This is a wrong statistics. Only the statistics in the West reflect true numbers. As far as India and Asia is concerned, that number is much higher. In these countries rape means violent ones committed by strangers mostly. Rapes commited by husband, boyfriend, relatives do not surface. For example, even a husband can be accused of rape if there is no consent. That is why such statistics are not fair to the West, makes it look like lots of violent rape happen there. In Asia most women also keep quiet due to stigma.

This statistics might be true. They might have looked police reports. In US if you stare at women for a while its considered as emotional rape (lol) ; she might call 911.
But in India , China most of cases even doesnt go to police.
So it might be true statistics but wrong information.

Well, It is not my intention to defend or refute the data. Posting was merely for information purpose only. I agree that many such incident remains unreported in developing countries. But the assumption that every such incident is reported in US of A is is controversial and may be not true. Following data about rape in US is shocking, Please read  following. Some posters seems confused with sexual assult and rape. They are two different things

Reporting Rates
Sexual assault is one of the most under reported crimes, with 54% still being left unreported.1

What happens to Rapists When They are Caught and Prosecuted?

54% of rapes/sexual assaults are not reported to the police, according to a statistical average of the past 5 years. Those rapists, of course, never spend a day in prison. Factoring in unreported rapes, only about 3% of rapists ever serve a day in jail.

following also shows that how many cases of rapes are reported in US mi,itary which is supposed to be highly deciplined organization.
Looks like facts and assumption are at the opposite end in many developed countries regarding everything is being reported.

Documentary unveils rape in US military with testimonials

A new feature film documentary is winning festival awards and garnering national attention for its in-depth focus on the thousands of women raped every year within the U.S. military.

The makers of “The Invisible War” solicited personal stories from victims and interviewed about 70 for hours each.

At one point in the theatrical trailer, one woman, Kori Cioca, who says she was raped by her supervisor in the U.S. Coast Guard, brandished a hand knife with a blade longer than her fingers, explaining how she carries it on her at all times.

“You always have protection with Jesus but sometimes you need just a little bit more,” said Cioca, who was also holding a metal cross.

According to the Defense Department’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response report for 2011, of the 2,617 reported assaults, it is estimated that the figure represents only 14 percent of all actual offenses, making the total number of victims at 19,000 last year.

Of the 2011 sexual assaults, 191 military members were convicted as courts-martial, according to the film’s website.

Cioca’s attacker admitted to breaking her jaw and other physical abuse but not the rape, according to the film. She is now battling with Veterans Affairs to win approval for surgery.

In addition to numerous victims, the documentary interviews military and defense personnel, elected officials, mental health professionals and others.

Besides attempting to chronicle the crimes, the film aims to expose how the threat persists and how wide-spread the damage can be.

“The military is a very effective fighting force when it comes to dealing with the enemy without. It’s really now time for them to start dealing with this enemy within,” said one of the filmmakers Kirby Dick.

Among other awards, “The Invisible War” won the Sundance Film Festival Audience Award and is set to open at select theaters June 22.

At least in India, there is a consistent media and people's outrage over this which has also got media coverage here in the west, which probably means something will be done. Sooner, hopefully than later. I have been getting petition in my fb and email to do something about rape epidemic in India.

At the same time,

Equally horrific incident in Nepal gets very little press coverage let alone outrage from any section of the society. I'm just apalled. And this is not the first time. Either it be a woman accused as a witch, burnt to death, beaten down, the coverage is minimum and if any treated as a triviality that occurs on a daily basis!

NEW DELHI, OCT 16 - A Nepali student at National Law School in the southern Indian city of Bangalore was ' gang-rape d' on Saturday night, police said. The incident was revealed on Monday morning after the victim in her early twenties registered a first information report with Jnanabharathi Police Station.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) in Bangalore, SN Siddaramappa, told the Post over the phone that search for the culprits had been intensified. "We have arrested a number of suspects. However, their involvement could not be immediately established," he added.

Siddaramappa informed that the police were waiting for the victim's medical reports. "Results of the medical tests are important but they are not the only criteria to establish that rape has taken place. The victim's statement is the most important thing--she has reported that she was gang-rape d and, hence, we are moving ahead on that basis," said Siddaramappa.

Police have notified the Nepali embassy in New Delhi about the incident. Embassy officials immediately talked to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, requesting authorities to look into the matter seriously.

"After receiving the information, we have talked to the concerned officials and urged them to bring the culprits to book as soon as possible," said Tirtha Raj Wagle, counsellor at the Nepali embassy.

In the complaint lodged with the police, the victim is said to have stated that she was raped by a gang of eight miscreants. The gang attacked her male companion during a walk, before dragging her to an isolated place to rape, Indian media have reported.
