It might be easier for people to reply if you posted what subject/field are you looking at.

Do you have good GPA in your college? At least above 3.75 ? and do you know that your professors are willing to write you a very good letter of recommendation?

If these two things are working in your favor..you might be able to get in even with a decent gre score.

ya danfe is right GRE is not only the factor that governs, if professors give you recommendation quoting that u r brilliant student but due to some reason was not able to score that much in GRE and u have got good gpa even very good university will give scholarship/funding. I have good GPA and good GRE score but has always confrontation with professors u think I will get scholarship noway.... let's see what is in store ....but it will be more clear if u clearify where r u applying from US or outside and which major....

Hi Dafe123

Yes, I have 3.91 GPA and almost every professor have good feeling about me but worrying about GRE, I am preparing GRE but I am sure I will not score competitive mark. My field is Business Management and its Education, Leadership or Entrepreneurship. I don't want to attempt GMAT because GMAT only accepts by Business school but GRE is acceptable for business school as well as other non business school. Please help me recommending university names which prefer good GPA and recommendations as well as offer scholarship rather than Highest GRE or GMAT score. Or University with cheap tuition fees

Gopu,

You shouldn't be looking for cheap universities yet.  With your GPA, shoot for the better ones.
Better unis are well funded and thus your chances of getting funded are also higher.  Don't worry much about the GRE score.  You should be fine if you can satisfy the department requirement.  You already have the grades and recommendations, get a good statement of purpose and you should be all set.

Good Luck!

Hey Gopu,

I aggree with F22 on that. Apply to good grad schools, you should get interveiws for sure..and it all depends on you after that...

I had similar situation like you ..and still got into grad school with full tution scholarship + stipend (although my field is biology and almost all grad students get this).

I don't know how it works for Business schools, but I've heard that even in business schools you can get tution scholarships (full or partial) + stipends.

But about naming which business schools do that, I do not know a whole lot. You will probably know more than me about business schools. Although I've heard that Northern Illionois University give out tuition and stipends for business (i am not 100% sure).

Sorry couldn't be a lot of help with naming out schools.

Good luck with your grad school hunt..

Do the faculty in business schools take students for research purpose? Most of the science students are supported by research grants secured by faculty.

If you have already short listed your schools, you may want to contact the department of those schools and ask them if they support international students (assuming you are an international in US) financially. If you need financial support, you don't want to send your application to the school that doesn't give you a cent.

If I were you, I would ask some questions to myself like:
  • Do I need financial support or not?
  • Does the school provide financial support to international students?
  • How many international students does the department take every year?
  • If that particular school interests you, it would be nice to communicate with the current student (Nepali or Asian) who can give you better perspective..
  • Does the department offer what I want to pursue academically?
  • Is my GRE/GMAT score competitive enough? (You can always look at the statistics of their accepted students. The score does matter when there will be many applicants with 4.0 GPA competing for limited spots. Last year, when I was traveling around for admissions interviews, I met some applicants with 5-10 years work experience but now going back to school. Blame current economic situation).
  • Does location of school matter?
  • How good is alumni network? (It helps when you enter into job market)
  • Does the school ask you to come for the interview with the faculty?....

Anyhow, it really depends what you want in a graduate school. You seem to have good GPA. I know it is long and painful process, but it will worth at the end.

One last note: if you get a chance, visit gradcafe.com

Good luck buddy!

Hi,

As already mentioned by some people here, your GPA, recommendation lettersa nd Statement of Purpose are very important factors to get you into PhD. BUT since there are lot more people going for a graduate degree nowadays since the prospects of the job market aren't very bright, it has  become a lot more competative and a lot of schools are concentrating on GRE a lot more. Having said that, a lot of schools concentrate primarily on the Quantitative score rather than the Verbal score. Hence, you have an opportunity of getting a comparitively high Quantitative score and still getting in. Since I got the impression from you that you are yet to take the GRE, I think you should not try to get around it... but try your best to get good score on it. If you are having a problem with verbal (like I did) then concentrate on scoring good on the quantitative. Though most schools will not give you a cut off score, GRE is a huge determination of admission in grad. school.

I think recommendations are also very important.. but not as important as the Statement of Purpose. You need to let the schools know that you are THE right candidate for the program. Once you are called for an interview.. be very confident and convince them that you are going to do everything possible to be successful in their program. Make them believe that picking you would be a decision that they would never regret. And wallah.. you will find yourself laboring day and night in a PhD program! Hope that helps. :)

P.S: If you need scholarships, assistantships or fellowships, dont forget to mention that in your application form and they will automatically consider you for it as long as they are ready to admit you and have the funding (which most places do).

Thanks Buddies

It is a great encouragement for me. I am trying my best. I already attempted GRE and got 710 which is very low and again trying GMAT (2nd take). I took GMAT in 2007 before MS from US by reading one week and I got the last and lowest number/percentile.

As colleagues said, I will focus on Quantitative. Please send me some grad school who looks portfolio rather than test score.

Best

Gopu, what do mean by "I already attempted GRE and got 710 which is very low and again trying GMAT (2nd take)".. are you taking GRE or GMAT for second time?

I feel very weird because for a person with GPA of 3.91 it is impossible to get just 710 out of 1600 in GRE no matter how bad you perform the test unless 710 is just quantitative.
