We all know that beef is prohibited in Nepal since cow is sacred in Hindu religion and hence Hindus cannot eat beef but Nepalese population is not made of hindus only. There are people of other religion who are not restricted by their faith from eating beef or people who don't believe in religion. Countries like Pakistan have not banned the sale of pork even though Pakistan is 97% muslim.

I am writing this just for argument's sake. I am not demanding that beef should be available in Nepal because I am not in Nepal right now and even if I was invailability of beef would not be so much of a problem. It just seemed illogical to me to ban a food product that is widely eaten all over the world.

Since Nepal is not a secular country anymore if someone wants to eat beef they should get to eat beef.

Fug the history, culture, and yada yada yada. If we as a country are done with the king then we are also done with whatever paramparaa that came with it. We are a new Nepal with new Begining. What was does not matter but what is matters a lot.

Yeah there are some resturents in Thamel where u can get beef i remember one is Rum doodle or so.. I went there with couple of fren and one of them ordered steak ... So there is no point on discussing about all religion live in nepal and beef is prohibited. but i still strongly support that cutting cow in Nepal is prohibited and even should be prohibited. whatever we do or where ever we go, respecting our religion is the most important thing in life. And the value given by our parents should alwayes be carried forward whetherther we are in abroad or anywhere... Beef is prohibited in hinduism as we worship cows so.

Since non-Hindu people in Nepal were used to with not killing the cows for past decades or centuries, even if Nepal allows killing cows in the days to come, even non-Hindu people will not be comfortable doing that in Nepal. It's like being a Nepali or growing up in a Nepali culture and ethics, most of the Nepali Muslim eat non-Halal meat especially when Halal meat is not easily available. So, culture or tradition we have over a time has a great infulence on what a whole country does or what people do. Perhaps killing of cows should be continued to be banned to respect the sentiment of mejority of people in Nepal because most of the Hindu Nepalese will not comfortable or happy watching non-Hindu brothers killing cows and non-Hindu people surroundered by thier Hindu brothers will not be comfortable either killing cows and eating beef in Nepali culture at least for another 20 years until when many Hindu Nepalese outside Nepal, not all, who eat beef now go back to Nepal and change the culture or feeling of common people towards it.

The sad part is that All these cows that are preserved and worshipped as Gods in Nepal are sold to India when the get older to be slaughtered...................or secretely slaughtered and sold to the almost underground suppliers of beef to the minor muslim, christian communities and many restaurants..... some become momo without our knowledge ...................That is a fact ......is there a huge cow cemetry in Nepal.???..have anyone actually seen a cow burial????.....I mean We have soooo many cows but no actual burial site or cremation place for old cows where do they go????....They become good income source for stary cow ashraams and their employees . It is a sad fact that cows from Nepal OLD ones are sold for meat.

For whatever reasons, religious or not - cow is still our national animal and it should be logical that a national animal be not slaughtered. However, in most of the countries the national animals are something that are indigenous, rare and exotic - like our danfe. The golden eagle of the USA. The royal bengal tiger of India, etc. Hence, I would also pick some exotic and idigenous animal as our national animal - something like snow leopard, red panda or the one-horn rhino?? Cow is a common animal that is found all over the world and does not necessarily represent Nepal. However, that is debatable since Nepal is prodominantly Hindu and the Hindus will be reluctant let go of a religious symbol of Hinduism. And since there is no harm in it, we should not fight over it. Although sometimes I wonder why is cow so revered and not the dog or the crow which has equal status during the tihar festival. What about the monkeys - monkeys are also supposed to be holy. And the snake that so graciously makes a magnificent garland for Lord Shiva. Or Ganesha's mouse. The ancient Vedic or Hindu religion evidently respected and worshipped nature. And that is one of the greatness of Hinduism - at least the ancient Vedic form of it. It's a different story now - like every other religion, the zealots have taken over hinduism as well. That is why I like to call myself spiritual rather than religious even though I believe in Jesus because in spite of being a Christian I don't agree with the right-wing Christian fanatic philosophy.

Coming back to cows, I still believe that as long as cows are our national animals, we should not be killing them. As for making beef readily available, we can live without beef - it is not an extremely necessary food item but still it would be fair for those who are not religiously bound to be able to enjoy the food they like.

And it is true that many Nepalese people still stay off beef even though they are not hindus. I respect their choice too. For some people it is nepalese tradition not to eat beef and that also sounds reasonable.

The bottom line is that I believe every person should be able to decide for himself or herself and not be dictated by someone else's religious or political beliefs - as long as he or she does not endager or violate other people by doing so.

Unicornis, you have very good questions and that deserves a discussion at an intellectual level. Your points are lost in this thread. Why don't you start a thread of your own with your questions? I will try to contribute my two cents even though I find myself incapable of bringing out any mature intellectual thoughts or points of view.

I think it is inevitable that beef will be legal in Nepal after economic development.

NO BEEF
NO PORK
NO MEAT
NO SACRIFICE

LET'S DECLARE NEPAL THE FIRST AND ONLY VEGETARIAN COUNTRY OF THE WORLD BY BANNING ALL KINDS OF MEAT (THIS WILL ALSO HELP TO SHUT THE MOUTH OF THOSE WHO WANTS NEPAL TO BE THE ONLY HINDU COUNTRY OF THE WORLD).

geda gudi,

where at? i mean which national park Nepal? and what is the difference between regular panda and a red panda?

question ( i have asked this to jharekopaat already) -

1. why cow is the national animal? why not red panda, why not sloth bear, one horn rhinoceros, asian wild elephant and bengal tiger as these latters are endangered species and are wildlife icons of nepal? why cow then which is abundant and often blocks ur way.

enjoy

pat, they have been selling beef commercially in dharan since couple of years n it gets slaughtered right on the spot. no offence to hindu dudes, but accept the fact that kiratis and other indegenous communitites do consume beef traditionally. only after the unification n the states policy of declaring whole country and drafting constitution as per hinduism made it illegal. i always used to get pissed off when they dodnt allow to sell meats on aikadashi, wat the hell do i got to do with aikadashi n not allowed to eat meat. n dharan was the first place to deny such rules and started all the revolts against such unfair rules that is favourable only to hindus and ot of other communitites. wonder why the country has all this anarchism, revolt and unstable political situation.

I did not know cows were slaughtered in Dharan. I was under the impression that slaughtering cows was punishable by law in Nepal.
