

1. Ek dui mahina ta baschau hola ni haina?

Agent bro,As many people have suggested, atleast do Masters and go to Nepal, if you really want to go.If you have a little work experience along with your Masters, that's much better. Or if youdon't have to spend your time here any longer to work, just get your Masters.Only with a Bachelors in Economics, what do you think, would you be able to get a proper and an expected job in Nepal????? There are many good private colleges in Nepal and many studentswho have got good degrees from great colleges in India who will be competing with you. So, to be able to reserve your spot in the competition, Masters will help you a lot.Good Luck.But, if you are planning to go back to Nepal anyways right now, I do not suggest you to travel to Mumbai and then travel by road from there just to save some money. You willhave luggages in Mumbai and that's a long drive from there to Kathmandu. All the hassles, possible troubles at the Indian Airports plus risk of being cheated big time by the locals is not worthsaving $200-$250, I believe. Anyways, all the best!

it is good thought to go back! but i would suggest go back with the master's degree! with bachelor degree, you will not have good job..i mean managerial position! I honor your decision, anyway!

remeber, degree matters in Nepal.  here people with bachelors degree gets good job, hence not many people go for higher studies.  however, it is totally different in nepal, you can find many people with higher degree.  i am not sure if you would be able a good job with your undergrad degree. 

You all forget.. no matter what college you went to nepal..

An American University Degree carries a lot of weight anywhere in the world...

If that wasn't the case.. all of us would be in TU or KU in nepal.. why come here..

Dude if you are planning to go don't worry... you got degree from america not from india or nepal.. You got more credibelity than any other degrees... Master's would be even better... but still your degree has america written on it...

chor, i seriously doubt that.  please do not forget there are good schools in nepal and india as well.  also, we can not compare all american schools are of same standard.  having said that, one of the big factor to get a job in nepal is networking, dont count that out.  also, TU, KU and indian school graduates are also doing very well in usa.  had their education standard were that bad, they would have never done well here. 

 

actually i agree with chor. america ma padera ako bhane pachi ta bhau badi halchani compared to india and nepali colleges.

also agree that u need to have good networks to get jobs. i like opening up ur own business ideas maybe u should do a little research on that and stay here for some more time get a job save some money then go back to open up ur business.

ppl value different things in life seriously money isnt everything. if u think u will be happy living in nepal with less money  and whtever ur life will become maybe u wont even get a job. life is too short to be wasting it trying to be happy. i say do what u think is going to make u feel satisfied and happy now. who knows if tomorrow even exists.

   remember there is a lack of science students in USA. that is why those people are getting jobs here. I doubth it an Indian would get a job before me... that indian better be one of the best in India otherwise he got no chance infront of american graudates...

If you work in IT you will realize.. most indian's are just temps or contractors.. they dont' hold any permanent jobs.. Still I understand the reasoing of Network in nepal..

I got one thing to say... my degree cost 100,000 american dollars to get and an indian degree might cost 100.000 indian rupees and up.. I am not dissing those degrees but be serious dude.. American Degree VS. Indian Degree.. (dhoti degree holds no chance.. forget KU too.. )

Chor, i am not saying american colleges are not good or american graduates are not good.  what i was trying to say is there are good schools in nepal and india as well, or any other countries for that matter.  do you really think one who goes to some 4th tier school are well better than those go to good schools in india, good colleges of TU or KU?  if you think so, you need to hangout with graduates from those schools as well.  I dont work in an IT field, i work as an engineer and i did my masters here.  I was pretty competitive during my school and i am competitve at my work place as well.  i am not comparing myself with top schools here though.  probably you went to very good school in usa, if that is the case, you defintely have better education than most of other nepal or india educated persons.  not only those, even lot better than those who are educated in an average US institutions. may be you have not read news about big financial companies hiring IIM grad from india with very high salary.  brother, we need to look in broader prospect. having a US degree is definitely plus, but we can not say US graduates are always better than nepal graduates. 

i am not supporting any degree here.  i am just trying to be fair in comparison.

you are 100% right. I went to Nepal for a month and everybody was asking me the same question"  aba kahile jane ta uta." i was kind of stranger in my own country. this is really a serious issue...............

Went back to Nepal in 2002 upon completion of my bachelor degree in Australia, started IT company based in KTM .I was earning good amount of money but closed it because one of the government office stopped our payment because I didn't agree to pay the 20 % GHUS .

After about 6 months and paying 20% ( Thats the whole reason I left the company and the GHUS was paid by my partner) our cheque was stopped again by cheque Writer.(  In government office in Nepal there is a position called cheque writer,  and all they do is write  cheques) .

I promised my self that I will never pay GHUS again  so I went back to Australia for my masters and started another company  and now I am currently based in US.

By the way we paid 3000 Rs to the cheque writer.

Running is business is hard in Nepal unless  you are CHOR , FATAHA  and is ready pay some GHUS to get your work done.

Well dude going back to country is not a bad ideas and giving something for our country. Now a days there are lots of people who have done master and worked in banks, finicial instutation and colleges are ta growing like momo pasal. We can try in banks, NGO, INGO and college. You have very strong degree. If you get not happy with  nepal and what u do there then i suggest you to try Canada, England and Australia they have lots of benifits now days for international students  for PR and Work permits. THese nation are coming up with better economic without any mess like usa.so i adivise nepal give something to ur country  then think other nation.

. . . as much as you can.

My advice, for what it's worth: Do NOT worry about the future. People who worry about the future seem to have lousy present
and lousier future. But people who are focused on the present
seem to end up with a much better future.

Nobody knows what anybody's future is like. Life, in Nepal or elsewhere, is a series of zigs and zags, ups and downs; so be
prepared to take good advantage of random opportunities, random encounters, random experiences, and twists and turns that take you to places to do things you can never imagine now. So, come to Nepal with an open mind . .  .with no assumptions.

Be prepared to be surprised, to take some risks in a 'so what or what if' manner, build up networks, and whatever you do, work very hard . . . and trust in the heart of your hearts that, with a bit of persistence and patience, things will turn out all right . . .

Just focus on what you really, really want to do, and do it with hardwork, energy and passion. Allow yourself to make mistakes
so long as you learn things fast.

From what I see, there are plenty of US-returned folks in Nepal,
with all sorts of degrees and even with no degrees . . . and most
of them are doing all right.

I won't have a lot of luggage so I am thinking about going to Nepal via Mumbai --- Jet Airways SAN FRANCISCO (SFO) to MUMBAI (BOM) Cost $875 (including taxes, surchages and fees). This is the cheapest deal I have found so far.
