Olive oil comes from olives. Sesame seed oil comes from sesame seeds.
But what is a canola? Canola is actually a made-up word for a genetically modified product.
Canola stands for “Canadian oil low acid.” It’s (sadly) a Canadian invention and subsidized by the government. The subsidies make it very cheap to use, so almost all processed or packaged foods contain canola oil. Be sure to read the ingredients. Here’s why you should:
THE SCOOP ON CANOLA
Canola oil is developed from the rapeseed plant, which is part of the mustard family of plants. These oils have long been used for industrial purposes (in candles, lipsticks, soaps, inks, lubricants, and biofuels). It’s an industrial oil, not a food.
Rapeseed oil is the source behind mustard gas, and on its own it causes emphysema, respiratory distress, anemia, constipation, irritability, and blindness. But through the beauty of genetic modification, we now sell it as an edible oil.
The claim is that canola is safe to use because through modification it is no longer rapeseed but “canola.” Except… canola is just genetically modified rapeseed. It has been marketed as a wonder oil that is low in saturated fats with a beneficial omega-3 fatty acid profile. It is recognized by the American Dietetic Association and the American Heart Association based on the belief that the absence of saturated fats alone makes it healthy.
It is now believed that rapeseed has a cumulative effect, taking almost 10 years before symptoms begin to manifest. One possible effect of long-term use is the destruction of the protective coating surrounding nerves called the myelin sheath. This is like having raw, open wires in the body. Some symptoms include:
- tremors and shaking
- uncoordination when walking or writing
- slurred speech
- deterioration of memory and thinking processes
- fuzzy or low audio levels
- difficulty urinating/incontinence
- breathing problems/short of breath
- nervous breakdown
- numbness and tingling in extremities
- heart problems/arrhythmia
From a nutritional perspective, canola oil has been found to deplete Vitamin E. It has a tendency to inhibit proper metabolism of foods and normal enzyme function. It also depresses the immune system.
THE SCOOP ON GMOs
Today, 72% of all products from the United States are genetically modified. The top 3 genetically modified foods are:
- canola
- corn
- soy
Not too far behind them are potatoes, tomatoes, sweet peppers, peanuts, and sunflower.
Companies that commonly use genetic modification are:
- Kellogg’s
- Kraft
- Miss Vickie’s
- Hershey’s
- Coke
- Gatorade
- General Mills
- Labatt beer
- McCain
- No Name
- President’s Choice
- Quaker Oats
- Ragu
When an attempt was made for new legislation to force the labeling of genetically modified products in grocery stores, the three companies of Kellogg’s, Monsanto, and DuPont spent $55 millions to fight it and eventually won. It is not mandatory for companies to let the consumers know when they have used genetic modification. Which is why today I refuse to use a Kellogg’s product (very corn-based). Produce that is genetically modified is sometimes identified by a 5-digit number on its sticker that starts with an 8. But not always.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF GMOs ON HUMANS
1. Toxicity
Apparently they have GMO Christmas trees that glow in the dark. Slightly cool, but kind of disturbing. They can also make pigs glow in the dark by injecting them with jellyfish.
2. Allergic reactions
Our bodies were not built to recognize and consume GMOs. They are foreign substances in our digestive system and in our bloodstream.
3. Antibiotic resistance
Many plants are engineered to become resistant. We consume those same toxins and may in turn develop resistances.
4. Cancer
GMOs are an offense to our cells. They depress our immune system and may allow for the onset of cancer.
5. Immuno-suppresion
Our immune system doesn’t recognize GMOs. It works to expel them from our bodies as soon as possible, and has less time to work towards our general well being.
Besides the above, GMOs have a negative effect on nature. It upsets the balance of the earth, harms wild plants, and disturbs the life cycle of wild animals.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
Since learning the above, I’ve made some changes. They’re small, but I feel good about them.
- I don’t buy or use anything that contains canola.
- I don’t buy or use any Kellogg’s products.
- I look at the produce stickers on my fruits and vegetables. Just in case.
- I stay away from processed foods, as they are most likely GMO.
GMOs are a big scary topic. But even without labeling, most of us can incorporate small changes to eat more naturally.

Editor’s Note:
Hey all! Thanks for the comments! So – I posted this shortly after starting the blog over a year ago.. it’s straight out of the notes of my Ecology class at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition.
I’ve since moved to San Diego and my notes are in Canada, so unfortunately don’t have access to the sources the instructor used. I didn’t think to put references at the time since I had approximately two readers, and one of them was my mom .. However, there are now tons of links in the comments below if you feel like scanning them.
THAT said, obviously this is not a scientific source (it’s a blog…) and you should ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do your own research when it comes to what you eat/don’t eat (duh). Do what you think is healthy for your own body and try not to be cruel to others. Thanks for reading!

