Dear Nepali community at Rockville,

I have a training for a month at Rockville, Bethesda, Maryland Starting July. I have no one to talk to about the living and fooding cost there. I would be happy if somebody from the same location talk about the living cost, and housing cost for a month. I would appreciate if you provide me some information regarding this. Also would you tell me how many Nepali are there at the same location?  Nepali community are very helpful and I do believe I will get someone to share about this.

Regards,

Borntoservenepal

i was at rockville past summer for 3 months for my internship. i stayed at a black man's house - very honest and nice person. the area i stayed was great - safe, green and just awesome. i paid 450 a month for rent and shopped at nearby groceries for food (cooked myself - way cheap and healthier). it was quite expensive compared to here (provo) but the company paid me well.

i think few nepali people live at germantown but not sure if there's a community in this area. but there's definitely one in baltimore.

where will you be working btw? they also have a pretty good bus and metro connections around rockville and bethsda.

There are almost 100 nepalese family lives in and around (shady grove, germantown, rockville, bethesda and gaithersburg) but they have their own crowd that hangout with over the weekends. The living expenses is little high and rent is ther same way. You should have an excess to metro and metro bus as a media of transportation i.e shadygrove is the last stop on red line. If you want to meet nepalese in that area there is an appt across from the Lake forest mall where most of our nepalese are staying. Heard there are few who works in the mall as well.

If you are going to be interning at NIH (congratulations btw, even if you have no funding because it can be an excellent feather in your cap), Bethesda is the place to live.  It is little expensive.  But check Craigslist and you might find a reasonable short term accomodation.  You might want to choose a place near the metro station so that you can go around.  Parking is a bitch, so better if you do not have a car.  There are quite a few Nepali households in the area, you just have to ask around.

Dear Borntoservernepal,

I live and work at Rockville. Living cost is crazy if go by apartment listings, however sometime may find good deals in craiglist. Another option would be to share with some one- of course, craiglist is best to start.

Yes as others have suggested there is big Nepalese community, however all are busy in their own way. Lake forest mall area may be around 10 miles away from NIH main campus. There are few people who originated from Nepal and working at NIH. If you have access to global list of gov, you can find them.

If you like, drop me lines at epid08@gmail.com for further info that I am aware of.

Good luck!

Dharan
