If you do have health insurance , just add the newly born child. Check your state health insurance program. Your child is eligible for state health program. Some state provide free depending upon income level .

If you fall under low income category, some states have state funded insurance for the children, which is free. You should look into your state's website.

I do have student health insurance but it doesn't cover regular doctor visit and vaccinatioin. Also i am not eligible for state health insurance program as my income level is little bit high.

Thank you BairagiKailo and lilo for replying back.

If you have Kaiser Permanente in your area they are the best, even though their premium is bit high, everything is covered and you won't get any surprise bills.

What state are you in? All health insurance providers so far I have known cover infants until 1months for FREE if mother is insured at that time.

Based on annual income most of the states in midwest and south provide insurance for free to nominal charge. If you are student...you should be able to prove that you earn less than 30,000, you qualify.

Most of the insurance plans I know cover an infant for a small percentage of what adult coverage costs. e.g. My friend's company pays $556/mo for him and his wife's insurance. Company doesn't pay for children, he pays additional $93 for infant..

Thank you Jenny and Lamjung for your kind reply.

Lamjung, As my income is just a little bit above the poverty line set by the federal gov. i am not qualified for the state health insurance. I receive my pay stub on check so i don't see any possible way to make it lower since its automatically recorded through company.

You have stated that your friend's company pays $556/mon for him including his wife. I guess company is deducting that amount from his pay check right. Or is that exclussive to his pay stuff provided by the company as part of employee support (i.e benefits). If that is the case then i will contact my company's concerned group to find whether my company do have such kind of facility then will add mine and my wife's along with additional $$ for my child.

I can't conclusively answer more about my friend's case right now..but it should be, as you said, a pre-tax deduction..I don't know about your state but my family members used to live in TX and  LA until recently. TX has another form of Medicaid coverage for kids from families slightly ABOVE (federal ?) poverty level. Poverty level, I think is 25K gross for 3-people family. Another program is there from same agency that has nominal ($5?) co-pay for families above 25K limit but below 30 or 35K. Most states are not that supportive in this matter...hope your state also has something.
