well it depends i think
cost of living in kathmandu specificly can range from rupian 2-3hazar to rupian 1 lakh or as much u can spend
here are the few expenses
kotha vada can ranges from rupian 1000 to rupian 7000 or can find expensive one also
momo rupian 10 dekhin rupian 100
pizza rupian 700 dekhin rupian 2000
travelling expenses by bus rupian 5 dekhin rupian 20
car rupian 500- rupian 1000
raksi rupian 5 dekhin rupian 6000
average cheap living expenses per month is rupian 3500 to rupian 4500
average expensive living expenses per month rupian 7000 to rupian 1 lakh or as much as u can spend
so it tottally depends

So what would be your estimated monthly budget for a family of three - husband, wife and child - who:
- own their own residence
- use public transportation
- do eat out once a week in a moderate restaurant, but don't drink alcohol
- don't have any extraordinary spending habits
Any ideas?

I heard 1 cylinder of cooking gas was Rs.1500, but they recently reduced it to Rs.1350 because of mass protest.

I think Rs 25000 is very bare minimum specially if you have children. You have to pay at least 10,000 a month for school.

nepali_american,
One way public transportation (tampoo, bus, micro) would cost one person 15 - 20 bucks. Most part it is 15. Kalanki to Lagankhel is 17 where as Lagankhel to Ratnapark is 15. It would cost you easy 600 bucks for a family of 3 to make a trip to a simple restaurant and all you order is 3 plates of momo and have 3 soft drinks. (100 x 3 + 50 x 3 = 450 plus 10% service tax and tips (I usually leave few bucks)). Other than that, most of the stuffs as as expensive as any other major cities including NYC. Try Himalayan Java and ask for a modest cup of Americano and it's almost the same as what they charge you outside Manhattan in NYC.

So here's my estimation of what I think is a typical monthly budget for family of 3:
Rent: 0 - family owns the house
Groceries: 6000
Cooking Gas: 1000
Water: 1000
Electricity: 1500
Telephone (landline & mobiles): 1500
Transportation (public): 2000
Eat out: 2000
clothing: 2000
Entertainment (movies, cable tv, etc.): 2000
healthcare: 2000
Incidentals (repair, gifts, whathaveyous, etc.): 2000
Total: 23,000
I see above as reasonable budget. Tell me if I am off the mark. I have not included the child's tuition, fees, etc. as I do not know how much a typical school costs.
What do you think?

1 dollar =75 rupees
rupian 23000/75=dollar 306.66
schooling 1 lakh rupian /75= dollar 1333 yearly monthly wise rupian 1500 =20 dollar
so
306.66+20= 326 dollar will do
so i would say
326.66 dollar which is like rupian round figure 2500 will do
(side note: just to let you know average nepali make less than 200 dollar yearly which is less than 15000 source some randon site when googled it )
