Nepali arrested in USA From correspondents in Kathmandu, Nepal, 03:32 PM IST
A 41-year-old Nepali, doing his Ph.D. in the US, has been arrested and charged with trying to lure to bed an undercover police agent posing as an underage teenaged girl. Govinda Bahadur Basnet, a former teacher from Chitwan district in southern Nepal, who was doing his Ph.D. in ecological and environmental anthropology at the Georgia University, was arrested Wednesday after he struck up an acquaintanceship with an undercover agent posing as a 15-year-old girl in an Internet chat room and plied her with sexual conversation and explicit pictures. He set up a date with the undercover officer in Peachtree City, where he lives with his wife and two-year-old son, and was arrested and produced in court. 'He was planning to set up a meeting with the undercover officer 'as soon as he could sneak away' but as soon as we learned he was the father of a two-year-old and was living in the married residences at Georgia with a number of young children around him, we felt we had to go get him,' a local report said quoting the police chief heading the operation. Basnet created a sensation in the courtroom Thursday, weeping hysterically every time the magistrate asked him a question. He was denied bail on the ground he had no job or ties in the US. The university dismissed him immediately after his arrest. Basnet, who had received his graduate degree from the US as well, is pleading for clemency on the ground that his family lived on the stipend from the university. He said it was his only income and that his wife was not employed.

Bipin Jangam, 28, was deported to Kathmandu, Nepal by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an immigration body of the U.S. government in 2006. Jangam, a student, drove from Minnesota to Wisconsin, more than five hours, with the intention to have sex with a 13-year-old girl he met on the Internet. An ICE officer posed as the girl. The officers also found marijuana on him. A Google search of the name “Bipin Jangam”, shows a few articles written by a person with the same name on FES-Nepal’s Web site, a German non-governmental organization; and a quote by someone with the same name on Spotlight, a weekly magazine based in Kathmandu. The article in Spotlight explores why many students are leaving Nepal to study abroad, and the article is titled, “Paradise Lost or Gained?” I wonder what the Nepali government has done about him and other offenders such as, Deepak Bist, 22, when arrested, who was caught live on national television on NBC Dateline’s “To Catch A Predator”. Bist is a chemistry teacher and lived in Florida. Some years have passed and no one has paid attention to them in Nepal. Were they punished or have they continued with their sexual spree? Are there more lurking in our local neighborhoods? Who’s watching?

Hey Mr. Height of Mt Everest, are you that sex offender, you said "I"? If it was mind-slip while writing and you meant to say "he," are you trying to say that Chitwan is lawless district in Nepal and rest of Nepal is fine? What an analysis? Sorry for Govinda Basnet, but he has to face the consequence as it seems that he was not honest with his wife and the child.

This is old news. He was convicted on 9/2007. He was arrested in 2006. This is not a breaking news! Google search on Govinda Bahadur Basnet and you will find plenty.
