getting project is not easy, especially if you are not affiliated with one of the big vendors. What consultancy does is throws your fake resume in the pool and if you get lucky you get the project. So, don't just stick with SQL server or database, go for any QA/BA or whatever you find to get initial experience. Then, you can do guff gaff, expand in next project. where are you located?

please guys help me out too. i am little on the older side (36) and don't have many true friends where i live. I did my undergrad in info systems and masters in mba , i am dead bored of the non IT field. at this age, i don' t think going to school is the best idea, so i need to go into IT. i have done c++, and database in the college but no real time experience. I am scared to go to indian consultancies because i have heard they make you sign contract and sue you if you break them.. please guide me. i am so lost. i have always lived in small towns and small places and don' t know how to land a job or a consultancy. i can learn technologies and programming fact if i dedicate time but do you think i still have chance? i ask this because IT seems like is for young people.. do u think i should learn Networking, i can go to school if i have to for a year or two and get my masters, do you think that would worth it? it seems like all my dv friends from Nepal without any IT classes are getting IT jobs, so what's the point of going to school for 2nd masters, thats how i feel like..

@taxidriver You are still young, well not as young as like 25 years one, but still you are young. It is never too late to start anything my friend. Having said that, let me ask you this. When you are in college did you enjoy C++ or database class ? if you liked C++ go for web developer if you have enjoyed database, then go as a Database Developer. " i can learn technologies and programming fact if i dedicate time but do you think i still have chance? " Yes, you still have chance and I know you can do it. Just don't let anything pull you back. To land a job, you have two options 1) go to a consultancy. or 2) apply yourself as a junior level (if you have GC this is another option). if you need any info let us know. Good Luck.

Finally, Tech ko post. I have the same problem as Kris. I'm 20 and doing undergrad in the states. I'm looking for a tech related job. I don't have any experience. What do you guys think I should do? I'm really worried for my first job. Should I join a boot camp or some other stuff to get first job? Right now, I'm a sophomore at NYU. I'm thinking of doing AI and Machine learning. Any advice which language should I pick?

Mero naam ho , thanks for replying bro.. I was sad that no one replied. i was adding this on my list as one of the many ventures i have done to land a IT job in last few years and all unsuccessful. So god bless you. I did apply few junior positions as i don't have any work authorization issues, but to no avail. Good thing is i did get some good interviews from some good companies but at the end of the day they made me wait and finally hired others. the only good thing that came out of the whole job hunting process last year is i did get lots of good interviews from some good companies and even the state where i live. I guess they like the undergrad i did from a good state university and mba... but i don't remember anything i learned in the college years ago and it was only few class in IT anyway. So i don' t know what to do. I do work with lots of applications and although i am not directly involved with programming etc , i still work closely with IT. I tried to learn some database last year on my own and it was an easy breeze for me , even oracle. I took some classes from udemy and i'm took some classes in local colleges too, but still i just don' t see how to land a job because even junior or associate level job wants 2-3 years of experience. do you know any good IT company who would train online? do you think i should just train as QA or BA and enter and try to get into database? do you think there will be enough database jobs in the future because of bigdata ? if i spend time and energy learning relational database as oracle would it be worth it since big data in in the market and is growing? please help..

@taxidriver From your post, it looks like that you already have a good job in a non technical field, probably on a business side. Not sure why you want to change your carrier (money , growth , something else, or just because you tired of your day job). if you want to switch your carrier just because you are bored with your current job, then switching carrier won't help you much. because after few years you will get bored on IT too unless you have very strong interest to learn something new everyday. Having said that if you have decided to go into the IT field, you can go into one of the following category : 1) Business Analysts (BA) - Hybrid of tech and non tech fields. means depending on your task you might have to do some technical on very basic level (like sql query, or understand a small chunk of java code to write requirements and so on) and communicate with business people. mostly this position is for people with non technical background. 2) Quality analyst (QA) - again hybrid of tech and non tech but mostly it falls under tech category (if your job role is on automation then you might have to write automation scripts). if you get a job with a manual testing then understanding of simple applications(word , excel) will be good enough. It all depends on the job requirement. 3) Developer - Pure technical , you will communicate with BAs to understand the requirements and code accordingly. This includes programmers (java, .net ) , database developers (sql, oracle) and also includes ETL devlopers (informatica and so on ) . The main thing is that you have to updates yourself constantly with new requirements, means you will learn something new everyday. Now, regarding job growth in future - I will say developer (it could be anything), programming or database. These technologies are not going to fade out soon. Once you learn one programming language and then switching to the new one is really easy. Most developers know 2 or 3 languages along with database development. As a matter of fact having a good knowledge of database is a requirement for developers. Also, please also consider that if you go through consultancy its not a full time job. means that if you are in a project then they will pay you. the moment you loose your job they will stop paying you. Most of them will pay on hourly basis, Unless big consulting companies hire you as a full time employee. I am mentioning this point because I don't know whether or not you need a monthly stable cash flow (in case you have house morgatage, car payments and so on ). Plus bear in mind that frequent travel is very much required. means you will work in one project for few months or a year in one project then move to the different state for another project. do you think there will be enough database jobs in the future because of bigdata ? yes, IT jobs will be there forever unless something more powerful than IT replaces IT in future. I mentioned IT jobs because once you know one technology you can update yourself with a new one in a very short time period. Where should you go from here? First decide, which position you want to go for. is it BA , QA or technical field ? If it is technical which one you want to take? programmer (.net ,java) or database developer. please keep in mind that most programmers know database development too. :). I can't recommend you to go to any consultancy ( First of all I don't know any because I am dishwasher and also I don't like that they make fake resume.) but If you decided to go to a consultancy they will boost up your resume (yes they will put some fraud experience in your resume). Just want to mention this so that you know.
if you need any more info let us know. @Nomads77
Pick any programming language - java, .net, ruby on rails, python. just pick anything and see whether or not you like it. if you do love it, then welcome to programming world.
I don't know about others, but in my opinion if one wants to code, then one must have love for it. if you can then try to do some volunteer internship in local companies. that's how you will learn the real world applications.
Also, you can check github.com for open source projects. There are tons of real world applications.
Good luck to both of you.