Dear expert,
I used Canola oil on one of my girlfriends and, of course, on myself too, am I in serious trouble now?
Your response will be appreciated.
Thanks,

@Nepali.Chhoro Glad u asked. When I say "in large part" I meant the olive oil you buy in the stores, the ones with Extra Virgin titles, they are mostly a mix of different oil with olive scents on them. Most will have some portion of actual olive oil but too much of other mixes that the actual "extra virgin" part loses its meaning. The end result is that you will be consuming olive oil without getting its said benefit; rather getting the bad ingredients. Here's a link that touches on this subject lightly; you can google for more info on this. http://www.npr.org/2011/12/12/143154180/losing-virginity-olive-oils-scandalous-industry

Olive oil comes from olive..... sunflower oil comes from sunflower......
Where do baby oil come from ??? These companies are there tomake money so you should use your own discretion on what you buy !!
.............................................
GM foods are still being researched and there are still not any scientific evidence saying if it is good or bad.
In UK ( and most of Europe) Rapeseed Oil is sold as Rapeseed Oil not as Canola Oil, Rapeseed Oil is supposed to be better than most other oils and is expesive than sunflower oil.
As the editor said , its down to you to reseach on what you choose to eat.

This email i received might have been outdated but I guess it is related to the topic here:
Dear All,
USAID in cooperation with Monsanto Corp. is going to start a large
project to introduce hybrid maize seeds to Nepal. The next step will
be GM (Genetically Modified) seed. This is a very controversial
topic, it is powered by big business, and it will change agriculture
in Nepal in serious ways.
For those who are interested in and have opinions about the future of
agriculture in Nepal, I am sending the link to US Ambassador Scott H.
DeLisi's Facebook page. Here you can post your comments about the
USAID/Monsanto Hybrid seed project. If you know the problems that
come with hybrid seed and GM (Genetically Modified) seed, our best
approach is to demonstrate and prove that organic is a better way.
There is now a lot of evidence for this.
https://www.facebook.com/Scott.H.DeLisi/posts/249216445120291
It is important for us to write our opinions about the best future for
farmers in Nepal. Organic? Hybrid? GMO? Please use the facts in
your comments. We don't want to start a fight, but we want to educate
the US ambassador and as many other people as possible.
I have also made a Facebook page: Food Security How? Organic?
Hybrid? GM? https://www.facebook.com/pages/Food-Security-How-Organic-Hybrid-GM-farming/188856751190242
This goal of this page is to educate as many people as possible about
the pros and cons of organic, hybrid and GM farming, so that Nepal can
make an informed choice for the future of farming. Please educate
yourselves and share with others.
Namaste,
Jim

USAID TEAMS WITH THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND COOPERATIVES AND THE MONSANTO COMPANY TO ENHANCE MAIZE PRODUCTION IN NEPAL
Tuesday, 13 September 2011 16:52
The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the Department of Agriculture, USAID, and Monsanto have partnered to promote the use of hybrid maize seeds and provide training to farmers in Nepal.
The U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID) through its Nepal Economic, Agriculture, and Trade Activity (NEAT) has teamed with the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. based Monsanto Company to enhance the maize sector in Nepal. As a part of this coordinated effort, a knowledge sharing workshop was held on September 12th at the Hotel Himalaya, where 50 stakeholders from Nepal’s public and private sectors, including those involved in research and development, seed production, and maize purchasing, discussed the current state of the maize industry, identified challenges, and discussed initiatives that are both underway and forthcoming to enhance maize production.
The workshop was part of a multi-faceted program supported by NEAT to enhance the maize industry as part of its efforts to improve food security in select districts of the mid-and-far west regions. Among other efforts, USAID/NEAT and Monsanto, in coordination the Government of Nepal, will implement a pilot maize production project to promote the use of hybrid seeds in the key maize producing districts of Chitwan, Nawal Parasi, and Kavre. This pilot project will target 20,000 farmers and include training on hybrid maize production practices and facilitate linkages between producers and end-users.
Speaking at the workshop’s opening, the Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives Mr. Umakant Jha said he appreciated the opportunity to work with USAID, particularly on this maize initiative. Mr. Amitabh Jaipuria, Managing Director from Monsanto/India, expressed his full commitment and support to strengthen Nepal’s research and development capacity to enhance maize productivity and income through strategic interventions in coordination with NEAT and the Government of Nepal.
Also speaking at the workshop’s opening, USAID Mission Director David C. Atteberry remarked, “most maize farmers are unaware of the health and financial benefits that high-yielding hybrid seeds can provide. Improved seeds and targeted capacity building on crop management will allow maize producers in Nepal to reap the full benefit of their labor. This is not the solution for all producers in all geographic zones but it is a key solution for many.”
“Maize is a very important crop, both as a staple food as well as a cash crop. The feed industry in Nepal currently requires an estimated 270,000 tons of maize, yet is only able to purchase half of that amount—135,000 tons—in Nepal. The remaining 135,000 metric tons of maize is imported for the feed industry every year, with a value of approximately 200 million NPR. This is a lost opportunity for farmers in Nepal,” added Mr. Atteberry.
The two-year NEAT program is an important endeavor that seeks to improve the business environment, work with the Government of Nepal (GON) to strengthen fiscal and trade policies, encourage competitiveness and exports, enhance food security and increase access to financial services.

