OK so you are are a newar or call yourself a newar. But what does newar actually means? Who are actually newars?

One of the common answer would be, people who speak newari. So can you speak in newari ?  Probably yes.

Okie so can you write in newari? Um.....ahh...no

Have you ever tried? Um ....ahh...no

 Why? Coz it is difficult

Said who? ......don't know...I have no resource to learn all that.....

Okie not anymore...

My challenge to all is to let's see if you can write your name in any one of the nepal bhasa scripts. There are plenty of nepal bhasa scripts like prachalit, ranjana, golmol,etc..Atleast 11 of them till now reconized as nepal's own and newars own.

Here is Ranjana script for you...

complete guide to ranjana script can be found at
http://malaiya.tripod.com/ranjana/Ranjana.pdf

and for proposed newari unicode
http://www.evertype.com/standards/tai/newari.pdf

You  will be amazed to see how wonderful it is to be able to write on this script..Just give ya 15 minutes of ya life and see how beautiful it is.

challenge: Write your own name in any one of the nepal bhasa scripts and see how it turns out.

More on Ranjana script....You can use illustration below as guide...

Believe me it is not that difficult....Just try to write ya name and post it in here...

Ranjana

The Ranjana script, which is also known as Kutila or Lantsa,
is one of the many alphabets derived from the Brahmi
script. It developed during the 11th century AD and was used until the mid-20th
century in India and Nepal by the Newar people to write the Newar language.

Tibetans use this script, which they call Lantsa, for writing
the Sanskrit titles of books which have been translated from Sanskrit to
Tibetan, and for decoration in temples and mandalas. There are also a few
texts printed with alternating lines in Sanskrit in the Lantsa
script followed by a Tibetan translation. There were many original Sanskrit
manuscripts written in Lantsa preserved in the old monasteries
of Tibet but most of these were destroyed following the Chinese take-over.

In addition, the Ranjana script is/was used mainly for decoration by
Buddhists in China, Mongolia and Japan

Notable features

  • Ranjana is a syllabic alphabet - each letter has an inherent vowel
[a]. Other vowels can be indicated using a separate letters or diacritics.

Used to write:

Nepal Bhasa (नेपाल भाषा/Newah Bhaye/Newar),
a member of the Tibeto-Burman group of Sino-Tibetan languages spoken in Nepal and India
by about 775,000 people. Nepal Bhasa is also written with the
Devanagari alphabet.

Also used to write Sanskrit, the classical language
of India.

@ luxme You can use a digital camera or scanner to get it to digital format and you can post whatever you have written.

@khem raj You don't have to write ya real name. I thought of writing name as way of introducing yourself. You can write ya nickname or even your sajha username.

Let'see people who have taken up challenge...

I feel that there is nothing special about writing your name using the Ranjana script or for that matter any other scripts that you've mentioned. They are all variants of the Brahmi script and were used to write several languages including Nepal Bhasa, Sanskrit etc in our region at some points of time in the past and also at present. Since it has almost the same set of alphabets as the Devanagari script, I won't have any problem writing my name using this script. What is the challenge here?? If you meant learning to use the script to write in everyday use, then that's a different thing.

Scripts are a matter of identity, however I'm not so fond of the ways in which modified sets of symbols representing the same alphabet set were brought into use and promoted in specific regions of the subcontinent in the past for no obvious reasons (such as the fundamental limitations in representing language specific sounds). It might have happened in the past because of geographical isolation and parallel development but that does not appear to be the natural course of development in the future. Anyway, I would not be too obsessed with the technical (writing script) aspect of the language's use, what's natural is the spoken part and it's inherent style of expression, and what's important is its usability and popularity. Once you decide a set of alpbhbets to write it, I would not see the set of symbols as a massively important 'natural' aspect of it, unless the set was unique in the sense of being able to represent specific sounds not found in the other languages. Sometimes I find some positive things in the Chinese system of writing. At least, any written document would be intelligible to everyone irrespective of the language spoken.

@ sexy in sari Ya the title was to catch as many people as possible...And so u not upto challenge?

@ naivelyStupid I guess u are true too your name. Well Ranjana is a special script my friend, if you didn't know. It is usually written for decorative and holy ritual purpose. Nowdays, it is used for mainly for headlines and titles. Well I hope you have heard about discussion about whether to give preference to Ranjana or prachalit as nepal bhasa script. Reason I am insisting on Ranjana on this thread is due to fact that Ranjana is not extensively used. And for such purpose like writing names I believe Ranjana is perfect. Ranjana was entered as one the offical script of Nepal when nepal joined UN as a free nation and still recognized as one of the most beautiful scripts in the world. It is found in so many countries and so why not make it popular in nepal too?  Don't you think it bears some significance..

So you are talking about Bhrami script..Okie..It is preety old script and ya it is also parent script of even Dev nagari. However we as nepalese can't claim brahmi to be our's own of origin.

As you have said scripts are matter of identity and if you aren't fond of your identity, there is very little I can say to you.

I can point out to you many ways how Ranjana is a special script but really if you aren't fond of ya identity it is useless discussion. Although Ranjana is usually written from left to right but the Kutakshar form is written from top to bottom which makes it preety much very special as most of the scripts in the world is either written from left to right or right to left.

Besides Ranjana is a more of a calligraphic script which by definition is more beautiful. Any person who had love and regard for art would probably agree with my previous statement as chinese and arabic are also considered beautiful piece of art.

Regarding technical aspect, Ranjana can represent all the sound that you would probably can associate with because it was used to write nepal bhasa and sanskrit also.

Regarding representation of sounds, Oh you are so misguided my friend. Scripts are not always directly related to any particular langauge as in the case of Ranjana. It has been used all over the world. So it can actually represnt more sound than you can think of.If you think chinese system of writing is better, ask your chinese friend how many alphabets does he knows in chinese. Besides, chinese script alphabets aren't representation of sounds , rather they are for objects. Each alphabet is for each object. I wonder how did you come to your conclusion.  Your name can't even be exactly represented in chinese....Truly, you are as your name says...naivelyStupid.

And yes writing is also form of expression...and also art...