@taxidriver, I agree with "mero_naam_ho". Age doesn't matter if you have willingness to pursue anything ! I have seen 45 years guy taking training and working on IT field successfully (even though they don't know anything about IT). The only thing it matter is the hard work. Database is the backbone of every company. So, it won't disappear anytime soon. I know few sources which provide best training on database. Provide me your email address, i can send you the detais !

@Mero_naam_ho, Having said that if you have decided to go into the IT field, you can go into one of the following category :

But in my experience in IT, a Business Analyst is never expected to understand, write, or modify software codes. Also, it does not make sense to generate requirements from the code base. The requirements, in fact, comes from the users. As you can see, you have it backwards. But anyone in any IT role with a coding background is definitely an asset.
@Taxi driver, I would not worry about Big Data or what might take over the IT scene now in future. Just focus on what is in demand this year and in the foreseeable future. You cannot control the evolution in IT but you can certainly study the trend and learn to adapt. One needs to have a temperament or learn to cultivate a temperament to succeed in any kind of profession.
@ the losers who hate DV-winners, I was not fortunate enough to win a DV lottery but why on earth would you go out of your way to always make insulting remarks against the DV-winners? They certainly are not here to destroy the way of life in the US.

@GeetMaiJawafDeu I am replying just to share my experience and please bear in mind I am not trying to prove any point. In my previous project, BAs are using sql queries to understand the structure of data, based on those data they will let business people know whats already there and what's the relationship between those data. And then only business people will come with their requirement based on that analysis. It a was a migration project. In one project, one of a colleague of mine who is a BA, asked me to help him analyze a chunk of java code. Why? Business was making something new in different platform and they want to replicate same functionality with other new features. Based on that he was asked to create a requirement. Not saying that every BA will need this. Just sharing my personal experience. That's all.

Thank you all for your suggestions. It gives me motivation to pursue my dreams. I am already settled in the business field but the money is horrible even after 6 years of experience, I am making less than a new QA engineer. Also i want to travel, and with this job i am not finding much opportunity to do that. Geetimaijawafdiu brother, thanks for your perspective on big data and the IT field in overall. You are right there is no need to worry if you keep yourself on updating. I need that kind of mental grounding. Btw, I was the only one in this thread who mentioned about DV. If you go back and read my thread i was not insulting dv winners. I was simply stating the fact that some of my DV winner friends who were new in the country were able to land and maintain the jobs in IT after few months of training. Now i know we as immigrants are all new in the country but they were newer than the ones who went to school for undergrad or masters and had no trouble finding jobs although they were working in different non-IT sectors in Nepal. Out of 4, 2 of them did not even continue their education after +2. When they first arrived , I suggested all of them to use their gc and go to school for few years, get internships or junior positions in the IT but I was obliviously wrong to suggest that because as the time has proven, that would be a serious waste of time and energy to go to school when you don't have to. I am saying that based on the fact that they found jobs after few months of training and are maintaining them. I also don' t find my business when they call themselves engineers when they haven't been to the school of engineering or even taken 1 physics class or calculus class in life after slc. IT is indeed amazing. You can't train 4 months for doc and practice medicine. you can' t practice accounting for 2 months and be a cpa. you can't go to training for 3 months and pull someone's teeth. if you try to do that in medicine, accounting etc you will be discovered by the authorities and put behind the bar. But you can go to desi consultancy for 3 months and become engineer and look like even IT managers know that and it's ok somehow. Anyway, I am not here to judge, but to receive your suggestions. Again , when i mentioned about the dv winners friends of mine i was simply stating the fact and not judging. thanks

I'm getting training on SQL BI from S3 Services Irving, TX (http://s3sonline.com/). I got to know about this consultancy through one of my friend who is taking VMWare training on same place. The instructors here are very young, hardworking and experience. They are very strict in assignment though.