With a little bit of help of google, this will help explain the above urban legend. Source - Mayoclinic
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/canola-oil/AN01281
Canola oil: Does it contain toxins?
I read an article on the Internet that said canola oil contains toxins that are harmful to humans. Is this true?
Answer
from Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D.
Health concerns about canola oil that are being circulated on the Internet are unfounded.
Misinformation about the safety of canola oil may stem from the fact that, years ago, oil was produced from the rapeseed plant. Rapeseed oil contains very high levels of erucic acid, a compound that in large amounts can be toxic to humans. The canola plant was developed by natural crossbreeding from the rapeseed plant. Canola oil is produced from canola plants, not rapeseed plants. Canola plants have very low levels of erucic acid.
Canola oil is generally recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration. In fact, canola oil is very low in saturated fat and has a very high proportion of monounsaturated fat, so it's a healthy and safe choice when it comes to oils.

What cybernepali presented here is from a blog, and it is not necessarilya truth. In fact, most of the arguments are false.
I'd like to begin with the so called negative effects of GMOs:
1. Toxicity: Read the writers argument; it deserves a big LOL. How is what he/she wrote even relevant? And btw, if GMOs were toxic, you'd be sick or dead by now, because almost all of your food comes from GMOs
2. Allergic reactions: generally, you get allergies when your immune system over reacts to something. Some GMOs might cause allergies, but rarely. Ever heard of people having allergies because of eating tomatoes? They are all genetically modified.
3. Antibiotic resistance: You are eating food for God sake, not transfecting your cells with the tomato or potato cells! They go down the digestive tract, get digested, things get absorbed and the rest are thrown out. GMOs are like any other food (and every other food is genetically modified in some way)
4. Cancer: If GMOs caused cancer, cancer would have already killed more than half of US population.
5. Immunosuppression: Everything you put in your body is foreign (unless they are your own cells, blood or other genetically related objects. And btw, all foods, whether they are genetically modified or not eventually get expelled.
Talking about Canonla oil, it's not just one oil. It's a mixture of oil and thus doesn't have one specific molecular formula. If there were just one, i'd post it here to show that it has basically the same molecular structure of any other oil. Canola oil however, is more unsaturated than sunflower or sesame seed oil and thus is considered better because it clogs your arteries less than a sesame seed oil or butter, etc would. The writer says wait 10 years and you'll find the effect. That's a long period of time and there are lots of variables. And I bet you'll get diseases like those by consuming non-modified oils as well.
Issues like these are always raised by people who are not in the science. They are over conscious of their health. They don't find it wrong to eat chicken or beef and even milk produced from animals injected with growth hormone and other steroid hormones, but they fear plants that are genetically modified.
Life without GMOs is not possible and world will be starving because of lack of food. But there are some ugly sides too - giant companies like Monsanto patenting the seeds, loss of taste while making food more nutritious or bigger, loss of one beneficial characteristic while developing other, etc.
People who eat organic foods might think that their foods are not GMOs, but sorry to say, you are wrong. Organic foods are also genetically modified; they just grow them in organic way i.e. without using chemicals, pesticides, etc.
We can't escape GMOs and I don't see a reason why we need to. Eat good, do your regular exercises, take enough rest. That's enough to keep you healthy and clear the toxins produced by your body and the toxins you ingest when breathing, eating, drinking, and so on.
